Slopes aren't necessarily bad. Look at Asheville now. The flat areas are what flooded. Water drains away on slopes. Water accumulates near the bottom of terrain. Look for trees and other vegetation growing at a potential land purchase. That's what keeps soil in place. Bare slopes need closer examination.
We had a flood June 28th 1980 in our neighborhood. We were the lowest spot other than the creek running through the neighborhood. The amount of mud and silt was almost a foot thick in the street and covered everything in the garage and several vehicles in front of our house got water up to the roofs. Insurance didn’t total the cars but did replace engine and transmission in 1 of the trucks. I got that as my first car 6 years later and spent 2 years cleaning Random slit out of ever nook and cranny. I to this day have never forgotten the smell and slick feeling of the silt.
Who the f**k wants to move to that racist azz town. I bet you aren't saying that TODAY! So glad you took your racist azz there in time for God's judgement for Javion Magee. I bet you have some Negatives now😅😅😅 Thank you God for your judgement. HOPE YOU CAN SWIM 🏊♂️ MAGA RACIST 😂😂😂YOU 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
If you live in Ashville North Carolina, or anywhere for that matter and choose to vote for a candidate and party who denies climate change is real and wants to defund FEMA and most government agencies, well then, just expect more and more of this in the future. More often and more severe with no relief.
I was there all month in the Riceville area and we lost power at the same time at 3am Friday. Our bridge was washed away. Saturday a neighbor's home caught fire and even though the fire house was less than a mile away there was nothing the fire dept could do and it burned down to the foundation . That home had a gated driveway and after the fire the locals opened that gate and we were able to maneuver from that driveway to 2-3 other driveways to finally make it to a two lane road and escape. We live in Nashville and had to drive far south then west to Chattanooga then north to get back home. Its a terrible loss...so many of the places we visited during the month are now gone or totalled.
Do you know how many Republicans from up Asheville way that are spreading rumors that they knew nothing about hurricane Helene was going to come up through Western NC. Of course, it's it's a bold aXX lie, but this is what MAGA Republicans say and write. I am sick of their lies and total B.S.‼️
Thanks for covering the real Asheville. I just found your channel and appreciate your telling the truth. I'm in the South Slope area (on a high hill) that the French Broad River mostly destroyed.
I use to live in Elizabethton, TN. I didn't know the Mountains were a place that floods out so bad about every 20 yrs. I see now that Big Hurricanes have hit Western N.C. Mountains in 1916 (Biggest) - 1940 - 1973 -2004, etc.. Moved back 2 eastern N.C. No way as Pretty but too old to go through a Big event like in the Mountains now days.. Don't know if my old house made it through this storm or not as it was built into the side of Holston Mt. Thanks 4 Video. Glad U R safe...
I lived in Asheville area for 15 years. Remember Hurricane Ivan? Yep, Helene is not Asheville 1st hurricane. Ivan hit in 2004 and Biltmore Village was completely underwater. All those high-end shops were ruined. There's no way I'd have a business in that area. The reason that so many people are still without water and power is that they are so remote. The roads are out so they are completely cut off from society. I lived in 3 different areas there. North Asheville, Flat Rock, & Fletcher. My beautiful 100 year old home in Fletcher which was 6 beautiful acres lost every single old oak tree. One landed on the house. The neighbor lost 21 oaks. No thanks. With climate change, most of the south is going to be vulnerable to disaster. May I suggest Canada?
Nicely done. Honest, informative video. Live in nearby county. No cell service for 2 weeks so had no idea how area actually looked. Just now catching up. Thank you.
I lived in Asheville from 1998 to 2009 (when i retired) because my job transferred there. I worked at the Federal Building 151 Patton Ave. I lived in the apartment complex at Turtle Creek (address was on Foxfire Dr). I remember they built a ""fancy"" McDonalds outside the entrance to the Builtmore estates. It was build in the style of Builtmore. I assume it went under water. Most of Turtle Creek was elevated but they built some new apartments that were not "up the hill". Any observations would be appreciated.
Day 19. We are all in it and the feelings are all over. No words for some of the stories and losses. But I'm focusing on community, care, and our future. We are all in this together.
Great job Lena, have been crying watching your video, sob every morning on the way to work through Biltmore village. But I do too believe that we will get up on our feet and come out stronger and more united as a community. WNC strong! 😘
Thank you for adding perspective. I live in South Asheville (off Long Shoals) and our situation was exactly as you described. I hope all the small businesses & artists are able to rebuild and don't have to leave Asheville. Several that I love are a complete loss. Thankfully donations have been pouring in!
I have lots of trouble with Lyft and some uber drivers due to having a large service dog but when I am at my breaking point trying to do things that need to get done all I have to do is remember my friend wh has no electricity inWeaverville. her extra money is gone now because she can't do the craft shows now. I worry about her but can't say it to her. she is grown, older than me but love her like family. she is strong when I haven't been able to be. prayers for all in NC!!
Good to hear most of Asheville is standing Biltmore Village and River Arts are clearly in a lower elevation maybe not a good build place They had this same pattern of flood in 1916 so likely will happen again
@@christinaeager4418 who’s going to do it- that’s the question. A lot of people have all the trees still in their yards and they don’t know how to get them out. Everything costs money
Thank you for the matter of fact honesty. Our dream has been to retire in Asheville. The first couple of days, it was extremely sad to see the destruction. We thought our plans were no longer going to happen. I'm very encouraged and touched that the Asheville community has come together and helped each other. ❤ I can't wait to get our plans in motion soon. Thank you.
Have many of the people in the less affected parts of Ashville been having the now homeless people come and live with them since their houses got washed away? Just curious.
@@bjbobbijo5066 not that I know of. Asheville is not a walkable place so people who live and lived on the streets can’t really move around easily. And people who lost their homes (if that’s what you mean?) - honestly i don’t know where all of them go💔.
