I write technical books, mostly on modifying cars. This channel covers some of the topics from my books - aerodynamics, electronics, on-road testing and car suspension. My books are available from Amazon.

Hey Julian! I am going to be buying your book soon but want to give a thank you for sharing your wisdom! Ive been focusing strictly on refining the suspension on my car. I took your advice and eliminated the rear roll since my car plowed alot. Completely changed the characteristics, so much more rotation. Cant wait to get the book and dig into it!

Yes, people just don't realise the power of altering front/rear weight transfer characteristics.

Great video! Im definitely going to need to buy the book! Ive been having some understeer when trying to accelerate out of certain turns and Im not even going high speeds(40ish) through a long curve turn. Im slightly cambered and have adjustable coilovers and after this video I believe I may have stiffened the front dampers too much. I also have to check on the tire tread.

The chassis on my r31 skyline was so flimsy I cracked the windscreen jacking the car up from the front driver's side. Talk about flex.

Yes, car stiffness has changed radically in 40 years.

Appeal to Authority is a logical fallacy and unscientific. You'd think people with "qualifications" would know that. Universities have truly failed to live up to their historical levels of prestige.

I bet this book will become one of the staples in car modifications for handling and will be used for decades. Wonderful work!

But why fo you need all that stuff. Surely by cutting into the live to the solenoid and installing a switch you just cut any power and prevent ignition. Not fancy but it must work .😇
@JulianEdgar
@JulianEdgar 23 часа назад
Usually pretty easy to find the switch. How do you find a switch that is not even visible?

I full agree that lot of grip don't mean good handling, BUT (xD) I realize that good set of fresh tires makes a car controllable, predictable and progressive. I started my racing in grassroots events, where lot of people (included me) ride on really shitty, used tires, not bald, simply overaged. Car on this type tires was unpredictable on limit, and it no way to feel how much grip I have. When I put a set of fresh tires I'm shocked. Now tires communicate how much I can push, and even I push to hard, grip loss is not sudden. I learned this especially on motorcycle. Old tires, even when looks good are unpredictable on hard braking or in wet conditions, other hand fresh ones feels way more "rubbery" on handlebar. Now I may ride motorcycle on some level of slip and stil control the bike.

Usually quite the opposite. Too much grip often ends in very fast breakaway, which means it's very difficult to find and balance on any limits. Something you can find good balance and confidence in, to exploit it at it's limits, is good handling.

Just dropping a line to say I really enjoyed this, and feel there’s a real lack of top-level, structured content in the car world. I for one want more lectures. Thank you! 😃

You hit the nail on the head on the progressive for me. My 02 wrx handles great and has insane grip on dry but the rest end likes to step out on wet. I’ve got swaybars in the front and rear, would the rear be too tight/stiff? Thank you
@JulianEdgar
@JulianEdgar День назад
Yes, probably. But what happens when it loses grip in the dry?
@Nate88isboss

@@JulianEdgar it rarely does and I can feel when it’s about too, it’s almost always cuz I gave it too much throttle rear end will start to step out but I just let off a hair and it straightens/digs out of the corner. And thank you for taking the time to reply🙏🏼

very good comment that maximum grip doesnt mean the car feels good to handle, even true in the context of motorsport. For my part I would like to say I'm pretty shocked at how overbearing the power steering feels on some modern cars. I feel nearly no difference in self-aligning torque between gripping on pavement and understeering in the slush in my current car.

In most countries they are known simply as sway bars. In my book I primarily use the term anti-roll bars.

they weren't trained engineers either. yet they were the most scientific and invented how we use wind tunnels today and created the field of aeronautical engineering. And their work was so amazing it took over 5yrs for anyone to catch up to them. They created the modern propeller (98% efficient too), created a cutting edge lightweight gasoline engine, invented the Angle of Attack indicator, 3-axis flight controls, etc.

It covers characteristics of different bump stops, and the importance of considering the bump stop as part of the springing system. But I am not sure what 'bump stop tuning' is.

I’ll wait for reviews. My problem with buying these types of books online is that usually just cover general information with maybe some real-world stories, but nothing in-depth and proper technical info.
