Good Juice is your guide to all things whisky from Glasgow, Scotland. From tasting tips to history and education, all I aim to do is share my learning journey with you. I'm not much of a guy for formality, and really prefer a more direct approach to the channel.
Please check out my other work on Instagram. I look forward to seeing you in the comments!
I would put Oban 14 up the top, followed by Lagavulin 16 followed by Bunnahabhain Eirigh NA Greine followed by Port Charlotte followed by Bowmore 18 then Kilchoman, the Laphroig PX. I havent tried Ledaig or Benraich so may adjust after trying. From a value for money whisky for me it has to be Deanston 12 & Clynelish 14 (yes I know they aren’t Islay)
Ardbeg Wee Beatie was smoky/peaty BUT raw and hot when drinking. I'm happy to have experienced it but I much more prefer Port Charlotte 10 and even Famous Grouse Smoky Black.
It's a good cask driven whisky that absolutely hides the distillate behind the over the top wine casks. I like it for what it is, but nothing amazing here.
Really disappointed I missed this live, fascinating stuff and something that needed to be done on English Whisky! As for the G.I., Vin makes a great point on the fact that whether its Non Chillfiltered or Natural Colour, that information should be made compulsory for all English Whisky products, while you've still got the chance to do so with the G.I. and the regs for English Whisky. The fact that Diageo is now heavily involved in at least one English Distillery, makes me think that this will not be on the agenda now. Which is hugely disappointing for me, and a big opportunity missed, with a chance to offer a point of difference to Scotch and Irish.
What a fantastic rountable, gutted that I missed this! Fantastic hosting Ben, cheers mate and brilliant conversation. Rob is from the industry but he feels like one of us, in the game for the love of it. You can feel the passion from him and this was a joy to watch. Cheers fellas 🥃
Missed this live - dont know why. Cotswolds Distillery is fairly local to me - ive visited at least 3 times - great cafe as well as brilliant tours (the founders tour with Dan is amazing). The whisky they produce is simply fabulous.
Sorry missed this (Menno & I were live at the same time on my channel, we had no idea about it) but will watch the replay asap as I love some English whisky (Cotswolds & Spirit of Yorkshire being my favorite so far), though we can find barely only 4 different distilleries products here in France, Cheers !
Loved this live! Speaking of Independent, I found Cotswolds via SMWS and went out and purchased Founders, Sherry and Peat OB - I really love the brand. Hunting for Bourbon aged and a backup for Founders.
Really interesting to hear the thoughts on Cotswolds being in supermarkets and the cons associated with it as it's been great for me to be able to grab a bottle off the shelf in Belfast from Sainsbury's but it has given the company great exposure in my market. I've been through several bottles of the signature and enjoyed all of them.
Sorry: Greg & Menno 'did a bit of a Roy' (!), so it took me a while to get back here and watch this. I had a quick look at my spreadsheets and I've got 37 English bottles at the moment, including 2 Cotswolds (plus I've still got some left in their younger-than-whisky taster pack), 5 from Adnams (although one is a whisky-adjacent eau de vie de bière) and 3 Oxford ryes.
Did you know Chivas' website for creating your own blend no longer exists? And for some reason if you email their customer support saying that they now send out a link to this video... Mateeee wtf are this company doing? I have no idea how to blend whiskey and my partner bought me this as a gift, she isn't happy I haven't touched it yet 😂
I love whisky!!! Scotch Whisky is a drink that can be described as bold, strong, and fiery, although it can also be smooth, almost sweet, and a drink of depth and contrast - just like Scotland itself!
Bowmore 12 Ardbeg 10 Laphroaig Quarter Cask Caol Ila 12 Talisker 10 Talisker Dark Storm Ardbeg Uigedall Paul John Peated Lagavulin 16 (doing stupid things with it's pricing ove r the last few years.) Laphroaig 18 (if u see one buy it) Johnny Walker Green Johnny Walker Green Island Talisker DE (though this changes in nuance every release) Port Charlotte 10yo Heavily Peated Ardnamuechan Cask Strength
I'm a big bourbon guy from the US and I just grabbed a bottle of this from a shop when visiting Edinburgh. Picked it after a tasting of 5 different glasses.
Hey Ben! I heard you talk about this video on Vin’s live, so I thought I would check it out. Very well done! It’s super interesting how they have the distillery set up. How cool to make the cuts yourself! If you ever feel like putting part 2 together, I would love to see their warehouse and kiln. Cheers!
Fantastic video, really informative and explained well from Fredrick… along with your awesome videography. Makes it a great watch. Would love a part 2 sometime 👍
Ben you are a good commentator and I am sure you will be good in whatever your aiming to do! Keep that powerful energy. Yes you are a good teacher! I was always a pleasure to see your reviews. Cheers
I get almost no smoke from Laphroaig, mostly a hint of new tires, old Bakelite phone washed up on a dirty beach with a tiny hint of Mercurochrome dipped licorice and a faint electrical fire way off in the distance. So far my foray into peat has lead me to loving it in this order: Lagavulin 8 > Ardbeg An Oa > Talisker 10/Bowmore 12 (not enough time with either to decide which is better) > Laphroaig 10 Still a lot of peat I haven't tried, so I'm looking forward to the journey. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I am a Fall Risk too LOL
No starch is converted into maltose sugar until the enzymes are activated in the mash. Smokey phenols can be produced during a fermentation that gets too hot. This, however, is seen as a flaw.
