I am also descended from an old Orkney (Jarl) Earl called Harald Mac Mudah who changed his name to Harald Maddadsson as he had Norse connections.He was born in 1134 & he died in 1206, & he was Jarl of Orkney from 1138 until his death in 1206.Further information can be found in a book published in 1906 called The Moodie Book, & my full name is Joseph Thompson Moodie, as the Moodie surname is derived from the Mac Mudah surname. My ancesters were from Shetland & most likely Orkney beforehand & my dna is of Norse Viking descent, & also the Moodie surname is a Sept of Clan Stewart or Stuart. Harald Maddadsson ruled Orkney along with Rognvald Kali Kolsson who is also mentioned in the comments below. I have visited both Orkney & Shetland & I am very proud of my ancestry & heritage, & it's wonderful to be descended from an ancient Orkney Jarl who is fondly remebered & part of the history of Orkney. There was a news article The Orkney Newspaper about Harald Maddadsson in June 2024 which was very interesting as he was such a memorable character.

The most amazing thing is that no body saw it happen. They obviously heard the terrible noise, but by the time they realized what had, or was happening, it was all over. Conflicting numbers exist as to exactly how much rock fell. Some say up to 110 Million tons, and others are a bit lower at 90-95 million tons. The size of the slab of limestone that fell, was huge in itself. It was approximately 3,000 feet long, 2,100 feet high, and 500 feet thick. That’s an awesomely huge slab of limestone. Yet, the it took just 90 seconds to happen, start to finish. Just imagine the unbelievable noise.! Those rocks came down that mountain at about 75-80 miles an hour. They stopped on the other side of the valley. Just the trip there, is worth it all!
If Mathews and Rodney had descended when their team leader told them to (instead of insisting on staying up the mountain) then perhaps Mike would have had the extra rest at base camp that he so clearly needed. My best friend lived in Iowa for awhile, in the heart of tornado alley. Her house, in spite of being an old farmhouse style had a well constructed basement. Her rule was- if even a mild thunderstorm shows up we all go into the basement until it passes. There was too much of a chance of a tornado forming. Nature can be a scary creature!

I was a machinist fresh out of the RCN-ERA program working at Canadian Arsenals Ltd in Longbranch, Ontario, where just the production lines I was responsible to do tooling set-ups made thousands of barrels for the M-14, more thousands of globe ends for arrestor cables for the U.S. carriers at "Yankee" and "Dixie" stations. Repairs of even more thousands of the recoil cylinder mechanism for 105 howitzers which involved everything from simple bore re-honing to re-lining, chrome plating etc.. One of my lines got an order for 20K 18", black anodized bayonets for the National Guard after the Kent State fiasco as the reasoning was - they were very intimidating when protestors were faced with a line of soldiers with those ugly fixed bayonets pointing at them. I don't believe they were ever issued out of stocks but they were sure as heck shipped down there. Those were just the items I personally had hands on with but there was a crap-ton of stuff being made in that facility for the U.S. during that war.
