Wow this a blast from the past was there November 1973 with the air refueling 55sqd ferriing fighter squadron on to Singapore we had bunk down in tents what a shite detachment 😮
BBC, PYE TVT , SSF,TAYLOR WOODROW ,then the shit hit the fan back in Salalah,,In came the SAS ,, 5 star holidays now i didnt recognise the place in 2021
Brilliant video, thanks. I was there 74-75 in GEF. Great posting tbh. Driving the train to the sailing club was something else. The whole camp coming down with something akin to norovirus was another memory! Xmas 74 and the best themed block competition, remember that? So many memories: MMG Club (Grace and Dorothy); Buff Lodge; CH Saloon; Kimji Ramdas 'supermarket' out in the bondhu. As Gozome time approached, "We Gotta Get Outa This Place" played frequently on Radio 65.
I was in Masirah April-December 1974 and spent most of my time in Radio 65. Still have fond (if very distant) memories of the radio. I worked in Supply. Great seeing the movie. If memory serves me correctly, didn't that goat used to chase you?
Thanks for the upload. I've noticed a few guys were there the same time as my father. Does anyone remember Corporal Raymond Hall? He was there as an engineer.
Hi Malcolm, great video, I've only just seen it and it brought back lots of memories and I even recognized you walking along the beach. I was there from Aug 73 to May 74. Not sure if you remember me, we used to hang out and even spent a week together, with friends in Cyprus. I even have a photo of you, me and Mick (surname escapes me) on my gozomie day. Hope you'e in good health and thanks for the memories.
Just picked up your comment 3 years too late, sorry. Yes I do remember you and our trip to Cyprus, didn’t we stay with a Warrant Officer and his family? I to have a photo of us sat outside their home. Happy to share a copy with you. I am in good health thanks, hope you are keeping well.
I was there 1971-72. Nobody mentions what a S..t hole it was, bloody donkeys everywhere, getting shot at from the hills, freezing night time temperatures, showering in seawater, idiots from MPBW putting seawater in the drinking water at the desalination plant. Constructing cattle grids to keep out the donkeys and putting the rails in line with the road resulting in a pile of Honda 50s at the side of the road as their front wheels went in resulting in a queue of injured locals at sick quarters. The donkeys taking all of 2 hours to work out that they could get through the fence wires by standing on the bottom one and pushing under the middle strand. Man eating Camels in the mating season. Just to mention a few
Tony Hancock, Hi guys i saw this a couple of days ago could not believe it, i designed and organised the building of the fish pond with my (top cat) section mates in sewell block (crack up crescent) , this vid shows the pond in construction, did two tours of masirah Feb to Nov 73, worked in the Airman's mess, and again in May to Nov 74/75 worked in In-Flight Catering
Was there 74 - looked after Justice (the horse) and Donks his temperamental (mostly Mental) stablemate most of my time there as well as being Radio Op on the Desert Rescue Team.
just seen film took me back to june 72 chocolate milk tins filled with hydraulic fluid and bed feet placed in them to try and stop bed bugs..... it didn't.
There's certainly some memories here - posted to Systems Control 72/73 - met Mike McCann out there and we formed 'Fusions' - a live 'Rock & Roll' band - played regularly in the Crazy H / Corporals Club etc. Mike and I actually met in the Radio 65 shack as we did a bit of DJing and we played our very first live gig with Mike on Drums in one booth and me on an acoustic guitar in the other advertising for a bassist and a singer to come join us.
I was on Masirah Dec 73-Sep 74. 276 Signals Unit. I may be getting older, but I can still remember Al Uney, Taff Williams, Geoge Clough, Jock Reap, Chris Towle, Doug Hall, Mark Ryan, Neil Smith. I wonder how many of you remember the Masirah Wobbly, the radio net we had with the Army guys based at Midway camp.
Funny thing, nostalgia; I served 2 detachments & a full tour (13 months in total, I did a 'cook's tour' of 9) on this island & hated every minute of it. But looking at this video 40+ years later makes me think, 'it wasn't all bad' - maybe it is because I am losing my marbles.........
Masirah, Holiday destination to die for, 66 to 67, changed a bit now, i remember diving off the sunbathing platform into the pool, silly boy, yes boy, only 20 now 67, i survived and have a pic to prove it. Great times and happy memories.
Here in 1974. I was a flight eng. on 70 sqdn. Hercules based in Akrotiri. came here almost every week for 8 months. Remember the illicit porn films and the great fishing.
Charles Toshney here, I was posted to Masirah July 74 'till March '75. Was a TPO in Commcen 'C' watch.' Did a stint as a presenter on Radio Six Five, did a programme called 'Popcorn'. Regularly did the station 'closing for the day' session at end of days broadcasting. Great fun, made the 9 months pass easier
charlie carruthers here teleg at the commcen. posting 1972 to 1973 and had on Radio65 a prog called Celtic Mixture monday nites 8 to 9pm. Tony Read was my Irish help and I was a piper with RAF Leuchars P & D and Seletar too and later after demob TA BlackWatch Pipes and drums 51 Highland Vols CU CCC
I was there Nov '62 to Nov '63. I hardly recognise the luxury palace Masirah has become! No pool, no paved roads, some Twynham huts but many of the older buildings with curved roof - as I said, no luxury! Aircraft were the Argosy, Beverley, DC3, the occasional York(!) and, of course Pembrokes and the locust control aircraft. Shower wanted? Yes, but sand-blasted both ways from billet to shower and back!
Just missed you John as I rotated out in Apr.'73. I see from a comment on Servicepals webisite that we had a mutual mate - Eric Cracknell. We did our Telep Op training together at Cosford and were both posted to Rudloe Manor together in '69. He was a genuine bloke. So sad to hear that he is no longer with us.
Just catching up on these comments. I started the RAF Masirah Remembered website in 2009. I'm in touch with Hamdi bin Humaid bin Ali Al Wahaibi through Facebook. You might like the website, it's at raf-masirah.weebly.com Shukran Jazilan David (Dawood) Rose
I was in Ops/Flight watch from Aug 73 - May 74. Lots asking about John Boyd - didn't meet him there but was at Midland Radar with him and later at Wittering in 1988 is. He was a civvy working on BCU and his wife was the tower Admin Sgt. Alan Marr

I think I was there 73/74 in commcen Masirah, ciggie ciggie ciggie what a football team, great banter, great guys, an experience you only live once, sport, nomadic tribes, history, best left in the past, jene reget, it was great to get home, to all those that I met a great story shared. I am now on the Isle of Wight another island story. Didn't know about the reunion, maybe next time I was know as HF,
Great upload I visited there several times from RAF Sharjah in 1970 with the Dental team. My most vivid memory was watching a Medic give a Camel a penicillin injection for an infected hoof, it shit all over the place including him! lol.
Beautiful film! Returned for holiday(trip down memory lane) in 2005 with my teenage son. Wonderful hospitality from locals; especially after I'd shown pics of lots of them when they were kids! Taken on a tour by the Omani Stn. Cdr. and though so much has changed there's a lot that hasn't. I worked ATC 72/3 and I swear it's exactly the same as when I left- right down to the dynotape labels on the equipment! I have some vid which I'll sort out and post.
I was there in 1976 at the medical centre. My nine months got extended to April 1977 for the handover to SOAF. Also remember hacking the point and 5 a side football. I was lucky enough to be the station hygienist (env health) and got to drive right round the island regularly treating wells and water storage to prevent mosquitos/malaria. Had a lot of ‘friends’ who joined me to get off the camp!
Brilliant video that brought the memories flooding back. I worked in GRSF in the Tower, October 1971 till July 1972. I also lived in the block right next to sewer ejector NUMBER 5 - phew-what a smell!
Hello - my friends in stores worked with a young man called Salim Ali - he spoke very good English and went to work in the station headquarters building - met him only once in 1972
Was there in 72 in the Commcen - remember the pond, the sewage ejector was just outside!! Lived in a Twyneham for a while before graduating to a much hotter Sewell Block (no bedbugs there!!) Listened to the Doors every night at the |Naafi, had a job cleaning the cinema paid £2 but you got free entry - saved me a fortune. Came home with £400 stuffed in my boots. Highlight of the tour were the bondu bashes, sleeping under the stars - have a hankering to go back. Thanks for the great film
