What is the type of sword or saber that he is holding at the start of the video with the rippled guard? I've seen one before but it did not have a date or location of origin.
Please excuse me being tardy to the part- but having grown really intrigued by Langes Messers over this last year, this is highly appreciated. I’ve followed Oskar for a while on Instagram at this point, but man is he well suited to long-form content. I think I’m going to have to supplement my in-person meets with some lessons through his Virtual Fechtschule.
Hello the point who i want is hema arma union the knowledge of european fighting systems with olympic fencing and hand to hand systems and have our martial arts I dont underestimated other arts from Asia Africa etc but is time to learn our techniques for example Greece had Pankration Boxing Wrestling now knows Greco Roman wrestling and try the Pamachon so i wish one day everyone learn
Hema groups should get together and create an organization to set rules for medieval wrestling, just like how judo has the ioc committee to enforce certain techniques. This way Medieval wrestlers (Ringen) must keep their hands close to the body and no reaching for grabs. And no bending over too much or you get penalized for bad form and modern style technique.
No, all style of fencing fade away when guns become really popular, and now the hema guys use old books to revive what they can. There is no point to fight a war long time ended and for doing that we prefer the last civil war which allow us to hate each other endlessly.
Im a filipino that practices kali/filipino martial arts. I encountered Destreza when I was trying to get into sport fencing. Apparently, the Philippines being a spanish colony for 300 years, we have a fairly interesting connection with the spanish fencing arts; Destreza in particular. As I understand it, Destreza was meant to be a universal fighting theory, having the principles of rapier be transferrable to other weapons as well as unarmed fighting. We took this mindset and put it in our own martial arts! Which makes sense since there were masters of Destreza that lived in the Philippiness. History is amazing 😁
Spanish destreza is basically the break down of fighting into basic geometry: Straight lines at walking forwards/backwards and thrusting/jab punches/frontal kicks, combined with the circles of walking around your opponent and blade slashes/hook and uppercut punches/round kicks. Like you said, it's a universal fighting theory. It breaks down any fighting style into its most basic geometrical elements, that's why Spanish conquistadors were so successful in their worldwide conquest, no matter how exotic or unusual the fighting styles they'd encounter were, and why they were feared by every major warrior class in the world at the time (Even by the fabled Japanese styles after ronin faced the Tercios at the Battle of Cagayan in 1582) The British used to say that they wanted the Spaniards to come by sea rather than land to even stand a chance.
@@granudisimo conquistadors were not sucsesfful in world conquest because of destreza, it was becuase of the pikes, and tercio formation. In a line of formation your space is limited and you can't apply circular movement. Only 2 handed swords and shamshirs, were effective in formation combat, rather else ask the landskenechts or the ottomans. The Holy Roman empire was sucesfully carried through lines of pikes and bastard swords, and the turks did the same through milita men with rotella and saber mixed with lines of men with archebuses.
After revisiting this footage many, many times for training purposes, I have concluded that Matt and Scott’s reactions in the back are the best things about these videos.
There is nothing new under the sun, all the techniques I seen demonstrated in the videos and in the illustrations, I learned in freestyle wrestling and catch as catch can, they are the exact same, people just modify things slightly to make it work for them, but wrestling is old, and it has been passed down from generation to generation. If you want to learn the older style of wrestling with less rules which is more suited for combat, then try and learn catch as catch can wrestling.
LANCASHIRE CATCH WRESTLING : As a german, and non practioner(?) of any martial art, i think a lot of german martial art tradition ,died' for the reason of the 30 years war, 1618-1648, in which a third of the german population died, also in ,baroque' age wrestling was no more popular by nobility and gentry. I have read, that the last german treatise of wrestling had been from 1715. There are in Europe still some local wrestling styles. So in the eyes of a pure theorist like me, for selfdefense you should compare the different local styles also, to see, how good they are for this purpose.
One thing that might help is find a move that is 1). Effective, and 2) Unique to the medieval sources and then NAME it "The Medieval Throw" (or "Takedown") or "The Knight Throw". If it works then maybe it will find it's way into mainstream wrestling and grappling and bring more people to all the rest. Awesome video, Medieval wrestling looks like something that would be awesome to get into. It is also a cheaper way to get into HEMA, and therefore might draw people who might eventually buy longsword and such (as I hope to eventually) and get into all that.
Loved this one! It piqued my curiosity regarding the connections between Verdadera Destreza and the Bolognese school. I'd love to see a video like this one on the Bolognese system.
Great video! You guys, along with other translators and fencers like you, have really inspired me to follow this path and start translating all the works I can find from my particular favorite area of HEMA. Thanks for sharing this and keep up all the great work you are doing. Greetings from Spain!
Good God almighty, that was a REAL rapier bout! Not just a couple of longsworders trying to cosplay as Zorro, but an ACTUAL rapier bout between two highly trained individuals. BRILLIANT!
The Company Go-now makes perfect foam weapons for kids. There is also a nice version of sword Fighting for kids “Modern Sword Fighting” you can check this on my channel or on FB. It’s not HEMA but some great things can be taken from this version to use in HEMA teaching to kids and teens.
Thanks a lot Rob, for giving us this opportunity to open up about our concerns. It's a lot too rare to have an interviewer who's actually listening to what we say, and asking questions that help us to express what we want, instead of trying to push us in a direction they find interesting. Thanks for taking time to prepare this with us, and for making sure we could talk about everything we wanted in a safe and relaxed atmosphere. This "nice chat on interesting topic" atmosphere is what I perceive and love in the Alte Herren videos. I must say I wasn't disappointed with this experience, quite the contrary. :) I hope it can help women take on the instructor hat more easily, and help people around them understand they should encourage them to do so more actively. If it does, even a bit, it would be totally worth the hint of stress we felt from being in front of a camera.
Thanks Anne, for taking the time to articulate what your concerns in the way you wanted. I hope this helps and I look forward to filming a catch up in the future.
Hehe... femisnism is strong in that one :D ... realy, that promoter should get checked, before he melts away... On the other note, good part was those replies of HEMA instructors. Positive attitude! :)
Oh boy, so you are another of those brave internet warriors that cant take on sarcasm or joke and attack people just because of the difference of the oppinion? "Thats interesting." LoL. Talk about more of your kindergarden problems with all that world injustice, all the while adding your own part to the colecitve trash of that "pure-evil" agenda. "I am afraid of mensplaining?" RLY? LoL. Am I Only one, who thinks that Any men, that do say this with straight face should realy make himself a good deed and grow a pair? :D
Young active athletic healthy man in his 30's dies from the cold/sickness. I don't buy it. Dude was murdered. Most likely by a jealous courtier of the Duke. Maybe he rubbed someone the wrong way. Religious enemies? Who knows. He certainly didn't die from the cold lol
Lovely to see you're still making videos. I think it is great that there are more rare style tournaments going on. It would be neat to have a shield tournament. Like an event that has rotella, targa, buckler, scottish targe, kite shield etc
Maybe I need to drop by next year - I'm only a beginner, which holds even truer when it comes to rapier, but since the options to learn rapier are none existent (the only club that is somewhat nearby teaches longsword) so this might be a great chance to learn something from people who actually know what they talking about and not figuring it out by myself :D And lovely podcast as always - and lovely sparring footage!
I don't understand the rage against Novichenko that some guys have. Yes, he fights differently, but who are we to judge what's "right"? At the same time people love parry-riposte exchanges with longsword, when by the treatises you should act "indes". I mean, a lot of the things we do in bouts are not exactly from the sources. So it seems to me that people don't like Novichenko not because he doesn't fight historically, but because he fights differently than what they are used to see now. So being angry because of that is really stupid.
Ondřej H I agree. Novichenko gets called out for suicidal fencing a lot, but in the elims (not including the final) he actually had around the same, if not less, doubles than most traditional fighters. He placed pretty high (3rd) after the pool fights, which accounted hits given/received ratio. I have no problem with Novichenko’s style, it’s just that imo some of hits by him that were pretty light were called too early by the judges. The open disdain by some was uncalled for.
He is a Tricky Fighter, favor in using trick rather than technique. It may make some viewerv see him as "strange, dishonorable and aggressive" but im ok with that.Combat is a field with variety of way to fight. You may see him perform a slide cut, reverse grip thrust, spinning, jumping, extend lunge and block from behind.
@@thestuffmonster9856 Fencing is when two ugly badass decide to butcher each other using long knifes. One will survive, the other will die. Here in Russia when this all started 20 years ago all our fencers considered taking minor damage while killing enemy to be a good result.
Same type of big mouths that hated on Fiore. If it was the medieval ages they would challenge Ivan to a sharp fight and get their asses handed to them.
I will not disclose my source on this(Because they wouldn't want me to) but part of the reason why John Clements kicked at least 1 person out is because they wouldn't have a threesome with him and his wife...I'm dead serious.
