I'm about to tackle one of these myself and this video is a HUGE help! I laughed at 18:45 "with the camera nicely in the way" I have so much "soldering" footage that's just the back of my head.
@@sumawav good luck! Casio stuff can be a real pain with its flimsy parts. As for filming I've sometimes used a gopro on a head strap which can work ok, just less control and not so good on close up.
👍 Absolutely brilliant! Loved every minute n dry humour moment too.. and yes, would love to see a midi mod vid... Cheers! n keep an eye out for shitty caps next after mechanical knobs n sliders 😉😊
i've just got me an old 1980s ev pl20 (re20) the mic handles vocals well but has a layer of raspy distortion, when placed on a high spl guitar amp could it just be the foam? or something else? can you narrow it down? this is a recording I made of it: drive.google.com/file/d/1HVnJVXDEiaQ_4zPAgHeBe2EP026JJRCp/view?usp=sharing
Amazing video! This was exactly what I needed. I also have one with a US wired transformer and was sure it could be rewired to UK spec. I came here looking for an image of that and instead found a tutorial. Thank you.
I was wondering if you ever came across a threshold limit with how high the notes can go if you play notes in the top octave, with the octave transpose on "up", and the arpeggiator range on "3"? Mine seems to have a limit as to how high it can go in this reguard, and i was wondering if this was normal? I've just never seen this anomaly mentioned anywhere.
Awesome video and info! Bummer on the midi issues. Starting to see that the further back you go with great sounding synths, the less multitimbral and midi capabilities there are. Still a great synth :).
Yeah midi implementation on mid 80s synths is pretty simple generally, it was really early days! but didn't take long for things to become more fully featured
I mean, technically the korg monotron kicked off the cheap small analog synth revolution with stuff like the monotron. they basically pioneered the idea of small and cheap and proved to the world analog could be done like that, they then put that engine into the monotribe which came out before the minibrute, arturia took it a step further and made it more like a proper actual synth instrument for people in bands or musicians to play with loads of potential for patching. but the concept was done and the new analog revolution was kick started by korg. the brute is an amazing synth, but I wish they used different physical knobs, they often had a problem with getting really grimey and sticky. thanks for including the information about yves usson and his amazing work, great bit of history there.
Your right, thats spot on! Those Korg products came first so yeah Im kinda wrong with my history, thanks for pointing that out, I even bought the Monotron when it came out lol. Yeah theres that rubber used on the Minibrute which goes all sticky with age, also thanks for your other comment, very kind, different kind of knob playing tennis badly😂
yeah that would be a cool product, like the yamaha reface or roland boutique stuff, make sound editing more intuitive and like you mentioned in your other comment, add fx
@@bonzomusik - and more memory! Thousands of "user" patches would be so cool. Effects such as rotary speaker, and an effect similar to the Uni-Vibe, an MXR Phase 90 effects sound, delays, reverbs, and chorus!
might be possible, it uses the same sound chips etc as some of the casio keyboards with midi in and out but not really sure. you could also just sample your fav sounds from it
BRING THE CZ'z BACK ! Look at what Bonzo is reduced to play on because they didnt kip up with PD ! i bet he needs clean his hands after each and every use lol. All this struggle to have access to all that juicyness, because the knowers know; a CZ is a wet as a.....
Thank you for this amazingly detailed film! I just shared it with someone who wanted to fix their cz, and I hope it's convinced them to get a pro involved! Thanks again!
You can use anything really, as long as its not a dense foam, something you can almost see through, kinda thing you might find on a speaker cover. I basically used something I had kicking about from some packaging. If you don't mind spending a bit you can also get a re foam kit from ebay.
if you check the manual, no matter which model of cz, there's a section that always shows the midi-programmable settings and they never include anything pertaining to the operators. i'm not sure if it was a cost cutting measure or they hadn't figured out how to do it but it's a shortcoming of the entire cz line
you can transmit patches via system exclusive messages, thats basically what the programs do but yeah the midi is pretty limited it was still early days for midi though
Do you have the background music from the modification section uploaded anywhere? It's probably the first time I've heard the built-in sounds sounding good.
