As of right now I am a German volunteer firefighter doing a year of service in my local professional dep. I want to be a professional in the states however.
Many years ago, in training, we dug down to bare mineral soil, and deployed the fire shelters. Brush was piled around us and they lit it on fire. There were charged lines in case anyone panicked. It was hot and smoky inside the shelter. There are small pinprick holes in the fire shelters and the "camera obscura" effect made it look like small flames were dancing on your fire gear. Really gave us confidence in the "Shake and Bake" fire shelters. I understand they don't do this anymore, which is too bad as it was a great confidence builder.
Im 15 years old and hope to be hired at my local fire department someday but I have asthma. Are three any firefighters here who could tell me if I can still get hired?
This series got me to sign up with my local Vol. department. Been running hoses and directing traffic on calls for a few weeks with them and am starting school this week! I’ve never been so anxious and excited my life
20 years old and im working hard to try to become a firefighter with a big city but also gonna go to school for firefighter and emt so i can get in with smaller towns too and help others🙏
Is it possible for foreigners who register at the US fire department academy and become US firefighters by changing the status of residents to US residents after being sworn in?
I am working as a dispatcher in saudi arabia and trained as a fire fighter in nepal. I want to do NFPA fire fighter kevel 1& 2. Could you please guide me to the academy?
Unfortunately most fire departments don’t sustain the rigor. I volunteered at my local fire department and most were overweight. Fire Chief must have been 300lbs +. There really should be an expectation to maintain fitness level because if you aren’t in shape you quickly become a liability.
Same with police. I understand police and fire unions, but those Unions kinda make it impossible for a city/county to enforce fitness standards and if people don't meet them FIRING them. A lot needs to change. Seeing fat cops, firefighters or paramedics/EMTs give me zero confidence.
i think about being a fire fighter and if i was going to be one i would attend the academy in like 2 years, and ngl im pretty weak and skinny. how should i prepare for that in the time i have?
The biggest thing to overcome is the mindset that you can't do something. Start working on your fitness and strength building now, create that lifestyle. You don't have to be a bodybuilder in this line of work, but you do need to be able to sustain a workload over a period of time. Some strength is essential and required. You'll get there!
@UnifiedFireUtah Thank you so much for the tips! I definitely need to start working on strength for my health anyway, and it's great to know you don't have to be insanely strong in that line of work. Thank you!
Cool video! I’m about wrapped up with an 8ish month academy that included EMT. I’ve got military time and been thru a police academy so I didn’t think much of it in terms of difficulty. But it’s actually been pretty grindy at times. The academics are pretty involved. And you can make bunker gear suck in many ways😂
I would love to do this, but I’m too out of shape at the moment. I’m trying to get back into diet and exercise. It would be awesome to go this this and finish someday
This may be a dumb question but I start this month on the 25th fire training school. My question is at the end of training do they cut recruits? Or how can a recruit not make it? Im a little nervous about the (school side of my firefighter training).
We can't speak for every camp, only ours. We don't look to "cut" recruits, instead we demonstrate what it takes to be a fully fit and ready firefighter. It's not easy and some choose to leave on their own. We will let someone go at any time if there are issues of non-compliance or other signs of the relationship not working out. Good luck!
No way some of these cadets passed the CPAT. Must not have required… they should require it. Basic level of fitness to pass it, would have cut 1/3 of those recruits that shouldn’t have been there.
I want to be a firefighter, but have asthma. It isn’t bad, haven’t used an inhaler in a while only when I get really sick is when my asthma acts up but other than that I’m good. I spent 4 years as a army combat engineer and currently working as an emt, will asthma be a disqualifier?
There isn't a blanket statement of what will keep you in or out. We follow the NFPA 1582 firefighter standard, check that out for more info. We provide every recruit a health screening as part of their onboarding with a yearly checkup.
You should. A lot of servicemen and women make that transition, plus with us you can receive preference points on the written exam that puts you ahead of others.
