I think re-coring it with balsa and epoxy then a few layers of bi-axe would have been a bit easier and saved on material cost. Either way it came out pretty good and I'm sure you learned something the next time you have to fiberglass. Keep the dream alive brother!
Thank you! One step at a time, we’ll see how she holds up with this type of repair in the coming years. Just didn’t want the bow to ever rot again given how wet it is up there.
You should have replaced the rotten balsa core with a new one glued with thickened epoxy and then laminate biaxial on top of it. Way easier and cheaper epoxy wise
Hello, 😊 To make a positif outlook from what I know, it is without doubt a mess ! Epoxy … it is messy but it is not a excuses for it ! There is many air bubbles even the size is a silver count. From how important the area is, my advises for you is to let a professional look over your video and he will let you know what it is. Look at this in a positif way! Looking forward to see more from your videos.
Giveaway! 🦑🐋 Hello Everyone, thank you for sticking with it this episode, all aspects (doing, filming, editing) were quite the endeavor but I’m glad it all turned out. For the month of September 2024, I am giving out hand pressed artist prints as well as the usual t-shirt to all Sailor tier patrons on the Patreon so check out the link in the description :) Thank you so much for liking and subscribing and I’ll see you on the next episode! - Kevin ⛵️
I know you’ve already cut the top fiberglass but if it would’ve been me since the core did not go all the way to the hull I would have considered removing the core from inside the boat.
That definitely would have been the better option for many reasons! I wanted to use gravity to settle things out and lay down the heavy sheets of glass without pressing from beneath 😅 seemed easier in my head
doing from the top is fine BUT the point of reusing the top skin is to take it off in one piece not a puzzle set of ten odd shaped pieces, no bevel on core, recore with balsa or foam type core material, a sheet of 1708 and then the skin back on top
And now the sailboat that has been painted black is living semi-permanently on a Hope Island state park mooring buoy, once again abandoned. Is this your buddies and can he move it?
So if I stole your car, drove it to my house, painted it black, took the engine out, and the neighbor told you to drive it back to your house you would do it without seeking justice. Oh, and the only tow truck driver in town also lives with me and charges $6k per half mile tow (which he does with this pirate). Gotchya
§1652. Citizens as pirates Whoever, being a citizen of the United States, commits any murder or robbery, or any act of hostility against the United States, or against any citizen thereof, on the high seas, under color of any commission from any foreign prince, or state, or on pretense of authority from any person, is a pirate, and shall be imprisoned for life.
I wonder how often this law comes into use, maybe it’s meant more for commercial vessels being robbed, because not much is happening fast with these boats.
The crimes have to be committed on the water though. stripping and stealing the boat could be Piracy. federal offense checks into it. we can't let stuff like this happen.
Been working on my boat for a couple years preparing it for the San Juan Islands I'm based in Cathlamet Washington plan it on sailing to the r2ak next year and was going to leave my boat for a small portion of time but your video has made me reconsider my channel is called Santana 28 restoration and sailing I hope everything gets back in order for your boats and I think if you would have spread the resin on on that vertical surface then installed the fabric then wiped it wet
Ya, the Puget Sound can be safe but it has been particularly bad in recent years. Just about every major bay has a predator looking for vacant boats now. Agreed on the vertical fiberglassing 😅 live and learn. I will check out your channel!
Most boats made around the 60's-70's are going the same refits. Just look at Sailing Uma's channel, among many others. A lot of boats with the same problems 50 years on.
No reason not to buy an IP. Just look at Mack Yacht Services, about 18k to do the job right. This video, cutting that longitudinal stringer to access the plate...just compromised his deck's integrity, and created a new problem to deal with down the line. You need to know what you're doing before dicing up structural elements.
I've seriously held off commenting on the guitar for a couple episodes ... please relent, there are plenty of copyright free tunes out there. Glad to see the progress in the engine compartment, but you say that you are going to use stainless for the new mount. Just how are you going to attach the stainless mount to the hull? Even stainless will have issues if you embed it within the hull. Have you considered using something like Koosa board to build a strong mounting shelf to span the hull sides? Then you can mount the motor directly to the Koosa board -- this will keep the cost down as stainless is much more expensive than Koosa board. You may also want to consider using and Aqua Drive (it is a constant velocity joint system to keep the motor more isolated from the thrust of the prop and shaft), as I'm sure that the bearings within the electric motor will last way longer if you isolate them from the lateral thrust that the shaft is likely to exert.
Unfortunately the guitar will continue through august at least 😂 my boat neighbor is a great musician and he played some songs onboard so at least it won’t be my guitar. I had no idea where to start for the new motor mounts, until now! I will look into koosa board shelf, that would make life a lot easier for sure.
Doesn’t matter how long the refit takes, it’s all part of the experience. I’m coming up on end of my first year on the 38’. Everyday it’s something new. Enjoy
We’ll see what the motor needs as we are cruising to Alaska and back and adjust the regen solutions as needed. Most of the circumnavigation will be near the tropics with plenty of sun, my friend just made it to Fiji with this build (same brand, smaller motor) but less regen than I’m planning, he is doing just fine :)
Pull that motor out rebuild it. It’s a simple motor. If you’re wanting to replace everything with the newest and greatest why did you buy that. It will never be latest and greatest. Yes you will know you replaced stuff. That will be your knowledge. Or fixing and rebuilding that’s your choice
So you don’t have a wife to be now? I prefer my wife to any thing. She may not to me at times. But she sees the good in me. Sorry your wife to be is no longer.
You paisley a lot for a few fenders. Seems you need to replace the 2 ways that boat moves. Motor and rigging. You’re young and need to learn life’s lessons. But what one can’t barrow or save is one’s time. Wish the best also. Not being a don’t do just stating facts. One video you said you had a wife to be and same video you stated to sail around the world solo. Hope you figure what is really important in ones life.
My wife is not interested in boat stuff, and she is in medical school, I was planning to come back from sailing when she finishes but now we have kids so the solo trip probably won’t be completely solo 😅
I would have probably done that now that I’m confident with fiberglass, but at the time I was not 😅 it comes back to bite me last winter when a ton of water froze solid down there.
Step by step you’re getting there 🙏. Fww Living For Sale had the same issues on his foredeck and documented it’s rebuild really well, ya know, with all the free time you have to watch RU-vid 😉. Also did some really cool things to the anchor locker and drainage
I will check them out as I prepare! Especially interested in how they did the anchor locker, I’m still somewhat clueless how I’m going to approach that.
Thank you! Still very passionate about this project. I think the key is to forget the grand goals and focus on making progress, disappointment comes from failed expectations which becomes disheartening. I am just happy make each step happen. Small, accomplishable goals are great for making each small step happen without being disappointed. Just chugging along now, enjoying the journey ⛵
