Question. If I already have omnirig, HDSDR and Log4OM loaded, then it appears that wsjt-x can no run concurrently because uses Hamlib. When I test the rig control it yields a Hamlib error. Further, if I start by running swjt-x, unload it and then try to run the usual omnirig stuff, the ports don't work unless I reboot. Hmmmm.
In this video you are running what I assume is omnirig v1.x with HDSDR. Sadly omnirig v1.x support was removed with HDSDR v2.8 - a real pain... I am not sure how stable the current HDSDR beta, which once again allows omnirig v.1x, is at this point. This is significant since you can not run LOG4OM with omnirig 2. Oh the joys of battling developers...
Could you do another video about the "bonded test"? The "common bonding adapter"? Anytime I ask in the stores about grounding they said it wasn't necessary at all so I would love to have more information for someone who actually knows about this. Can you not only discuss the testing but the adapter itself and how to use it? Thank you so much for this video It really was exceptionally helpful for me. 🙌
we had a couple guys that are the FT8 freaks bail last minute on our FD. I found your video here and after watching it a half dozen times I have N1MM working with WSJT-X on my Yaesu 991 gobox. Absolutely incredible video Stu. thanks a bunch! KC5LL
Great job! I use my win10 PC for all sorts of serial stuff. Arduino, Raspberry Pi, CHIRP, etc. After watching this video I marked my case with the COM port numbers. 😂I'm an old school guy anyway, so I have to write down everything. 73's WD8OHE.
Love the way you introduced the video visually and audibly, but I was disappointed when I got to the point when i realised it involved running Linux command lines. Need something simpler. Julia
Hi Julia, Admittedly, the use of the System Rescue CD can be a bit of a steep learning curb. That said, it offers a full solution to many issues that real world windows techs run into everyday. There may be solutions that might give you a nice point and click interface, but I've never seen one that is free... The System Rescue CD is free, and following the instructions step by step will lead you to a successful result a high majority of the time. Most end users will never run into this in a lifetime, and many service professionals may only see it once in a decade. A free solution seems the best fit. At least that's my opinion, Stu AG6AG
That's unnecessarily complex. Will just run F.D. from WSJT-X and use their log instead of N1MM's log. Using Grid Tracker makes for a nice map that catches the public's eye.
Hi Richard, In our case, we run 15 or so stations and want real time consolidation of the Field Day log. This solution does that. But you certainly can just take the log out of WSJTx and make your entries that way. Stu AG6AG
At around 14:30 you might say that YOU WILL NOT see the drivers UNLESS you connect your pc to the radio. THEY WILL REMAIN HIDDEN. This one drove me nuts. I'd download the drivers, install then, and then look for them... THEY WOULD NOT SHOW. You must connect the computer to the radio.
Hi Stu Love the video, GReat information. The question I have is not about VARA, but about your video production. I was wonder how you captured your desktop and you were working and used it as your backdrop? Im familiar with how green screen works and that side of it but was wondering what software you used for screen capture and so on. Thanks
Hi Chris, I use OBS studio for the majority of the uncut production recording. Many times I am also capturing a full screen of a VM running on HyperV. If I need to actually access ports and other things to illustrate identifying and configuring devices and I don't want to mess with settings that work on my main system, I spin up a old laptop with NDI pumping the video out to OBS. And then I do all final editing in Open Shot. And yes, it's all free software (other then the Window Pro licenses). Hope that helps! Stu AG6AG
@@AG6AG I use a program that is similar to OBS called EVMUX. But capturing my screen I’m still trying to figure out. Evmux does allow shared screens. Which I think is how i have to do it. Thank you
Hi, Every antenna you have is "sized" for the frequency of interest you are working with. If the antenna isn't setup correctly for the frequency you are trying to use, your transmitting signal and reception will be sub standard. We are actually only dealing with a receiver when using the SDR, but properly matching the antenna to a 50 ohm impedance at the frequency of interest vastly improves our reception. If you are really interested in the science, try this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1nmbmxdI3zo.htmlsi=lcSzS2N5jRYm82sE Stu AG6AG
TOTALLY frustrated with Log4OM. Not a single video or ANY Documentation on how to set Log4OM for "ARRL Field DAY". Perhaps it can't. I see no facility for entering "Class or Section". Amazing, for an otherwise good Logger. You'd think there would be at least a way to build your own template. Too bad.
Hi Wirewizard, Yeah, Log4OM is a great daily logger with amazing auto import and export capabilities... It kicks butt on getting all the info you could ever want for a QSO. That said, it falls short with contest logging. My use N1MM+ for all the contests I participate in and have great results. I strongly recommend it for Field Day. I have a few videos on it at well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J5Yzw3I3LZc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rGiBos2Y85o.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wcw5VAIvH_w.html There are a few more but this should get you going for field day. Hope this helps! Stu AG6AG
Thinking of picking one of these up for scanning purposes but I'm worried it won't be able to pick up my local MARCs/trunking p25 systems. Would you happen to know how well it would handle those frequencies?
I did the exact same thing as you except with a RG-8x wrapped 43 toroid (total cost $20) vs the MFJ-915 RF isolator (retail $55) the best I could get was -18 db on the MFJ but the toroid was around -28. The difference of wrapping a toroid vs cramming as many ferrite beads into a PVC pipe.
Hello Siddharth, Aliases are like tactical calls. They can be programmed into settings and allow you to use them as a from address as well as receive email sent to them. An example of how we use them for our RACES/ARES group is to identify the Emergency Operation Station (EOC) as an account to send messages to, rather then addressing the message to the callsign that is assigned to the client. This allows us to use a club call for the Winlink account for these stations. The thing you have to remember is that to connect to a individual station you need to tell the P2P comm screen that you want to connect to the actual callsign. Hope that clears it up a bit more... Viewed several video guides on how to get in after forgetting password, this was the best. My PC was weird -- I had to use SDB4, not SDA2. It worked -- much appreciated!
Thanks for the real life experience alot of newbies to the hobby go thru , I have been exactly in that scenario. I also tried the recommendation in comments (techjohn3379) the 7/8 mini pipe cutter also works. got the idea from this site. Good vid and good comments.
I wish you would take another look at this subject with the new FT 710,,,,the menus and subject descriptors, just don't line up with my radio....which will soon overtake the 7300....could be a lot of views ( and gratitude), for you ! PS Far more interested in capturing audio off HF into my PC and playing it back to them via the USB cable ....( How to PTT that audio playback is the problem )
Been doing this and file recovery on customer’s computers for a while now using System Rescue and randomly got recommended this video. Wanted to comment to say that this is one of the best tutorials for this scenario I’ve seen! Clear explanation, clear description and you have a way of conveying this information in a non-condescending tone (unlike some Linux gurus). Liked and subbed! Keep up the good work sir!
Thanks for the video. I never heard of Win4 until watching this video. After searching it, looks like that is what I need plus a lot more. I want to be able to run SKCC Logger and AC Logger simultaneously. 73 AI4ES
There is really nothing "automatic" about manually uploading to LOTW from the QSO manager. I shouldn't have to go there and sort through what QSOs need to be uploaded. I seldom exit LOG4OM, but when I try the "Automatic upload on application close" option, the program freezes and the upload never occurs.
Hi Stuart Thanks for VARA vids. I am new to it and have a question based on the current version. How do I set up the additional monitor screen as my Rig set up doesn’t let me do it. Thanks G7JDI
Hi Dennis, If I understand your question, you want to have more then one Vara monitor screen on a different frequency? I don't think that is possible, as your tuner for your radio in SSB mode is only 3k wide. Let me know if I understood your question. Stu AG6AG
I just watched your video and it helped a lot BUTTTT not sure if I did it exactly right.. On my log I got one star on my log so I guess someone confirmed me , but I am not sure if I confirmed all the contacts in my log..BTW I only have about 28 . Is there a way to check, I find this thing very confusing ....
Hi Steve, You should log into the LoTW website and click on the "Your QSO's" menu item. You should be presented with a search screen. Fill out what you want to look for and submit it. Remember: QSOs are not confirmed and QSLs are. Hope that answers your question! Stu AG6AG
@@AG6AG Thanks for getting back to me Stu , so I will not know if I did it right unless I get conformation from the other person.. I think I did it right , but do not have any stars in my log
Hi Steve, So, If you are trying to bring the data back into your logging program you will need to do downloads from LoTW and import the downloads back into your log program... That make sense? Stu AG6AG
I got the DX Engineering coax cutting tool and their PL-259 connectors. I STILL have trouble trying to do trouble-free coax connections on LMR 400. I'm new to HF (started about three months ago) so maybe I just need more practice. That's why I always leave 5-6 extra feet for any coax project . . .
Hi Tommy, LMR400 is a real pain to work with... I find myself creating a 3ft circle with the coax coming up in the center. I then use my utility knife to walk around the circle while stripping it... It's quite the show. *LAUGH* Using the UHF terminal as a guide to where to strip the coax really helps me get the thing on right. Stu AG6AG
Stu, thank you once again for this informative video. This was the only video I can find on RU-vid about the color codes in WSJTX for FT8. I think I already know the answer but in order for this to work I need to always let the log continue to build and never delete it or rename it such that it starts with a new log? I saw advice from another RU-vid ham about renaming the log file after each setting so you have a separate ADIF file I think that would defeat the color coding though. I think his rationale was for the purpose of parks on the air. Do you have any suggestions on how to parcel out the log to reflect a single activation?
If you move the log and start a new one, the colors go away... There really isn't an easy way to strip out just an individual group of QSOs. You could move the log files out of the way, do the contest or activation and then put your daily log back, but those new contacts will not be in the log for color assignment. Stu AG6AG
Did you ever check out the protable version? I am trying to run log4om on my desktop and protable on my laptop for POTA. Need to have both computers be synced with little or no fuss. Any ideas on how to do this? You would think the program would have that option already for those who partake in field days and POTAs.
The Portable Version does work as promised. You can use it off a USB thumb drive and move it with you on whatever device you are using... I tend to do it a bit differently when I operate in the field. I have a separate Log4OM-2 install on my laptop and when I'm done in the field, I just export the QSOs that I made to an ADIF file (with extended fields) and then import it into my shack computer. Remember, keep these logs backed up! Stu AG6AG
Yes, under the tools menu open the QSL manager. Put in the search criteria you are wanting to change. Click the update box and enter what you want to change globally. Stu AG6AG
Hi, Stu. Do you have a video explaining how to edit the macros for a specific contest - in my case, the BARTG HF RTTY contest. In there, the exchange includes a 4-character (not 6) UTC/GMT time. When I enter "TIMEGMT" in the brackets for the "EXCH", and run it, it does a 6-character time (xx:xx:xx), not 4 (xx:xx). I was able to get the "599" to display correctly, but not the time. I was also able to get the Message number to display correctly, with the "#". What do I put between the "EXCH" brackets for the time? The exchange for this contest is: RST MESSAGE NUMBER: The number must be a three or four figure number starting at 001 and incrementing by one (1) per contact TIME UTC (GMT): A full four figure UTC (GMT) time must be sent as part of the exchange
Hi Mike, I think what you are looking for is {TIME2}. I do not have a video on the macros as of yet. It would probably be a long and boring one... :). My main reference for F-keys and Macros is: n1mmwp.hamdocs.com/setup/function-keys/#macros It contains everything you ever wanted to know. You might want to glance at the {EXCH} variable as well. Of course you can't edit much in the contest setup. Hope that helps! Stu AG6AG
Hey Stuart. Thanks for video. All work but i have a problem in N1MM. What are the settings in H1MM or WSJT-X to display the decoded signals in the N1MM -"WSJT -X Decode-list" window? 73, de LZ1INP
