I started collecting at age 12 in 1970. What got me started was my mom had saved a few old silver dollars and when she saw my interest in them she let me have them. She was so sweet.
If money were no object and only one Ike can be acquired, which would you recommend: a 1971 MS 66+ or a 1972 Type II MS66? Assume both have great eye appeal.
Most commemorative coins are a bust. Not worth the premium the mint charges. I think the program has been a failure on the whole, which is sad but true. Most of the coin shops in my area dont even bother and put the modern commemorative coins in the melt pile unless they are in holders, and they tend to stay in inventory for far longer than regular coins and even bullion. Very sad, but it is what it is.
The main problem seems to be that everyone there is very old (as am I) and with no younger generation of collectors coming up, this stuff will CRASH in a decade or so. Same as other serious antique collectables. Look at antique furniture, art pottery, silver, etc. Today's collectors are all about that plastic slab and the Morgan dollars inside, if the PCGS grade is certified high enough...or star wars action figures. They would not recognize a stared rev 1794 cent if it bite them on the seat of their pants.
Let's not forget that a Lawyer offered a member of the Walton family $5,000 for the 1913 Nickel after it had been deemed a "fake" following George Walton's untimely death in the early 1960's.
I just bought a very large collection from someone who purchased a LOT of these types of coins and sets from Rick Tomask's tv show. I offered the most I could to still make a little bit......these poor folks were buried in these damn things!!!
No mintmark is just Philadelphia, Lincoln cents just had the P mintmark in 2017 and no other year. Dimes were like that for a while too but in recent years they added it
Birds typically have an odd number of tail feathers with one in the middle and an equal number on both sides of it, so someone must have judged that the 8-tail feather version was anatomically incorrect.
