Such a fun chat! Thanks for hosting as always 😊 Glad to hear you're back to reading physically haha, and I open my arms to welcome you to our little self-pub fantasy family when the book is ready!
Loved this chat, always a fun time on a Love Bomb!! Also, I will absolutely take that blame for dragging you through ToG hahahah. Hope my cold stone heart cracks one day soon as well, I want to experience those emotional rollercoasters more deeply. Oh and did I heart you say Gavin is coming on soon? Exciting!!! 🤩🤩
1:03:51 Wait, really? How does people not know the pirate capture story? At the very least, i thought people would know it from popculture with the episode in the Xena: Warrior Princess show.
Playing catch up. This was such a great discussion. I'm reading Lions of Al-Rassasan now and I think I'm gone like it. You guys might even push me to finish Oathbringer at some point. lol.
Hi Laura. Look I really like your content and everything but the number of ads on your channel is just ridiculous. The ads are popping up every 5 minutes and this is so annoying that after an hour of this video I just can't continue. I know you have to make a living but this is a bit too much for me. None of your friends' channels have this many adds. Sorry. :(
@@laurablakeauthor I appreciate you taking that action although I kinda feel bad for my comment. I can usually just ignore all the ads as I take into account that I'm watching all of this for free while you invest your time and energy (and money). But today it irritated me beyond my patience which is probably at an all time low as I'm just recovering from Covid and I haven't slept properly for the last six nights. 😵💫 I will of course watch this and other videos of you and your friends no matter the ads. I just hate the YT for inundating all the wonderful content with so many ads in order to try to force me to subscribe to their Premium ad-free service. Which I won't. Instead I just subscribed to your channel. So don't worry about me. You can have the ads enabled. If that means that the channel like yours keeps on going I will gladly suffer through them. All the love and I wish you a lot of success. 🥰
It's been interesting seeing the tides kinda turn on Sanderson in a way with the whole shared universe/multiverse stuff. Obviously its not his fault, but the MCU caused a lot of shared universe fatigue for a lot of people (myself included and I mostly tapped out after Endgame, except for Spider-man) and as I'm mixed on everything I've tried outside of Stormlight I couldn't care less about the wider Cosmere but I've been seeing a lot of people starting to get frustrated by it, especially when Mistborn Era 2 wrapped up. A big concern I've seen people with similar taste to me is they're concerned how Sanderson will handle Jasnah as she's the only outspoken atheist in the series, and those people aren't optimistic so I figured I'd wait it out and see which way the wind shakes the barley. Tigana is my least favourite GGK (Brightness Long Ago is my favourite) but I do like it lot, moreso for the examination of cultural erasure and national identity under oppression, sure its Italian inspired but I could relate it to Ireland's history under British colonialism and it can apply to countless other cultures and peoples.
Hi Laura, sounds like July and August were good reading for you. The Spear Cuts Through Water is on my Wish List. in July I managed 4 comic books: Annihilation - Books 1 to 3 (re-read) Judge Dredd Complete Casefiles Vol 24 6 books: Thornhedge - T Kingfisher The Rage Of Dragons - Evan Winter (which is awesome) To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee (this was so good, loved it) The Bookstore Wedding (The Once Upon a Time Bookshop Stories) - Alice Hoffman Snow Country - Yasunari Kawabata (which was somewhat pants) Crow Girls - Charles De Lint (which was great) August was a slow month for my reading, I only read 4 books and one of those was a short story The Forgotten Beats Of Eld - Patricia A McKillip (excellent book) Piranesi - Susanna Clarke (awesome read, which made me buy Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell to read also) Priest Of Bones - Peter McLean (not the worst book I've read this year, but reasonably pants) The Willows - Algernon Blackwood (short story, but a very good read, excellent prose)
Long live the rereads!! Also sincerely hope that the rest of Dandelion and maybe even EotV if you pick that up will be hits for you. Happy reading friend :)))
I honestly think it was the combination of that and Dark Age. Between the two, I struggled with Dark Age more, it made me exceedingly angry 🤣Only slightly dramatic.
I also enjoy an older protagonist. Have you tried "Race the Sands" by Sarah Beth Durst? That has a mom protagonist I think in her late 40s. Also, both "The Curse of Chalion" and "Paladin of Souls" by Lois McMaster Bujold have older protagonists and some are parents. I keep hearing about the Will of the Many and need to try it.
Currently reading Will of the Many & really loving it! ACOTAR being a comfort read is 100% relatable🤣 I reread that series more than any other at this point lol. Also! I’ve never read an Emily Henry book before & I reckon I’m going to have to now😅
THAT CAT IS BEAUTIFUL. Do you recommand Emily Henry for a guy who wants to try a romance book ? I'm also thinking about picking up Outlander because I feel like the more "historical" romance might click better with me. YEEESS Piranesi is great.
Thanks! We think so, too! :) I do reccommend Emily Henry! The thing with Outlander (imo) is that it is a historical romance but it leads with the romance. It is a long series, and I found book one to be fine. I then read a bit of book 2 before I tapered out. It was one of the rare instances that I actually preferred the show to the books. Emily Henry recs: If you want a second chance romance, that has built out characters (including friends) but is going to punch you in the feelings, then I suggest Happy Place. If you want a rom com that feels like You've Got Mail, then Book Lovers. Beach Read also has rom com style moments but I feel you get more depth of the characters than in Book Lovers. Funny Story really is a great time- this would likely be where I suggest you start. People we Meet on Vacation does not work for everyone because some people aren't interested in friends to lovers, but if you're not opposed to that, it might work for you! Keep me posted!
More like Re-read Awash 😂 I bounced off Nevernight but i remember meshing with EotV better, even though it did read like Witcher fan-fiction at times. I need to get back to it. Congratulations on your progress with your book! July was mostly dedicated to comics but I read Don Winslow's The Winter of Frankie Machine and Guy Gavriel Kay's Last Light of the Sun. I don't love reading about vikings (I'm still dragging my feet on continuing Last Kingdom) but Last Light was really good. In August I read: *Comics* Green Lantern Book One Written by Geoff Johns | Art by Ethan Van Sciver - I think Hal Jordan become my fav DC character. He shuts Batman up with 1 punch 🤣 Hawkeye Volume 1: My Life As a Weapon Written by Matt Fraction | Art by David Aja - He's lame in the films but I adore Hawkeye in the comics. Thor God of Thunder: God Butcher Written by Jason Aaron | Art by Esad Ribic - Fantastic! Someone's killing deities across space, and has a connection to Thor's past, his present and his distant future. *Fantasy* Rain Wild Chronicles 1: Dragon Keeper - Really liked it. Wars of Light & Shadow 2: Ships of Merior - I'm in it for the long haul now! With the exception of Dakar, I really enjoy these characters and this world. I'm a mood reader anyway, especially with this series.
How did you find ship of Merior ? I am gonna start it soon. I loved curse of the mistwraith although the first half of that book was a bit difficult and there were scenes where I wasnt sure what was happening.
@@arselanehadjslimane2582 I really enjoyed it, though some parts I did struggle with, mainly because I don't enjoy reading from Dakar's perspective. I will continue eventually, but I'm already nearly finished Dandelion Dynasty and I've 6 books left of RotE.
@@thatsci-firogue I didnt mind Dakar in book 1 so I am not as afraid for book2, thanks for the answer ! Isnt too difficult juggling all these series at the same time ? I have this mental block where I feel I only read only one big series at a timr with standalones between each books.
Thanks for the fun you wonderful lovely ladiesss!! You two are making me want to read more Emily Henry again. And Laura please just read Hobb already, you will kick yourself afterwards hahah. Also, KITTY, send pics!! 🤩
Laura you truly made my day with this, I am sooo happy you enjoyed this first one so much. And from everything you both said, I have a feeling you two will love the direction the series goes in. The narrative becomes so much more focused and character/emotionally driven, which makes all the strong characters just shine even more. You are not ready for what's in store with Jia ooooh boy!! And I agree on the technology, but somehow I came to appreciate those elements in the later books, or I could at least shrug them off while being dazzled by all the other amazing aspects 🤩
Decimals in star ratings are for cowards 😜 I'm pleasantly surprised though, I was confident you'd like the female characters but everything else I was unsure of. I didn't love the first half of the book when I read it at the start of last year, but the 2nd half absolutely hooked me. The rest of the series so far as been much more character centric (though I dunno if I'd necessarily call it character driven (booktube uses character focused and character driven interchangeably), and with more women at the forefront. I've 1 book left and it's definitely a Top 10 Fantasy series for me.
23:41 I used to think i didn't like rap music at all, until i discovered Dan Bull and The Stupendium. 33:21 I really liked the romance in Songs & Swords by Elaine Cunningham. 1:46:00 Digital Estate Planning??
I don't watch a lot of booktubers with similar taste to me, so i feel like I inherently suck at recommending books, but Under Heaven and A Brightness Long Ago are my favourite GGK I've read alongside Lions. I'm not that familiar with the Welsh language and traditional Welsh names but the pronunciation of Derfel is kinda similar to a lot of traditional Irish names, where in Irish Gaeilge there is no v and is created with bh and mh like Siobhan, Caoimhe and Niamh. I know how you feel about the burnout and reading too much. Around 2022 I realised reading was no longer a hobby for me, it had become a crutch but I think I've a healthier relationship with the medium again now.
I have been enjoying this season ( I know I am late starting it). I also read most of the books decades ago which I think is of a real benefit. I also thought the episode lingered too much on the bond but the show often stumbles when it trying to provide clarifications of differences from the books. Thanks for doing this recaps.
