The contest is a celebration of the ingenuity and creativity of the world's premier visual illusion research community. Visual illusions are those perceptual experiences that do not match the physical reality. Our perception of the outside world is generated indirectly by brain mechanisms, and so all visual perception is illusory to some extent. The study of visual illusions is therefore of critical importance to the understanding of the basic mechanisms of sensory perception, as well as to cure many diseases of the visual system. The visual illusion community includes visual scientists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, and visual artists that use a variety of methods to help discover the neural underpinnings of visual illusory perception.
I have seen a number of these ambiguous shapes but never a top down view. Searching online only reveals a bunch of academic papers… is there some law that prevents seeing the true shape?
I don't mean to sound special or anything but nothing that was shown actually got me. I could clearly see it had no ups and downs (after some time the textures were too different) and the other 2 test did nothing as well.
The fins must be strobing, they don't move at all, the dots are a mess, it probably works in high def but not here. It's a nice farm background though.
So I know this video is 5 years old, but I just gotta point out that the Japanese at ~0:40 says "Captain Disillusion, the sad clown from space" And at ~3:06 it says "magic shape"
Cyan is a known color yellow blue, etc are to broad to be specific. How many actual colors are in this motion capture. The tristimulus values would be interesting as certain traits of the eye are manifest. Maybe the effect is due to the fact that negative colors cannot be reproduced electronically.

thats not the illusion. the illusion is that when the dot is still, the face morphs more quickly and heavily but when the dot is rotating, you cant really see it morphing as heavily.
