A week after hurricane Helene hit our area we still have no water and don't know when we'll get it back, electricity is back in some places. We were very lucky and had no damage, unlike thousands of people who lost everything.
@@foreverfreealib You have to keep in mind that creators have no control over what kinds of ads show on their channels. Also, smaller channels where there are lots of ads aren't even aware half the time that it's happening bc they aren't yet monetized or don't care to become monetized. The only control a creator has is very limited options whether to have them play at the beginning, middle or end, etc. If you paid $13 a month for premium, the only ads you'll see are the one's where a creator informs their viewers about a product.
@@livinginashevillenc But we are glad you did! Do you know how many of the issues you pointed out many of us experience in our own towns? We have areas that 'always flood'; and we are fighting like crazy to keep them from destroying our wetlands here in my part of Virginia. Having grown up in my hometown, when I came home to buy a house, I knew where NOT to buy one because I know that while there are 'annoying' little floods, if we had Helene come through here, we'd be seeing those same violent flash flooding. But here's a question that I have pondered, do the TVA dams share some of the responsibility? While the dams didn't fail, the way they were breached/over topped, probably created a lot of the violent flash flooding we saw along the river. I know I was holding my breath and praying when I heard dams were in trouble; and much relieved they held.
@@tenerifecats6652 the amount of water and pressure we got in a very short amount of time was catastrophic and those dams wouldn’t have been able to hold- from what I hear. I heard somewhere they compared Niagara falls amount of water with what we got in our little rivers. Of course it blew everything up
The PVC factory in Woodfin has had a massive chemical spill into the French Broad. The mud is to be considered highly toxic and caustic and has polluted the already leveled town of Marshall! The media is not covering the full extent of the damage and lives lost. Almost 100 lost souls have been recovered in Swananoa alone.😥
This was excellent reporting, thank you for doing this. The drone images are haunting. Wishing the people of Asheville strength and a speedy recovery from this terrible disaster.
Hi. Thank you for this video. I live 1.5 hours from Asheville near Morganton, NC. We had some storm damage here but absolutely nothing like the damage done to Asheville. My sister-in-law lives off of highway N-63 in north west Asheville. She is ok and we are so grateful that she did not lose her life like so many others that we have heard about. Stay strong and most importantly stay safe. I am praying for you all.
Elena you made a powerful documentary with thoughtful insight about the potential impact. And your before and after coverage is so thorough, especially the drone coverage. Thank you for sharing this video. My heart goes out to those that have lost loved ones, have washed away homes and towns, and ruined homes. I’m also praying for you that have no power, water, or communication from internet. May each of you feel the love and comfort of our Saviour, Yahusha, and have all your needs met. He loves you so. 🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻
Im in Bryson City, my son lives in Asheville and it's unbelievable how people are still without the essentials. That just shows you how intense the damage is from Helena. Amazing job on the video, thank you for sharing this and informing those who have planned their Fall vacation here. The devastation is surreal.
Our hearts go out to Asheville along with Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. We all need to stick together at this rough moment and get eachother through this sad time. I live in Shelby and if anyone needs anything I’m here. Stay Strong!!!!!
Thank you for sharing this. You did a great job documenting the extent of this disaster and how it escalated beyond "typical flooding" into a completely teagic natural disaster. And you are correct, the outside world is only now beginning to realize how devastated the Western North Carolina communities are. We appreciate your shared timeline and documentary, are grateful for your safety and will continue praying for you and all of Western North Carolina
Thank you for this- I am so sorry for all the loss and devastation. Asheville has an incredible spirit and will come back stronger then ever. Glad you are safe.
Although it is small consolation now, someday you, your family and community will be grateful that you documented this disaster as it unfolded. This video was well-produced and informative on many levels. It will doubtless give many individuals and cities ideas for mitigating-to the extent any of us can-future such tragedies.
We live in Austin, TX, but have land in Leicester, NC that we plan to build on when we retire. I am heartbroken by the loss of lives and life in this area we fell in love with. Your videos are always very helpful and I hope you and your community are able to support each other through this very hard time.
Excellent video. Subscribed. I live in Texas and have mainly heat and drought problems. BUT as cities keep converting farm land into housing developments - we have flooding too! People DO need to do their homework before moving to lush, green areas! Those beautiful green landscapes can come with a price. Thanks for your excellent delivery of important information for people wanting to move. Move really anywhere they were not raised in! People get use to a life of “needing to get in their cars and shop and eat and THEN Mother Nature shows herself. When I see my car 1/2 full of gas - I’ve trained my mind to see EMPTY: fill up! Thanks again for your coverage of damage in the area and the sincere concern for others!❤
Elena, thank you for your insights and courage. Living in Hawaii I am well acquainted with tropical storms, but you are enduring an unusually dire hardship with days without basic necessities. My thoughts are with you and your family and neighbors.
Glad you are safe. We live in Bryson City, which really got spared the devastation of towns west of us. Thanks for the coverage. It’s heartbreaking the damage this caused to this wonderful area.
Your before and after is impactful and better than most media coverage. When you mentioned your gas stove it hit home. Through the years we've be without power for multiple days (nothing like what you're experiencing), and the gas stove is a God send. All the best to you and your family.
Hi, I was transfixed by your video. I live in Black Mountain, and had just finished moving my brother out of his house off Riceville rd. Thursday night. Thankfully we were all safe at my Mothers house on Friday in Blk. Mtn. We were so lucky!! Just power and water out. I say "just" but things like this really put things in a different perspective, don't they? We found we were even luckier that a close neighbor had an above ground pool we could dip buckets to flush toilets. We stuck it out thru Monday and it was very heartwarming to see the way neighbors were helping each other thru the emotional and physical challenges that arose. We had just the night before finished moving from the Buffalo Mountain neighborhood off of Riceville Road to a neighborhood off of N. Blue Ridge in Black Mountain. The house we moved to did not have any notable damage and with all of the destruction just down the hill from where we were at we have so much to be thankful for. We are in Atlanta now with family and transfixed by the video and images we have been seeing. it's heartbreaking. Quick question.... at 21:45 in the video you pass by the white Riceville Church...when we were moving our other vehicle got a flat tire and we had to park it at that church, planning to have it towed the next day and exhausted from moving we had not been paying any attention to the weather reports. Is there any chance you could look at the unedited video and see if you can see our gold Honda Pilot parked in front of that church and if it has any tree damage. I hate to think of how many trees fell in our old neighborhood. We won't be back up to be able to check on it for an uncertain amount of time. A lot of things are uncertain right now but I am certain that those mountains are where I want to live. Your videos are always very informative and full of practical advice that shows how much you care. Thank you for that!
This lady tells the truth. You wouldn’t think a large city like Asheville could have so much damage, but with 3 rivers and so many low areas, it’s kinda scary. That’s not counting all the big trees that come down because of so much rain and flooding, and the wind. She said it’s a 100 year event. We had one of those 100 years storms years ago in Iowa. It did so much damage to a lot of towns in Iowa, plus in our town. Lots of rain and flooding. Prayers sent up for Asheville and lots of areas, plus the loss of so many people and some still not found. It’s just a sad thing to happen.
We are watching from 🇬🇧, condolences on your losses, out of tragedy comes the real reason we here, each other and togetherness, god bless you all and to those patriots who are standing tall, thank you.
Wow! Great video! I stayed in Thursday and Friday. Thanks for showing me what was happening. Luckily everything where I am is fine. Just got internet back today am finally seeing the images of what took place. I’m glad you are safe! Thanks again for your videos!
Out of all the videos I've seen related to the flooding in Asheville, you are the only one who have acknowledged that it is a flood zone and you're the only one who mentioned the flood in 2004. Yes, this storm/flooding is historic, but it seems like everyone else doesn't have the knowledge you do.
Sounds like you are trying to blame the residents for the flood, because they “should have known it was a floodplain”. Most of the USA population lives in a flood plain, especially if they have 30 plus inches of rain dumped on them in 24 hours. These people didn’t deserve to experience this level of destruction and death.
Elena, thanks for sharing this video. Claire and I also discounted the warnings - and like you we were totally surprised by the extent of the damage. Our house is on a high spot 65' above Haw Creek. It was not damaged, but no power, no water, no internet, no useful cell signal. We're staying in Charlotte right now. Will come back to Asheville when early voting starts, then will leave again and stay in Greenville which is closer to hom.
Thank you for sharing this. It’s good to see this from an honest, no nonsense perspective. We have been watching your videos for a couple years and appreciate your truthfulness about all aspects of real estate. We live on the Gulf Coast of Florida and are afraid of the next hurricane that is coming. We had planned to move to western NC in the next year, so seeing this devastation is kind of personal to us. I don’t see how the whole area will recover for a long time. Blessings to you and your family. We hope that you get power back soon. Now we have to go prepare for a storm that will be called Milton once it forms, and the path is straight at us here in the Fort Myers area. Can’t believe it- another one. Best wishes always. ❤️👍🙏
Having lived in tornado alley, it is very strange to see, up close, the difference in the damage patterns. A tornado would have damaged, or destroyed, the building first. And then, damaged the contents inside. From the pictures of the interior of the buildings, it looks as though a tornado went through the inside of the building first. Then, the damage happened to the buildings exterior structure. It's a very disorienting, science fiction-ish type experience. Thank you for showing such clear details. It is quite a learing experience for flatlanders. Stay safe and God Bless.
🙏 we just experienced Hurricane 🌀 Beryl here in Cleveland, TX your footage is impeccable so brave glory be to the Most High you are all still here even through all the devastation the backdrop of the standing tall mountains speaks beauty🙏
This video gave me so much anxiety... like watching a horror movie. I wanted to shout "Get out, now!" It's so hard when you know what's about to happen and how bad it's going to be.
Hello, after the flood we spent three months cleaning up and repairing everything, at first it was a bit hard mentally, but as soon as we started everything became normal, I wish you health and money
Thank you so much for this very professional video. I'm originally from Waynesville, so Asheville was close enough to do all of our shopping. I had a cabin near Lake Logan, but I doubt it's still there. I'm living in the Shenandoah Mountains now after years in Boston. It's hard to see all of the damage there, but I fear it's just the beginning These super storms were predicted many years ago.
@@eartha911 idk about lake Logan but I was actually just there in Waynesville to do a final walk through and it looked pretty good. Canton downtown was blocked off bc they are still cleaning it up but doesn’t look like anything close to other area. So that’s good
I am very sorry for all the devastation and tragedy that occurred in your beautiful state. Extremely sad. For those of us living in other states, it would be helpful to know who are the best organizations to donate so people there get help. Sending a big hug, love and prayers from PA. 🙏❤️
My daughter lives in Weaverville just north of Asheville. I could not reach her from Friday to Monday of the storm. Thankfully, a neighbor texted me to let me know she was ok. Her neighbor had a gas stove so they could cook. She has all utilities and cell service back as of this last Thursday I believe it was. Her home is fine. Both her Father & sister's homes in Burnsville were not as lucky. She is helping her father tear out sheetrock because they are #70 on the list for the restoration company and the sheetrock was starting to mold already. Her brother-in-law is working on their house, it had 2 trees on it but not sure if it penetrated the roof. I just can't imagine how devastating it is in Asheville. I was just there the end of August visiting my daughter. The damage and loss of life in Buncombe county alone is immeasurable and devastating. God Bless you all and keep you safe. Prayers for God's strength and grace to carry everone through this horrific time.
Great footage. You made some excellent points not just about pre-storm prepping, but also about local infrastructure. You showed ppl how much damage a somewhat small river can cause. Especially, when it involves local businesses. Praying for all those affect by this deadly storm.
Thank you for your video. I live in Southeastern Virginia and am a Biltmore season pass holder and I love visiting the Asheville area. It is amazing that you decided to do this video not knowing how bad it was going to be. I’m sending prayers to you and all those affected by Hurricane Helene.
Oh dear goodness.... God Bless America... God Bless Asheville... My heart is broken. 10.4.24- Hurricane Helen 9.27.24 Natives and newcomers will never give up on Asheville. This was a one time freak occurance. Rebuild! Keep Walking! Never give up.😘😎
Super glad you are safe. Heartbreaking to see what you all have and are going through. I have friends that live there and are too safe unlike many others
Thank you for posting a video of the before during and after. I appreciate what you have shown to give a better idea of exactly what the area is like. HOpe you all are safe now.
Thank you for sharing this, glad you are all safe. It is sad to see but gives us a little more insight to what can and does happen, our Hearts go out to those affected.
Praying for the Lord to provide, protect, and strengthen you, your family, and the communites. Many in the nation are rallying to the areas that have been affected. So many precious people in so many states. Praying!🙏🏻💕
Holy cow . I'm praying you and your neighbors make it through ok .I'm hearing the whole area is wiped out and many have died .I just can't imagine a storm of this magnitude .could devistate such a large area .be safe .please and your family .
I remember watching cars floating down the French Broad River in 2004. I guess a lot of people are new here and didn't realize how bad it can flood. You're not protected from hurricanes in the mountains, by any means. Or tornadoes, earthquakes.
Glad to hear from you. So sad when I saw what happened. Husband was biking in area literally day before on a little vacation from Colorado. We someday may move to area so devastating for everyone😢
Thank you for sharing this!!! Its really sad to see this and my HEART goes out to yall over in AMERICA in those areas affected by this!!! PRAYERS and LOVE to yall and those helping out there!!! GOD will sort this very soon!!! LOVE and RESPECT from SCOTLAND!!! ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤
Sending prayers to all of you. Just hang in there it will get better. I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and when hurricane Katrina hit us it looked like a big bomb has went off. The people here had nothing to eat are water to drink for days. People are sending supplies if it can get to you all. I have been trying to keep up with everything. God Bless you all.
I’m in U.K. sending much love. I’ve seen some horrifying news, reports of men and women and children that have got killed and there is no support of any kind going out to help rescue them. This is shocking the way they have treated you all. Also it’s coming to light that this is a main man-made storm and governments are after the land. Any farmers should not sell their land. That is what they’re after the Land disgusting the way they have treated 😢❤
Sorry, but this is nothing. Go over to Spruce Pine. Some houses and businesses are flooded here in Asheville, and that sucks, but drive an hour Northeast. Houses and businesses aren't just flooded there, They are literally gone. Gone. Empty lots. You would never even know there were neighborhoods. It's October 5th and most of Asheville has power and cell service back by now. Yancey and Mitchell counties will be without power for weeks, if not months we are being told. They have to completely redo the power grid over there. There were tornadoes, not just flooding. What the tornadoes didn't take down, the North toe River finished everything else off. I live in Spruce pine. My neighbor's house is just a memory. There are literally three bricks laying on an empty lot where a house used to be. Bridges gone. Our Ingles is unsalvageable. Buncombe county looks flooded. Mitchell county looks post-apocalyptic. Of course I feel for anyone who has been hugely affected by this tragedy, no matter what county they live in, but I'm sick of hearing people bitching about not having power or water in their homes. At least they still have homes. I know there's a lot of people out there who are majorly inconvenienced by this, your lives have been disrupted, and I get that, but when you're complaining about how much longer your power and your water will be off, just remember - for some people this is catastrophic devastation from which they will never recover. I watched my neighbor and the five other members of his household walk down the street with everything they own now in a Walmart bag.
You have to understand not everyone is gonna lose things equally and people are gonna be upset no matter what they lost or didn’t lose so that same thing applies to you I feel for you and your community but I don’t live there and don’t have people there I would prefer to focus on the town I live in while not hit as hard it still lost a lot so lose the attitude and maybe have some compassion for others the way you want them to for you and your people not trying to be an ass but you act like everyone should drop everything and rush to you no lol we have our own community to rebuild and repair aid is coming but every small town and county was effected not just you
I am very sorry about all the devastation and tragedy that occurred in your beautiful state. Every year during hurricane season the news are focused on Florida since they are hit every year but not North Carolina. Did the local officials have any idea as to how bad it was going to be? Where there any recommendations of evacuation in some areas or was it totally unexpected?
Please remember that not having power or WATER also kills people. We understand your frustration but please keep that in mind. It sounds like your house survived it and your neighbor’s did not? I can’t imagine what you have been through. Millions are trying to help in various ways. I know it will be a long journey back for so many and I pray we find a way to come together to make a difference for others. Keep sharing. It helps people understand how serious this is.
@@dorism4697they knew it was going to be a tropical storm and that they had already had too much rain. You would think they would know it was a potential near these rivers, lakes and creeks.
Thank you for your video. The devastation is so sad and hard to comprehend. So much loss. My son is an UNCA student and was able to get out of his apartment Thursday before the storm. Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. ❤
She would have accepted the assistance and had everything ready before the storm hit! FEMA sent Fairfax Virginia Task Force 1 search and rescue to stage in Florida mainly because DeSantis understood and requested the assistance. I think that authorities in the other states really underestimated the potential of this storm. But you would probably make a great public leader because you could see the potential and probably would have acted sooner to prevent loss of life!
I hate such a beautiful community is going through this. I just pray it will not be taken from the people like ive been hearing. Much love to everyone there
So wonderfully and beautifully said, YOURE a blessing, caring, helping and loving our neighbors at a time like this is most important, I pray for more kind people in our world to care for others and to love our neighbors as ourselves. You pointed that out and it’s heartwarming to hear these kind words. I’m so so sorry for what you all have to go through at this time, I wish and I pray that I can help, I went through a 5 category hurricane and it was a devastating horrible and a most terrifying experience we made it out alive by Gods grace and mercy, my heart goes out to All that has had to go through a hurricane, I stress out now even over a thunderstorm, but GOD is good I know that He will be with you all
Excellent visuals from before the storm and the after. My parents lived in Asheville until 2004 so I visited there many times. They lived off Beaverdam Road, which was off Merrimon Avenue there at an Ingles grocery store. I can't help but wonder how the home they built up there fared during that terrible storm and if they'd have even been able to get back down the mountain to town. I am so glad that you are okay and that your home and vehicle is too. That's a lot to be thankful for after an event as devastating as Helene. Take care and be safe. I have subscribed to see what you will show us as recovery begins and life begins to grow and flourish once more. 😊 ❤ 🙏
Thank you so much for your honesty and fortitude. You are a blessing to that area. I'm on the west coast and never knew anything about Asheville, and don't like the way main stream media covers such incidents. You were true, honest, informative, gracious, and kind. Thank you. God bless you and your community with strength, wisdom, and continued fortitude to navigate this new life you've been thrust into.
Well bless you for this extremely informative video! You have a lot to offer others in knowledge! Big hugs and many blessings! Love your drone footage!
Thank you for documenting this historic storm. I feel like deep down, you had a feeling that compelled you to film this. ❤ sending love and prayers from AZ
