I was gonna msg u on mrktplc that U've seen the govs on eBay for 100+. I wooda just kept it 4 a spare parts unit. U coulda tried takin it 2 CAMA but now? U ever get the L (or C) with no oil psi figured out? btw congrats on 999!
Congratulations on # 999! I can’t wait to see # 1,000. You might as well fix and keep it in the collection. I’m going to guess that since it’s yours, probably fresh gas, clean the points and plug. Maybe a plug wire?
I say try and fix it and worst case sell it / give it away. Would be a shame to scrap such a nice and complete tractor! Especially an earlier one like that!
Wish I could find a model L for $25, I paid $500 for my 56 and 60 model L's and my 56 is just as rusty but has the gear reduction hubs so that's a plus. Be cool to see it fixed up and running !!!
don't scrap it take to a high school shop class for them to learn, a shop teacher should let you give a class on gravelys it would make a good vidio too.
I have this same model and the motor looks the same but a pulley with a width the same as on the lathe. It also has a Dayton brand direction controller that some how hooks to the motor or lathe. The lathe and motor are mounted on butcher block. Unfortunately I don't know how to use the lathe. It sits on a shelf and unable to move it till I get some help and so can't see the make of the motor.
Unfortunately, the coil cost about $175. It’s not worth it to do it. I have two of them that the coils blew on. I ended up throwing them in the garbage. It wasn’t worth the investment to fix them..
Good lord that brings back memories! I grew up with that man killer of a mower. Ours was a '66 or '67 I think. Yeah, we added a coil too. The hitch on this one looks factory as far as I know. It's a dependable machine if nothing else. My old man bought every accessory, including a plow & chains for the Winter, a cart with tailgate and dumping mechanism, a grass sweeper, an aerator, a wheeled sulky to sit on, and a three blade mower deck. I remember my neighbor borrowed it once because he was considering buying one. He said it was an absolute man killer. Hated it. I was extremely lucky because we inherited my grandfather's wheel Horse when I was about 13y/o, also a sixties model, but with an actual steering wheel and no kidding- an automatic transmission. I actually looked forward to cutting the grass with that machine. It even had a cigarette lighter. The Wheel Horse came with a bunch of accessories too, including a grass sweeper, a plow and chains, another dumping utility cart, and obviously, a mower deck. Gravely def built a machine that was tough as hell, and would last forever if you kept the fittings well greased and changed the oil. They're good brush mowers too. But I wouldn't wish that old commercial 10 on my worst enemy. It also wasn't the safest mower in the world. In fact, it had very minimal safety features. If you fell off the sulky, there was no kill switch or braking mechanism. And falling off was a distinct possibility when cutting under thorny bushes or small trees. The mower deck needed to have a cover on the side so you could collect cuttings in a tow-behind sweeper. Plus, once you've done the maintenance once, it's pretty easy if you keep up with it. Honestly though, I would NEVER let my 10 year old kid cut the grass with that thing. It's an accident waiting to happen! Times certainly have changed!
I have an old giant mower and am trying to figure out how to raise the cutting height. The front is easy but the rear is a problem. I loosened the two bolts at the rear of the deck, but it sits tight. Suggestions?
DEESTONE makes the rear tires for my 1984 8199-KT tractor with the same tread pattern that originally came with the mower made by Armstrong in the good old USA.
I have some rear tires that are Deestones on my 8163-B they have sat outside for over 10 years. They are just starting to crack. They have actually done very well for me. Thanks for watching
Dear rw3dog, I've got a Gravly 8163 and the 16 HP BStrat engine broke. I installed a predator 660 motor. Everything fits and the mower deck works but the hydraulics will not engage. I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer. I did rebuild the BStrat however I like the P660. How do I activate the Hydraulics? Please help. (Mike)
The hydraulic system can be tricky to figure out. The first step is to make sure the reservoir under the hood is full. The next step is to make sure that the hydraulic pump is actually turning. There’s a gear inside the transmission that drives the hydraulic pump. I have some videos of my 20G diagnosing that gear. I have a lot of videos on my 8163-B fixing hydraulic issues with the pump.
Make sure there isn't a mouse house in that engine. Since it was mainly used in the winter, you may not have noticed it previously. Now that you are using it in warm weather, it could be overheating a bit.
Every time I watch your vids, I wonder "should I restore my tractors or just get them running and use them?" I have had my IH Cub Cadet 107 apart for restoration since 2000! I might take your lead and just get them running so I can use them!
my MS 250 won’t start up after I left it sitting in barn during winter! I emptied the fuel tank and let the carburetor dry out. Is this related to your issue? If so what’s part number you replaced?
I just picked up a 812 and 816 knowing nothing about gravelys other than they’re built like tanks. Your videos are awesome and will definitely help me get them going
Hey Ralph, Chris here and I've been watching your channel for a while now, and I'm curious to know how many tractors you have in total, including Gravely and parts tractors along with the few others you have? And old Gravelys that you might be willing to part with.
