I’ve been a backpacker for a long time. So ALL of my gear is on my back. It takes longer to blow up your sleeping pad using your lungs. Fluff your sleeping bag. It takes 30 minutes to set up camp. And then another 30 minutes to tear down. I’m carrying 60 lbs of gear on my back. Roof top tent sounds awfully cushy. Set up is faster and your car is doing all of the work. After watching your video it still sounds like wimpy lazy people camp with cars but I’m 50. Getting difficult to carry 60 lbs up 3500 feet to camp
When I first learned about them, I thought they were pretty cool. But then I thought they're not very practical and they are an eyesore that I don't want on my truck year round. So I just got me a truck bed tent and an air mattress. Served the purpose, easy to break down and jam under the tonneau cover and then I'm off to the next location.
It seems like the use case for RTT is very specific. I would not want one for traditional camping. An RTT might be ideal for the couple with a dog or two that needs to travel across country a few times a year. Rather than finding hotels, you could just park in Flying Js, and have internet access, showers, and bathrooms.
I’m cheap so I went with a XL tent cod that gives me all the flexibility I want Kamp Rite Oversized tent Cod Quick setup Light Compact Can even place on roof rack if safely is a concern
You seam to have covered just about everything and you did a great job. One thing I thought about a rooftop tent is i ate watermellon and drank to much beer and now it is 4:00 am and I have to go pee! Wow that was a tall step now I've fallen and to drunk to get up. 😝
Check out our videos- rooftop on a small offroad trailer we built was a game changer. Also, using the changing room to set up a propane heater. Camped with kids all winter!
You don't need 4 low from east to west. I found the trail easy in an Outback. The rocks are annoying and a crawl ratio would be nice, but it's not necessary. This doesn't mean that you should not be a competent driver with basic off-road skills however.
Watching your videos has helped tremendously! I was thinking about a RTT. Not now. Being prior service; a bivouac tents are in my DNA. I’m definitely going with this system. Never heard of “swag” tents. I’m definitely a fan.
I have that cooler and it is old. It is also my favorite. Some sort of cleaner spray cleaner, like Mister Clean with bleach and a scratch pad would have that looking brand new again. Mine looks brand new and it's what I used on it.
This is a BIVY role bag with a mattress ... due to weight not useful for cyclists or hikers - if there would be inflatable matters inside different story-smaller package/ weight, but the way it is constructed is suitable for motorbikes or overlanders?
Whatever works for you dude. I travel in remote deserts here in Australia, solo, for extended periods, setting up at dusk and moving on daily, covering thousands of kms. The fast pack up and down, the safety of being 8 feet up and the avoidance of towing make RTTs perfect for my application. I drive a 79 Series Landcruiser which has plenty of capacity. YMMV. It seems all your problems arise from the fact you bought a rubbish tent, unsuitable for your application and put it on a light vehicle. You should get a caravan.
G’day. Great review of our Aussie swag. I have been using swags camping for many years in the bush here in Australia. All weathers, hot, cold etc and never felt uncomfortable. Swags are a tradition here in Oz, nothing like sleeping under the stars in a good Aussie swag. Manufacturers here have streamlined them in recent years for extreme comfort. Could be a great market opening up in the States. Again, great job on the . Cheers 🇦🇺👍
I have the same cooler & lined it with SmartSHIELD -3mm 16 inchx25Ft Reflective Insulation roll, Foam Core Radiant Barrier, Thermal Insulation Shield - Engineered Foil which is a big improvement for ice retention!
You can almost certainly find these at any local charity shop, as well. Who cares if it's a little beat up, so long as it's clean and intact? Stop buying new plastic when you don't need to, the world is already too full of humanity's plastic pollution.
I Have the Kulkyne Swag and Stretcher. Best swag set up I ever owned. Check it out if you can. Also, theres bigger swags than what you have that you can move around better in
when you camp at a different spot every night because you are hitting trails.. and you don't have much interior space in your jeep.. theses are amazing. a hardshell can house your blankets, pillows, and your mattress... frees up a lot of space in your rig. the plastic bin holding all that with my setup takes up 30-50% of all my available space. And this is with me folding down my backseat.
I've had the same one for years. I tied an old bike inner tube around it to keep the lid tightly closed. Works great, and unlike a yeti, no one will ever want to steal it.
Great vid. Always thought they looked Hella cool but not Hella practical. No pt to them unless in lion country. And even then, lions climb really well.
A little tip us aussies use.. Set up your swag closer to your vehicle, less chance of being run over and if you are attacked in the night you've got something to climb under if needed.
I can Imagine that if there is no parking or car entrace to the beach or a campground you would be stuck in the parking lot instead of the beach. Thank for the video amigo.
Thanks for the review! I travel in my diy mini cargo camper van and just need to pack a tent for sites where a tent is required even though I have no plans to sleep in it! It’s going to be perfect for that purpose!
