Seriously though, I'm just a basic dude, average player, trying to sound better. I like to demo new stuff and I am learning the video stuff as I go. I've had no formal training on how to "RU-vid" so Subscribe to my channel, watch it grow and take part in the conversation. I have a cool chair called the Tone Throne, and my rug really ties the room together. Cheers!
I love the Burstbuckers but it depends on the guitar. I have a ES-339 and put 57’s n they sound great for that guitar. For a solid body like your LP the Burstbuckers Kick Ass!
Nice comparations and playing in all your videos. In this comparation I heard more difference in the bridge position than the neck position. and 57 VS BB (other video), not much different . I mean there are some frequencies or small details, but at least for me not worth the swap from one to another, (may be just for fun)you can compensate with the Eq/gain of the amp or just adjusting height of the pick up.
G Custombucker (AlNiCo III) Neck PU with G Burstbucker Pro (AlNiCo V) Bridge PU. Thank you very much indeed, Sir. Wonderful video & such an elegant playing !
You and Mike Nix must havr gotten your sets of these at almost the same time! Great demo's from both of you as expected! These PAF's rings ght out of the gate have superb xlarity snd chime and what I call the missing link "note bloom"! I hope David will offer a set of P90's volume with similar tone qualities! Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video! Mac
Whenever I judge any PAF of recent, the biggest thing I look for is how the pickup not only senses and tracks the strings, but “hears” the sum of the whole guitar as well as listens to the reflection of the speaker and re introducing it back through room reflection into the pickups and back into the amp. Those sweet violin interactions are what I really look for. Any PAF has to have the notes bloom and have this blue note of air surrounding it and hear the amp and room not just the strings…. This is the mark of the best PAF you will ever play
Please pair this against the Fralin Pure PAFs. People were giving other pickups the edge against the Fralins but I have to say that they sound immense in person so gauging them against this set would be very interesting.
@@VisualGuythe Sheps are immense but I’m partial to Fralin cause I’m close to Richmond. Fralin and his crew love to talk shop. Nuances of boutique pickup sounds can’t top the experience of talking to the guy winding your handmade pickup down the road from you.
Honestly the neck humbucker kinda reminded me of an alnico 5 cause of its brightness and chime (for a neck pickup), but the bridge sounded much thicker than the alnico v i have (I use the t-type pickups in my bridge). I love alnico v in the bridge but find adjusting knobs on alnico 2s much more versatile. 5s are a punch in the face while 2s are a beast you can tame with a few turns.
@@VisualGuy Oh i didn't notice that, you asked that i thought that, someone else was asking and i just check out the site information😅 Little tired after work 😎 Bridge sounds more like alnico 2 but neck little like alnico 5 like zaccarter said. I have Monty's PAF set on my les paul and that ended my PAF journey.
Lollar's are so good. These are both what you want. A classic smokey vintage tone in the lows and a biting more Angus Young, hard rockin tone in the standards. Um, both.
Everyone commenting that the SD ‘59 are brighter need to realize real paf pickups were bright. The ‘59’s sound more like real paf’s than the 57 classics.
I tend to go for Alnico 5 humbuckers, but in this case, the Antiquities sound better with your guitar and amp set up. Sounds like the amp is dialled in for the antiquities which makes the 59s sound a bit mergggh 🤷♂️
Or you can support a cool, genuine builder who served his country proudly and built many hand made pedals off a Royal Navy Ship as a passion project that turned into a business because of his talent and personality. My demo is probably bland and boring, but your minimization of the brand and ignorance of its owner and his inspirations holds less value here.
I Appreciate you spending enough time demoing the lower gains settings ... That's what I like to hear, but most demos of OD pedals spend too much time on the high gain sounds - Thanks!
I find the subject of PICKUP tone comparison to be a fascinating conversation, even though it’s not far off a dog chasing his on tail. LOL. The hard cold truth is, every single comparison like this only shows the tonal differences between the various pickups, in the same guitar, through the same exact signal chain, and specific amp. Of course the same guitar using one set of pickups will sound different … in some cases, dramatically different, from one amp to another. So, the real quest isn’t to determine which pickup sounds better than another, because there are too many other variables to consider. One pickup might sound much better paired with a certain amp, while performing worse with another amp. The value of these types of comparisons is a starting point, not the end game. This simply identifies fundamental characteristics of a given set of pickups, which maybe useful in deciding which set might pair better with a person’s unique situation. Maybe your rig is a plexi … or maybe it’s a Twin, or one of the other hundred different possibilities? Hahaha. Seriously guys, if your amp has a brighter voicing, then a P.A.F. with a brighter output might produce some less than sweet results, and would probably not be the ideal choice, compared to a P.A.F. with warmer output, that might offer needed balance. Then, of course, there is always the tone knob on the guitar, one or more on the amp, and generally one on every pedal someone puts on their board. Maybe that’s why Throwbak offers 15 different models of P.A.F. humbuckers, while across the industry, there are at least 100 options?
The Pro's are too bright. It takes away from how open and dynamic the 1 and 2's are. The Pros sound less melodic, they don't sing as much especially at the end with the overdriven tone. The 1 and 2's just sound more articulate and better overall to me
Bought an old husk of a '66 SG Special. I am in the process of bringing her back to life, I have done so much research on this wiring harness, was going to go Emerson, but heard they are fake bumblebee caps.. Going to go with the RS, they seem to edge out the Emerson in the comments sections and review pages. Your video helped me greatly. Getting the RS SG P90 wiring kit with the gold hardware upgrade, any other advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated..
Sounds a bit similar to my '66 Ampeg Gemini I in terms of tube compliment. Less top end due to the tone stack design and the benefit of Dr. Z's excellent master volume design. I'm intrigued...
Jacob, thank you so much for including the LPD Cascade reverb in this Dr Z demo. It’s a great compliment to this killer amp and you set it perfectly IMO. Sounds like a sweet room to me 🙌
Thanks, Evan. The Octal Six sounds and feels "intentionally vintage" if that makes any sense at all. All the features really have a good, useful purpose. You'd probably really love it!
Gotta say this thing sounds very unique compared to Dr Z’s other offerings. Definitely got that Tweed thing going on but almost seems to me like it’s just a bit more “hi-fi”. If I were so lucky, I believe this one would be my pick.
