Part 2 of the lesson on Negative Harmony. Here I explain the concept, as proposed by Jacob Collier and based on a theory by Ernst Levy - but also based on the centuries-old procedure of intervallic inversion. The visual aid of the pitch-class space makes understanding of the mechanism of negative harmony very easy. I also explore examples and possibilities for chord substitution and reharmonization.

🎉❤😊 Beautiful explanation. I'm so hapoy to see it. Some 10 years ago I was crazy at studing harmony and figuring it out. I found the pitch class "clocks" an indispentable tool and drew notebooks of them trying to understand what's going on. I found what I called the "mirror" of the diatonic scale which explained the majority of various oddities. Today I learnt people call it the negative harmony.

Great lesson #2 w/ expansive visuals! The Rachmaninov/Paganini example doesn't follow the 1st Rule of Negative Harmony: placing the Axis b/t the I + V of the original key. But it is a great example of intervallic inversion and melodic substitution, obviously! It's one of best variation on a theme, ever.

Great tutorial! By the way, you mentioned a couple of RU-vid people who're working with negative harmony but there were no Jacob Collier examples. Do you know any specific songs where JC has used NH?

Thanks! Unfortunately, to my knowledge, JC never indicated a song/arrangement by him where he used NH. I suppose he kind of keeps it in mind as a tool not so much to transform (reharmonizing, for instance) existing music but to compose with it - although I also wouldn't be able to indicate a possible example. (I must confess that, although being a fan, I do not listen to his music a lot...)

@@LearnHarmonyNow Thanks for your reply. I'm similar about JC... While I've marvelled at the musicianship on several of his RU-vid videos, I've never felt compelled to sit down and listen to a whole album of his stuff.

@@markus_anthony to be honest I did that with only one album - a nice journey, really. but something seems a little "over" to me - not sure if it's the information rate, the dynamic compression...
