@M4Looney 10 дней назад
Hi, first: which card do you have? second: frequency can only be changed in Wattman or tools like MSI Afterburner. But you could try applying higher or lower power limit and lower voltage (higher voltages can only be applied via hardware mods). From my experience you will get higher performance with lower voltage, but not every card can manage high frequency at low voltage. Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

Hello, the gen frame doesn't work while I'm streaming my PC to my phone. Would you know how to solve the problem?
@M4Looney
@M4Looney 23 дня назад
Hi, no, that way it doesn't work for two reasons: 1) AFMF frame gen does only work locally. "Fake" driver frames cannot be streamed. They can only be observed "locally" on a monitor. 2) AFMF is a driver based feature, meaning you'd need a GPU which can do AFMF like RX 6x00+ or AMD 7x0+ iGPU. Your best approach would be to use DLSS3 or FSR3 frame gen (which is an ingame implementation, which also works on streams). If you can't use DLSS3 FG, just use a DLSS3-to-FSR3-FG mod, like DLSS-Enabler. Works great for me and even under Linux, which as of now doesn't support DLSS3-FG natively. But a game must support DLSS3-FG for frame gen or you could use FSR3 FG when the game supports it. If a game doesn't have frame gen, either use DLSS or FSR or dial down graphics settings. @@losttale1 Hmm, Idk haven't touched my PC for weeks. I'm mostly playing on EndevourOS (Arch-LInux) on my HP Omen 16 now. It runs very well btw (more FPS, has some quirks, though), but I digress. Yeah, this would be bad news, because MPT is a thing that makes RX 6x00- GPUs awesome. Like 1000x better and you can run your GPU undervolted with an actual limit unlike Wattman's voltage "recommendation" (card would use higher voltage if it finds it appropriate). MPT has always been a thing that I actually find better than what's implemented on the RX 7x00 series on the software side. Heck, if the RX 7x00+ had MPT I would really consider buying these. It would be an overclockers dream (600+ W w/ RTX 4090 performance and like 4 GHz xD with lowered voltage, just joking ^^). Yeah, would be a pity also for me choosing between OCUV and newest fixes / performance updates, if it's true. Have you tried MPT with newer drivers? Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel PS: it wouldn't surprise me if AMD did everything to prohibit MPT, since it's like 10 % more perf for free or up to 20 % more power-performance compared to Wattman OC/UV, making their own lineup irrelevant, e.g. buying an RX 6800 and clocking it to XT-level-perf or running an RX 6800 at the power-requirements of a 6700 XT or clocking an 6800 XT above the performance level of a 7900 GRE or such stuff.

I'm running my RX 6800 at 2500 MHz max and 925 mV btw. It's performing better than stock and pulling max 150 W (200 W default) and if I set frame limit I can also run it at ~120 W. That's like RTX 4060 power draw but ~50 % more FPS.

Hi, it's still doing well. No problems whatsoever, very stable and still delivering its full performance. I had to clean vents with a vakuum cleaner, though. Device is now already a year old. Only complaints I have is that the screen brightness is a tad low on my device, but I bought the 250 nits display. Linux (Nobara) is also running well (apart from having problems with Starfield, but that's generally an Nvidia problem). I'm mostly using Windows, though, but could imagine to switch to Linux in the long term. I heard about the black screen issue, but iirc it is only happening with devices where there is IO in the back. There seems to be a defect in a sensor which is responsible for determining whether the lid is closed and if it fails, the screen stays black even if the lid is open. Please read about this and if you consider buying the device, buy it without the IO ports in the back (, where this problem doesn't most probably arise) or get an extended warranty. Hi, never had blackscreen issues, bluescreens or overheating. Everything is fine with my device. Issues may arise on every device, but some laptops are better built than others, it also differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and device to device. Had bluescreen problems with my Asus Tuf Gaming F15 (2021) and even within RMA they didn't find the issue (GPU?), sent it back to me unfixed and I had the pleasure to chat with their support in numerous emails until the RMA period expired. I wanted to go with the Asus ROG Ally first, bc there were no alternatives for performant handheld PCs, but fortunately I didn't and bought the Omen 16. Wise decision. I mean that is a sample size of 1 considering Asus (never had any products from them before), but I read a lot reddit-posts that the issues with their laptops were firmware related, but even two years later there was no fix for my problem. Sry, for this long (unrelated) answer, but like I tried everything with the Asus device several hours a day for months, they should have paid me "insury money" ^^... Only had the HP Pavillion Gaming 15 (2017?), the Omen 16 and the Asus Tuf Gaming 15 as laptop devices. The HP laptops were fine (the HP Pavillion would bluescreen under very heavy load but once in a month or so and I didn't renew thermal paste for years and I don't remember ever cleaning it from inside), the Omen is a year in possession approx, no problems so far, the Asus was garbage. I run my XFX SWFT at 250w GPU TDP, 250a GFX, and 40 SOC. These cards have full fat double 8pin's so it should be able to handle quite a bit. If you have 500mhz core clock just use MoreClockTool or Radeon software to adjust the minimum GPU clock to around 2300 or 2200. I rarely see the gpu drop under 2400-2500 on demanding titles.

@M4Looney 5 месяцев назад
Not easy to answer: - which display (device) size suitable for you? - display resolution: 1080p might look good on a low display size like 15 or 16" and performance will be better. With upscaling or using 1080p resolution you'd have a more blurry image (1080p screen vs 1440p screen). RTX 4080 should deliver enough performance for 1440p for now (but will change later in time). Also if the 17" is only 1080p the screen will be a tad blurrier than on 16". - I would go with an AMD CPU 'cause Intel ones might run with a higher power target / run hotter. There are contraverses about stabilities with recent Intel CPUs. AMD CPUs run at a comparable performance level like Intel ones at a lower TDP. I had an Intel laptop from Asus which was bluescreening like crazy in games every 5 - 20 mins but it could've been an exception. Also Intel CPUs have efficiency cores and these are much weaker than performance cores (Intel skimps on "real" cores and when the comparable AMD CPU has more cores it's preferable). - if I were you I'd try to search for an AMD 7840HS and 16" 1080p Omen. The 7840HS also has a very good iGPU and you could also use AFMF upscaling even together with the NVidia GPU (made a video about that recently) and when using the device on battery you could also use the 780m iGPU solely (for emulators for example).

For core oc, core will most likely recover if pushed too hard but mem OC may lead to persistent damage. Sure, a light mem OC might work fine, but gains are small, too. It strongly depends on the price point and you're missing on DLSS3 frame gen but FSR3 is on the rise and many new games support it. Raytracing is also faster on 4000 Nvidias vs 3000 ones. Material quality is very good, seems like a mix of plastic and metal. Cool device to play around with its features: you can use Radeon features alongside Nvidia rendering games like AFMF, you can play emulators on battery without the need to use the RTX 4060 (longer play sessions), etc. The screen on my model is only 250 nits but there are better configured models. @M4Looney 6 месяцев назад
Hi, so you did get it to work when using "iGPU for rendering"? What do you exactly mean by that? AFMF will only work when the "displaying" GPU is a Radeon GPU. There is currently no way to disable the Radeon GPU or not set the rendering GPU to integrated graphics in Nvidia settings AND have AFMF or any kind of Radeon feature enabled. Even if you set the preferred device to the integrated graphics in Nvidia control panel the game will still be rendered on the Nvidia GPU by Windows and if it won't, set it in the graphic settings in Windows as your preferred GPU. What is the point to disable the integrated graphics? You gain 2 - 5 % performance at max but you lose the capabilities of the iGPU (like AFMF, RSR, etc.) and if you switch to battery, battery life with Nvidia only will be much worse. Like I understand it, you also lose Freesync-support on the laptop display if you disable the Radeon iGPU. Hope it was helpful, Looney's Tech Channel

Hi, 105 + 15W. The TDP will most likely not be reached anyway in most games as the GPU is voltage limited. Typical power draw is 80 - 90W. There are exceptions to this but not many (not one I've found so far). Unfortunately one can't increase voltage above 1V (iirc). So for now it doesn't really matter if the RTX 4060m GPU is TDP-limited at 90W or higher. But RTX 4060ms with a lower TDP than 90W will be TDP limited. Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

@M4Looney
@M4Looney 7 месяцев назад
Hi, for 4k video editing I don't know actually. Is x264 benchmark a valid tool to bench performance for you? Here a benchmark comparison from notebooks check (but it's from the 13500h vs 7840hs): www.notebookcheck.net/R7-7840HS-vs-i5-13500H_14948_14727.247596.0.html The 13500hx is a 6 core (!) plus 8 "efficient" cores (without multithreading) whereas the 7840hs is a "full" 8 c/16 t. The 13500h is actually slower than the 7840hs in multicore performance but chances are that the 13500hx is a tad faster than the 7840hs (should only be a little bit faster though). For example: assume 6 cores Intel are like as fast as AMD ones, so: 6 / 8 = 0.75. But Intel has efficiency cores which contributes to that equasion by a little (efficiency cores are a lot slower than the real cores - they're like a core 9gen performance, we are now at the 14/15 gen). So against the 13500h the AMD 7840hs is a tad faster in considering all benchmarks at notebookcheck: 46 vs 41 whereas they have no results for the 13500hx but they have the results for the 13700h which has the same core config as the 13500hx. Also see results in notebookcheck: www.notebookcheck.net/i7-13700H-vs-R7-7840HS_14721_14948.247596.0.html The 13700h is also a little slower than the 7840hs on notebookcheck's benchmark suite (46 vs 44) but on x264 benchmark the Intel 13700h is a little faster than the the 7840hs (100 % vs 89 %). So with Intel you get 6 core CPUs which are accelerated by slow core by a bit and on AMD you get a full 8 core CPU. Yes, the 13500hx should be faster than the 7840hs in video editing but the 13500hx needs to power 14 cores (which turns out to be a little faster in encoding but slower in other workloads and it runs at much higher clocks than AMD) whereas the AMD 7840hs is a very efficient CPU with its 8 real cores. For gaming Intel might be faster but at a price: temperature and noise levels. I previously owned an Asus Tuf Gaming F15 with the 11800h and it ran mega hot. I couldn't even get it significantly cooler by undervolting (to the max) and it bluescreened heavily. I assume that the cause of system crashes were the high temperatures (90 - 100 °C even in games) and that thing was loud (!) now with the Omen the CPU hits 80 °C at full load in cinebench and 80 °C in games (CPU and GPU share heatpipes) and the Omen is half as loud as the old Asus. So, no, the Intel has 6 + 8 cores and not 14 (as the cores are not compareable) and the 7840hs should be only a little slower than the 13500hx in video editing (and most likely the GPU will help a lot with acceleration of those workloads) and fast enough for video editing plus the AMD having the lower power budget and can be cooled well (especially by the Omen). The Omen 16 also has Intel variants with the 13700h. And another important part is also how thr two devices compare apart from that. The Omen 16 that I got don't have fast USB for example (only 5 gbit/s) but there are faster 10 gbit/s options (Idk if there are AMD options with thunderbolt, though). That would be my only real downpoint as everything else is real good (materials, battery, performance, cooling), ok, the 250 nits screen that I got could be brighter for my likings but I'm indoors most of the time and nightactive anyway ;-). @M4Looney
@M4Looney 7 месяцев назад
@@Theunknownguy001 1) no the ryzen 7840hs produces less heat due to lower core count and wattage limit (compared to compareable Intel CPUs. Already wrote about that. 2) Ryzen CPUs are very stable if not overclocking or undervolting (which you can't do anyway on Laptop Ryzens 7000h series) 3) For editing Intel 13500hx is a little faster but not meaningfully. For gaming they are on par. The Intels don't keep their high wattage limits for long (if you run Cinebench for example multiple times, scores will go down). 4) never owned a Helios laptop. Just compare the speccs (material quality, battery life, screen, performance, support, etc.). Read reviews. I can't tell which is better (I didn't know that Helios exists btw.). In many points it's highly subjective what device fits better for you. Some do prefer a high material quality or looks, others don't care. Some need a long lasting battery, others don't even unplug the devices. Some need a high performance CPU, others just need good GPU performance, etc. Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

Hi, it is. For input latency you should check for yourself. There are people out there who are sensitive to input lag and others aren't. Like I said it's best to use it in singleplayer games and with a gamepad. Furthermore the game should at least run at 60 FPS to ensure a good experience (before any frame gen applied). Are you happy with the Omen so far? Which version do you have? Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

@@agentphoenixtm642 Hi, good to know you like it. Are you on balanced or on performance profile? Have you already removed the clogging dust underneath the device (with something like an old toothbrush)? Some games can run with a little bit more wattage than normally and some games do push CPU a little more (and the GPU and CPU share at least one heatpipe). So normal games run at 80 - 90 W but it may happen that some games actually use up more of the wattage limit of 120 W and in some cases games are not as voltage limited but more power hungry. 80 - 85 °C is still good (I assume you're not indervolting?. 87 °C is throttle temp. @@agentphoenixtm642 Like depending on the game I also get 82 °C on the GPU but in most games it's around 80 °C max. I think it's fine for you, too. Maybe not enough paste is applied on the GPU or cooler contact is uneven. But it's also far away from being critical. On balanced profile how high is RPM? If you have the right to open the device in your country (laws might apply), you can clean the fans. Dust tends to gather at the fan blades (and there is only little spacing between them) and cooling finns, so cleaning might help a lot. My CPU also like goes to 80 - 84 °C on the CPU in CPU intensive games and 80 - 82 °C max but that's ok, because I'm on balanced profile and fans stay at 4200 RPM which is ok. My old Asus Tuf Gaming F15 was like double that loud. And GPU was always above 85 °C after a few minutes running below advertized speed (RTX 3060) and CPU was at 90 - 100 °C at gaming. At full load it would throttle down and running at 95 - 100 °C. Undervolting helped a little bit but device was BSODing nonetheless. Much progress for me and stability, performance and cooling is ok now with the Omen.

wow this is really interesting what is the refresh rate of you laptop screen
@M4Looney
@M4Looney 7 месяцев назад
Hi, 144 Hz. Ofc it's best to limit below refresh rate to prevent screen tearing. So the NVidia GPU should then be capped at 72 Hz and then the AFMF activated (which will double FPS then) but some people aren't very sensible to screen tearing. Freesync will start to show screen tearing above refresh rate iirc. Another idea could be to limit refresh rate on the Radeon Software and keep Nvidia GPU at a higher frame cap (which should reduce input lag due to higher frame rate and in best case reducing load from CPU). The cool thing is that if a game is on a high load and still only manages to achieve under 72 FPS you'd have 144 FPS anyway. Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

Hi, it strongly depends on the use case, though. You will get a few % more performance if you run from mux switch but if you're on battery it will decrease runtime significantly (5 - 15 W more at idle). Also the 780m igpu is a powerful solution especially with FSR(3) and might to be considered on old games / emulators (especially on battery). Apart from that even if you don't change anything the RTX 4060 will be used by Windows for 3d applications and for me it's running flawlessly this way. Another note: it seems that Freesync is only selectable on the AMD GPU and I can't find the Gsync settings in NVidia control panel but it also may be that it will be automatically enabled nonetheless. One thing I miss though is that I can only enable AFMF in Radeon Software if I deactivate the RTX 4060. If anyone knows a way to enable it alongside the NVidia GPU pls let me know. I got it working once and it was amazing to see Witcher 3 and Starfield running with DLSS3 and the FPS being doubled by AFMF on top. But it only worked once and after a reboot it stopped working :-(. Hi, so far I'm happy with it. The RTX 4060 mobile is as fast as the desktop variant. Every game I played so far was above 60 FPS but newer games tend to use more resources so one need to use DLSS / FSR (3) / high settings / turn off ray tracing. Compared to my RX 6800 in my desktop PC it's quite slower but especially with DLSS3 fast enough for 1080p gaming. For productive use you will be happy. I also got the device for programming / encoding videos. Didn't program on it, though as I use my PC with a bigger screen for now. But there are two downsides on this device: 1.) only 16 GB RAM 2.) depending on the model it only got a 250 nits screen with only 60 % sRGB. Get the 100 % sRGB 300 nits variant if (more) accurate colors are important to you. 16 GB RAM is still ok for gaming but for productive use it might be too low. Just upgrade them then. Hi, I misunderstood your question sry... Could be different issues. 1) How much wattage does your power supply have? 2) PSU related: is your GPU connected to the PSU through 2 separate PCIe-cables? If it's only connected with one cable but on this cable are two connectors, fix it asap by using 2 cables. This causes many issues on older PSUs (even on Singlerail ones). 3) Is your card and CPU and RAM at stock settings? If not try default settings one by one. 4) Software + Windows: Go to taskmanager and on Autostart tab disable everything, but Windows stuff. In the taskbar search for "msconfig" or access it through task manager, then disable all services in the services tab that are not from Windows (there is a checkbox for that). Stuff might break what you could need - take pictures here. Windows tend to break from time to time, run "sfc /scannow" in cmd with admin rights. 5) drivers: update all drivers using Windows update or do it manually. The AMD driver is best obtained from AMD as is the AMD chipset driver. For other drivers use your MB manufacturers software (on page it might be outdated). 6) uninstall every tuning / RGB software. If you have MSI afterburner installed - remove it (there are some settings which can interfere with AMD driver / Wattman). 7) check temps during gaming / desktop use with HWInfo64. The 5800x should not run higher than 90 °C. The GPU-Hotspot of the RX 6800 not higher than 95 °C. If a component runs too hot just set fans to max to rule out temp issues. Maybe I will have other ideas but for now post your components in more detail pls. Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

Ok, so fortunately it looks like your GPU should be fine. So the GPU seems to not be fully utilized. If GPU utilization would be high and you'd have stutters then, it would certainly be the GPU. Are clocks of GPU like you'd expect? Maybe your RAM is clocked too aggressive or is defect. Maybe you'll need a BIOS flash. Lookup your MB on the manufacturer side, go to support, download latest non-Beta-BIOS and follow instructions on that page. Most likely you need to format a USB stick with FAT32. Does the issue happen in every game you tried? Do your games run fine the first 5 min (if I understand correctly)? Pls run a 3DMark TimeSpy and compare results on the result page. GPU should be somewhere around average when on default settings. Everything running stock (no overclock or undervolt)? To rule out software (could also be some preinstalled stuff running crazy): 1.) open notepad 2.) type in anything 3.) don't save 4.) shutdown your PC (don't forget to save all important stuff before doing that) 5.) what will happen is: your PC tries to shutdown but it can't entirely bc notepad has unsafed progress. Almost everything else will be closed (like services and programs) by the operating system. System will still function and you can run your tests without having anything open what can interfere with Windows. 6.) abort shutdown That should bring down CPU usage also and maybe will temporarly fix the issue. If that already fixes it, the problem is on Windows / software side. If not we can look further into it.

Yeah, I would even argue that even the RTX 4080 mobile is too weak for 1440p. The 1080p variants are always more performance friendly. For gaming only I would choose 1080p because what's the point if you have to upscale heavily or reduce details just to have a higher resolution? For productivity use that's another topic ofc. Another point is that 16" are just too narrow and 1080p should be enough (if viewing distance is not too close).

@longhoang8328 7 месяцев назад
oc memory speed brings almost 0% gain over overclocking the chip, besides if you overclock the memory, the overall temp of the GPU would go up. Also, the mem temp at stock is already high so I wouldn't recommend to oc it unless you want to break some records in Timespy or something
@M4Looney
@M4Looney 7 месяцев назад
@@longhoang8328 Hi, thanks for the reply. Generally speaking and through experience this is true but do you know if this also applies to the RTX 40x0 GPUs, especially for the RTX 4060? The RTX 4060 is on a 128 bit-bus and has a generally low memory bandwidth. Does it benefit more from mem-OC than most other GPUs? Also: I guess one might need to OC a lot more to kinda overcome the bit-bus issue and VRAM does not have that much OC-reserves to actually overcome this "crippling"... Next point is: why does it actually work (fast enough) to not matter (as much) since it's on 128-bit bus *and* having "only" PCIe 4.0 x8 connection (do laptops not have only x4? - will check it in GPU-z later) making it only like PCIe 3.0 x16/x8? Maybe it's because of relatively large L2 cache making cache misses less frequent. But if cache misses (which it will for sure at some point) GPU must obtain large amounts of data (textures, models, buffers, etc.) through a tiny bit-bus and if the assets aren't actually in the VRAM through a slow PCIe 4.0 x8/x4 connection where CPU, system RAM and for worst case even SSD/HDD (which again are even slower than system RAM)... Man if I think about it: a lot of modern games are streaming assets a lot (in some cases the whole time like UE 4/5). No wonder that games became like "unresponsive" looking back the last 5 years (even when you have top tier hardware). For sure that doesn't apply for games that do not stream as much or are lower quality but what's the point of having graphical improvement over time / the trend to open world games then? What is Nvidia smoking when seeing the trend / reality? Sure they wanna sell their GPUs later but doesn't that also mean that people get disappointed over time (and start to skip their GPU releases then)? Selling bad designed products for a high price won't work out forever or will it be like Apple forever (hence Apple products are at least good) where the images carries the products anyway (be it worse to competitors or not)? Anyway what I noticed is that games tend to run much worse in regard of frame times than ever even on my main PC with even the RX 6800 and 32 GB of VRAM. Like 8 - 9 years ago I played GTA 5 on a heavily overclocked Core2Quad Q6600 + a GTX 580 1.5 GB (1680 * 1050 res) and even though it was on reduced texture settings the game "fluidity" was much better than on a new system in current time (though the games have evolved technically). I just wanna vomit and cry... Maybe I'm too sensible for frame time spikes but it has to be mentioned even if nobody is reading or noticing! A simple fix would just be to load like more than 50 % of game assets in RAM on game start thus avoiding to load game assets from storage devices later but that would increase system specs to 32 - 64 GB for sure and game devs want to have low requirements for obvious capitalistic reasons. Anyway thanks for reading, Looney's Tech Channel
@M4Looney
@M4Looney 7 месяцев назад
Future Looney here: I think the only reason this works out actually is that the RTX 4060 has a relatively low performance thus making the memory bandwidth less relevant. Don't forget that the RTX 4060 is a 1080p card where the low resolution it is capable of doesn't require that much of IO-processes if it's used solely in that resolution. So it's even better from my point of view to get a 1080p like screen in a laptop for example 'cause you can't run many modern games on higher resolutions w/ high+ settings, making DLSS/FSR upscaling unavoidable or making content "smeary" if running 1080p content and relying on monitor upscaling... DLSS upscaling and frame generation becoming more important and thus decreasing image quality. Heck if you want Raytracing / pathtracing like in Cyberpunk or Alan Wake 2 where it actually matters you'll be rendering at 540p or lower and even need to increase latency with Frame Gen with fake frames what will make games flicker (though it is not very noticeable). For upscaling ghosting is an issue, too which may or may not be very noticeable... 😭

Hello. I have the same laptop, can you tell me the maximum ram capacity that i can upgrade it to and what type ram should i use?
@M4Looney
@M4Looney 8 месяцев назад
Hi, the maximum capacity should be 2*48 GB. I'm not quite sure if the MB on the Omen will support 96 GB but 64 GB (2*32) should be fine. The Omen 16 uses DDR5-5600 SODIMM Laptop-RAM. If you can use higher specced RAM like 6000 oder 6400 SODIMM Idk... Maybe the higher specced RAM will just clock at 5600 then but if it will clock higher you might get instability since the AMD CPUs at least on desktop are highly sensitive to RAM speeds. The easiest way to find appropriate RAM is to input the AMD based Omen 16 models into ebay search like: "xd0174ng RAM ddr5 sodimm". Take in consideration that there won't be many results and try other HP Omen 16 (AMD)-models. What you could do, too is to order DDR5-5600 SODIMM RAM, hope the best and if it's not working for you, return the RAM. Also buy brands considered as good like Corsair, Teamgroup, G.Skill, Kingston, etc. and if there are options with lower CL-latency considere them as well (depending on the price you want to spend) Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

I'm looking at a Omen 16 with that same processor but with a rtx 4070 and a 1080p 165Hz and 100% sRGB with 300 nits screen for 1299€. Looks likes the refresh version of the Omen 2023. What do you say about the temperatures and fan noise while normal browsing and, more important, while gaming?
@M4Looney
@M4Looney 9 месяцев назад
Hi, that sounds like a very good deal! Temps look good on mine. Should be similar with the RTX 4070 like I read. So there are three default profiles (Eco, Balanced, Performance). Didn't try Eco for long but usually good when using battery. For gaming / CPU / GPU tasks: The balanced profile will run up to 200 MHz slower on the GPU compared with performance profile. Might be that RTX 4070 will then use less wattage. Different story on the RTX 4060, though. The RTX 4060 is allowed to pull 120 W but hardly ever exceeds 90 W. The performance profile will run its fans at screaming loud 6200 RPM as the temp target will be decreased significantly. So temp will not exceed like 78 - 80 °C on both GPU and CPU. Btw. "reasonable" operating temps are 87 °C on the GPU and over 90 °C for the Ryzen processor. The balanced profile on the other hand temps will be quite the same (not exceeding 80 °C) but fans will be at around 4200 RPM. It is audible but not disturbing. Compared to many laptops out there that would be considered silent (as laptops are often more annoying than Desktop-PCs - squeeze vs humm for example - decibels are not the only factor here). So to sum up for gaming: "balanced" is the way to go if you don't want to tune fans manually (you can). Using the GPU as reference is also possible btw. The Omen 16 has a lot of cooling headroom but prefers higher clocks in the performance profile so fans get loud then (but still then has a lot of headroom). If you want ever lower fan speeds than on balanced profile just set the "hot to cold"-slider more towards hot in Omen app. Also if you know that the CPU is not the limiting factor just set the reference to GPU (like for single player games) effectively allowing the device to keep the GPU cool and only considering the CPU if it gets to hot for it. Normal browsing in no problem. RPM will either be minimum or if a highspeed download / Windows update is being performed will go up to 4000 RPM for a short period. Again the laptop doesn't need such low temps like HP set the fan curve to. Even 0 rpm can be set in BIOS for example. All in all a very capable cooling solution considering the competing laptops. There isn't a refreshed version of the Omen. The Omen is just differently configured. Or is there already a 2024 version out there? Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel
@RubCal96
@RubCal96 9 месяцев назад
@@M4Looney Thanks for the detailed answer, appreciated! Yeah maybe it's not really a refresh per say but a different configuration, I guess it varies from country to country, I'm just not 100% sure this one has a second M.2 ssd slot. About the wattage of the 4070 from what it says on HP's website it points to 140w, although it's been already tested that these gpus don't really benefit from such high wattage in terms of performance or can even reach them, 100w or so is where the performance stagnates looks like. Anyway, and about the overall feeling of the construction, does it feel solid and premium or you can see some weaknesses? And one last thing, does HP allow you to fiddle around with undervolting and overclocking the CPU and GPU either through it's software or other software, or even in the BIOS? Hi, depends on usecase / user. For me it's enough / I got used to it. Sure there are better display options out there. Went to a local tech shop today (Saturn) to buy a VR headset and looked at their gaming laptop section while waiting. The laptops I've seen were similar specced but most of them had an inferior build quality. Asus was okay and Medion (Aldi's brand here) but the Lenovo and the Acer were looking or feeling quite 🤷. Not saying these are bad devices but each vendor must save somewhere to deliver compatible prices (on midrange or budget lineup). Everyone has different priorities I guess. The ROG Ally was interesting. Would've been a pretty nice device even wouldn't have a problem using touch to navigate through Windows but the size... Far too big for my likings and there could've be definitively more screen in the same package. The Omen also has some downsides e.g. 250 nits screen, only 5 gbit/s USB and lockdown BIOS. All in all still happy with the Omen since it runs stable as hell (hello Asus Tuf Gaming from bsod-hell). Returned home with a Pico 4 btw. Must set it up these days and find out how to record VR. I'm running Garuda for quite some time, 2 years i think. I used mint for a couple years earlier, and it worked fine. Garuda and Nobara come with really nice defaults tho, and you can run almost anything right away with Glorious Eggroll's enhancements. Most other distros will need you to set up many things by hand, which is not a problem for most daily linux users, but could be a deal breaker for a new user. Chose Garuda mostly because of it being an Arch fork, meaning it may be a bit easier to break, but you get the latest packages. This can mean that a new game or perhaps a new piece of hardware can work great much sooner than elsewhere. Anyway, gaming on linux is now really viable, to the point it's getting harder and harder to find games or hardware setups that WON'T work. That's a huge improvement compared to when I started using linux for my daily pc with Mandrake 10, when getting games to work could either prove impossible or take hours of troubleshooting. Most of the problems are now solved except some DRM or anti-cheat systems. And those things are so invasive or even potentially harmful that they shouldn't exist in the first place.

As much as I want to move back to Linux Mint, EndeavorOS has the most trouble free OS for me. :)

Is there a 165hz option?
@M4Looney

Hi, yes there is: www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/omen-gaming-laptop-16-xf0087nr That is at least directly from HP. If this model is available in retail in your country is another question. The model is "xf0087nr". It has the RTX 4060 with the AMD R7 7840HS. Surely there are options with Intel CPUs and or higher / lower specced GPUs. Intel CPUs do run at higher temperature, though (and can't hold boost clocks as long as AMD CPUs). Also the RTX 4070 mobile is ofc faster but only around ~15%. If you find a good deal go with the RTX 4070 but when for example the 4070 model is over 200 $/€ more expensive the RTX 4060 option is also viable. Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

Hi, i´m trying to make it work on a Android TV. I have also a AMD GPU, but moonlight cant find my pc in local network. Any ideas what could be wrong ?

Hi, do you have sunshine installed on the AMD PC? Are both devices in the same network? Maybe - for some reason - your PC is not being displayed due to PC having a codec active that your TV doesn't recognize Idk. As I understand it sunshine is like a fake moonlight for any moonlight client Idk exactly. Another idea is that a firewall is blocking moonlight or sunshine. Which TV are you using? Mabe the api is just different between the two. Try connecting with a smartphone (should have moonlight somewere on the store / internet) to rule out the PC connection. Do you have sunshine running on the AMD PC? You then can configure it through the web interface. Here you need to open the PIN tab (but I'm sure it should be found by the TV anyway to connect using the PIN). Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

Can you confirm how many ssd slots you have by opening as customer support says it has 2 ?
@M4Looney

Hi, that depends on the model of the HP Omen 16. I know not much is written about that. To answer your question: my HP Omen 16 with the RTX 4060 and the R7 7840 HS and the 144 HZ 250 nits screen has only one SSD slot. Higher configured models most likely do have 2 slots, though. I am planning to get same but GPU 4070 for 1300 including 3 year warranty. Whats ur experience? pros and cons of it. How is it compared to ROG G16 4070 or legion?

@M4Looney 10 месяцев назад
Hi, the laptop is pretty decent especially for the price. pros: - performance (components running at advertized speeds) - cooling solution is adequate (if running on balanced profile fans will be tolerable ~4200 RPM while gaming and temps are well below tjmax with enough reserves) - laptop is well build (materials, hinges seem good) - battery is ok (about 4 hours of Twitch streaming at 80 - 90 % display brightness) - prize - sound quality (not good compared to real sound system ofc but decently loud and not disturbing like on other devices) - wifi is fast - snappy Windows experience neutral: - keyboard: keys feel good but if you press them it's either full press or no press - hard to describe - keys are using membranes so no mechanical keyboard. Can't compare to other devices. cons: - display brightness only 250 nits on my modell (colors seem accurate, only 62 % srgb) - I got used to it but I wouldn't recommend using the device outside. - BIOS lacking options especially for undervolting CPU / assigning more vram for igpu - only 5 gbit/s USB3 on my model I can't compare to current devices as I only owned a 2021 Asus Tuf Gaming F15 and compared to that everything is better. The only pro on the Tuf side would be the "toughness" of the device (mil std like drop tests etc). Greetings, Looney's Tech Channel

@M4Looney Thanks a lot for taking your time for detailed feedback. Looks like they made few changes to newer 4070 model.
