THE STORY THAT DEFINED A GENERATION REIMAGINED AS A GROUNDBREAKING MUSICAL
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1967, the hardened hearts and aching souls of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade and their chosen family of ‘outsiders’ are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. A story of the bonds that brothers share and the hopes we all hold on to, this gripping new musical reinvigorates the timeless tale of ‘haves and have nots’, of protecting what’s yours and fighting for what could be. Adapted from S.E. Hinton’s seminal book and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film, THE OUTSIDERS features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Justin Levine, music supervision, arrangements & orchestrations by Justin Levine, choreography by Rick Kuperman & Jeff Kuperman and directed by Danya Taymor.
[DARREL] Soda, I'm really a mess Every night I worry myself to sleep While you're watching cartoons There ain't nothing I can do for you I know that Ponyboy's really got a damn good heart Something 'bout him that really could take him far But I keep holding him down I've run this family right into the ground Maybe you'd be best without me I don't know what else to say I lost our brother and I lost my way I think a fool could'a done better Maybe I've been afraid to say That I'm just not cut out for this Just another failure on a growing list And it's harder now than ever It's more than I can take There ain't no one to bail me out There ain't no saving this now I think I'm throwing in the towel [SODAPOP] On the days when you feel like you're torn in two Making dinner, paying bills that are overdue Think that I don't see? It'd go to hell if it was left up to me And I don't know what we would do if you were not around The one to keep the ship afloat when its going down Darrel, I need you And anyone can see that Pony does too I know you love him That's all you gotta do And I don't know what else to say I know you feel like you've lost your way But I think you're doing better Better than you know [DARREL] If he comes back, there’s a price to pay What if they lock our brother away? [SODAPOP] There ain’t no way of knowin’ We've gotta get our brother home [DARREL, SODAPOP, & PONYBOY] This is the darkest hour of the darkest night Looking up ahead, you can't see no light But the time is now or never There ain't no letting go [SODAPOP] You might feel like you’re givin’ out We need you more than ever now Don't go throwing in the towel I know your head is full of doubt But brother, that's what love is all about Don't go throwing in the towel [DARREL, SODAPOP, & PONYBOY] When you love someone that's all that you can do There ain't no throwing in the towel
Susan Eloise Hinton wrote the Outsiders when she was 16. I used to think it was loved by so many kids cuz she truly knew what teen angst was really like since she was a teen when it was written. She even played a small role in the movie as the nurse Dally mouths off to in his hospital room. I can’t help but wonder how much of a kick she got out of this musical knowing a new generation was going to fall in love with her book in a whole new iteration no one expected. This song really sounds authentic to the character. When he told Ponyboy to stay gold, if Johnny’s spirit could have sung it, I bet he meant every word of this song. I thought Robert Frost’s poem perfectly encapsulated that sunrise scene, but now listening to this song, I know it’s finally come full circle.
This song pulls at my heart strings everytime I hear Brody sing it and when the rest of the guys join I am a blubbering mess. That’s how theatre and the passion in actors voices always will make me emotional as long as I live! ❤️❤️❤️
It's my first time listening to this song, and I started crying even though I can't hear the lyrics (still working on my English listening...), don't know anything about the musical, the book or the plot. Just the music alone, and the emotions conveyed through the beautiful voices, were enough to bring down tears. I was touched at heart.
1:27 This one note they all hit is why this is not only my favorite song from the musical but why it’s now the winner of 4 Tony Awards including Best Musical
Every time I get to this number in my many listens of the album I cry at a different line. I’m lucky if I can make it to “We all will meet our end” without sobbing. Sky more than deserved his nomination.
The very first time I heard that they were making The Outsiders into a musical, I said "there's going to be a number between Johnny and Ponyboy called "Stay Gold", and it will make me cry." Lo and behold, I was right. This song got me feeling all kinds of ways. This show deserved its Tony.
Book is boring and contrived. Over hyped plus its just stupid. Don't even get me started on that Coppola mess. Bad hammy acting from good actors. Dillon was the worst ""Lets get em' for Johnny" CORNY. Howell can barely act. We have big brother Daryl telling Pony he can't get in trouble or they will take him to a boys home and them turns around right after the church incident and lets him fight in a rumble? Stupid movie and I bet The Outsiders on broadway won't last too long.
Amazing. I was really really nervous about this but it’s captured perfectly. The tone of the guitar sounds like sunset sun hitting trees and the sides of old buildings and the lyrics are so pure and raw and still pretty simple but deep, capturing that they were still children. But they knew.
This book was a revelation to my 10 year old self. Convinced my Theater teacher to do the play my sophomore year. New guy to our school played Johnny to my Ponyboy, and we became best friends almost instantly. Then one rehearsal he brought his younger sister. She was mostly just there to get away from their parents. She spent most of the rehearsal list in her book and headphones. But while "No Rain" by Blind Melon was playing, i stepped into the spotlight, and recited 'the poem', and she noticed me. And watched me. August 31st we will celebrate our 26th anniversary. 🥰 Thank you S.E. Hinton, you gave me everything. ❤️
@@karmen181 Nothing Gold Can Stay, by Robert Frost. In a true twist of life, my favorite singer, Harry Chapin, mentioned in an interview (or concert, it's on his live album), that his grandfather illustrated Frost's first poetry book. All my life is indeed a circle...
As the oldest of three siblings (from my mom) this was my nightmare growing up, luckily our parents are still alive and healthy and my youngest sibling is 26
Jason Schmidt... man. So good! I love the grittiness of his tone and how much emotion he puts into his singing. Love this show and these guys together!
as somebody whose favorite character was darry ever since reading the book and watching the movie in middle school seeing this musical literally made me SOOO ecstatic ughhhehxhe
OMG. Teared up on my first listen. And I thought I already heard the best in Kelly's show. This song and these singers are awesome. For me, they brought out Darry and Sodapop's familial love better than was shown in the movie. OMG!
When your a 16 year old girl and in love with the outsiders and saw the outsiders on Broadway on april 27 of this year and loved it it almost made me cry 😢 I think I waved at one of the actors and he waved back i loved it it was right after my birthday on april ,23
I saw the show and met the cast after. It was amazing, and the outsiders is one of my favorite books/movies of all time. I sobbed like a baby when they did this song. ❤
