A comprehensive music harmony course is being built. From basic to advanced, step-by-step (but not in order...), clear and concise lessons and tutorials. I am Pedro Dias - I'm a music professor in Brazil and a practicing musician, and I want to help you to understand harmony and to use it creatively.
This is the most thorough explaination of negative harmony theory ive seen. I thought it was 3 theories from what i learned. Mirror Harmony (axis on the root) Negative Harmony (axis between 1/5) Movable axis Harmony. (6 on and 6 in between) You covered all that and then alot more! Great work!
Hey. Thanks. One of the better videos on negative harmony I've found. Has anyone experimented with the idea of having a different axis point beyond the 5th? Would they still even be called negative Harmony or does it become something else? Or is any axis flipping "negative"?
All major/minor triad possibilities should be covered but make sure to remember symmetric property (i.e. if looking for VI remember to read right to left as well) Major and Minor Scales Diatonic Triads I = i ii = bVII iii = bVI IV = v V = iv vi = bIII vii° = ii° Nondiatonic Triads bII = vii bii = VII II = bvii biii = VI III = bvi #IV = #iv #iv = #IV
🎉❤😊 Beautiful explanation. I'm so hapoy to see it. Some 10 years ago I was crazy at studing harmony and figuring it out. I found the pitch class "clocks" an indispentable tool and drew notebooks of them trying to understand what's going on. I found what I called the "mirror" of the diatonic scale which explained the majority of various oddities. Today I learnt people call it the negative harmony.
Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to put this together, the animated visuals couldn't of been easy to make but go a long way with helping one's understanding.
Thanks! I'm working on that! I think it's something with my nasal septum/sinus + a bit of overcompression! Next one (in a few days) will be better! ;-)
Great tutorial! By the way, you mentioned a couple of RU-vid people who're working with negative harmony but there were no Jacob Collier examples. Do you know any specific songs where JC has used NH?
Thanks! Unfortunately, to my knowledge, JC never indicated a song/arrangement by him where he used NH. I suppose he kind of keeps it in mind as a tool not so much to transform (reharmonizing, for instance) existing music but to compose with it - although I also wouldn't be able to indicate a possible example. (I must confess that, although being a fan, I do not listen to his music a lot...)
@@LearnHarmonyNow Thanks for your reply. I'm similar about JC... While I've marvelled at the musicianship on several of his RU-vid videos, I've never felt compelled to sit down and listen to a whole album of his stuff.
@@markus_anthony to be honest I did that with only one album - a nice journey, really. but something seems a little "over" to me - not sure if it's the information rate, the dynamic compression...
Very interesting! But...i don't understand the difference between your Layered + Combined. I hear the difference, but not sure what notes your adding/omitting. Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
Hi Tony! I probably should have explained that better! It's only a matter of voicing really. No pitch classes are omitted or added.. In the "combined" voicing I omitted only the doublings, and tried to voice each chord as one single complex chord. In the layered version I played one chord above the other. I hope this helps!
Yes, on guitar we have only the 2nd option, and still having to omit something. But there's always the option of arpeggiating/melodizing the thing... Thanks!
Great lesson #2 w/ expansive visuals! The Rachmaninov/Paganini example doesn't follow the 1st Rule of Negative Harmony: placing the Axis b/t the I + V of the original key. But it is a great example of intervallic inversion and melodic substitution, obviously! It's one of best variation on a theme, ever.
Very nice videos, you should have more views! It was very useful to sum up the work of Ernst Levy and prepare some explanations for confused fellow colleagues.
Thanks again. I studied the first video. It made this concept very clear. That is the best video I saw on the subject. I did share it and I will let my students at McGill university to watch it as well. Again, thanks for sharing your work.
Thank you for this video.. I will study it. I had read the theory book of Ernst Levy and the way you explain this concept with the graph makes it easier to grasp. I will share the video.
Man, your video is very very cool... you should share it on Jacobs Collier Reddit... lot's of people will be interested on this good explanation. Thank you for this and I hope you can keep doing more!
