Prior to 1980, I'm not sure whether this level crossing had barrier arms (or maybe it had the smaller arms you showed early on in the video). But in 1980, a tragedy occurred when a New Zealand radio personality was killed on the crossing. His car was hit by a train, and I think either the bells weren't working, or maybe he didn't notice them somehow. If I recall rightly, it happened fairly early in the morning, so maybe the bells were even off (if it was before 7:00am). His name was Peter Latham, and he hosted a mid-morning show called "All Things Considered" on the National Programme (later National Radio, now Radio NZ National). The show was subsequently taken over by Sharon Crosbie after Latham retired from radio to become an Anglican minister. There's not much about this tragic accident online, but I remember seeing news footage of it at the time. His car was totalled and I think they had to cut his body out of it. But the crossing was upgraded after that. Either barrier arms were added to it, or those big tall ones replaced the smaller ones.

I lived in Linden (bottom of Woodman Drive) for the first ten years of my life, so know that level crossing quite well, although it's a bit different from how it was in the 1970s, with those new barrier arms and lights, not to mention the two-train warning system (is that still there today? - I see this video is from five years ago). Still, seeing this video feels like catching up with an old friend. My mother and I sometimes used to take the train from Linden into town (we also occasionally went on the Johnsonville line). In my late teens/early 20s, my paternal grandmother (who lived in Tawa) and I did a few train trips from Tawa to Paraparaumu and back (we were both rather fond of trains, and she used to give me the NZ Railway and Locomotive Society Calendar every Christmas; I continued to buy it in her honour until they sadly stopped producing it in about 2020).

The old lifts at this hospital are knackered, and should've been upgraded a long time ago. Lots of ongoing issues with reliability, parts and finding technicians with the know-how to fix 60s and 70s relay controllers. They may not have same character, but as someone who works in this hospital and relies on the lifts to be able to do my job, any kind of upgrade here is very welcome indeed.

@@the_alex_ellis_channel6923 I’m not sure about other people reasons, but the main reason for despising them, considering they are basically the replacement for the airforce are this: - The sheer noise of them is absolutely abhorrent, they sound like an airforce that’s being choked by having all the vents covered. I’ve never known a dryer to be so unnecessary noisy for what is an average amount of power coming out of it. The plastic covering on them feels insanely cheap to the touch, to the point of where you can actually flex the plastic if you touch it with any great force, which I’ve never known any other dryer, even budget versions, do. Compare that to the airforce’s steel casing which probably could take a bullet… -Appalling reliability for a mainstream dryer, seriously the amount of times I’ve seen these either not functioning correctly, or just straight up broken, both in person and through videos, is absolutely ridiculous, especially for dryers that are likely to be no older than about 5 years. Again, compare that to the airforce, most of which in the uk were installed in the early 2010’s and are only just beginning to fail now, nearly a decade and a half later, and the deficiencies between the two are clear as day. So yeah, that’s why I don’t like it, because it’s basically a half arsed replacement to the airforce that was clearly conceived (and given the reliability, rushed to market) with only one though in mind, get a replacement for the airforce out that looks as close to a dyson as possible, hence the blade in it. I’ve never know a mainstream dryer to have such persistent quality issues to this extent, and to be so excessively noisy for something that doesn’t really have any more power than an airforce when dryers are aiming to become quieter, it’s frankly an embarrassment. Oh, and given it’s the airforce replacement, that means that we are gonna be seeing these pieces of (not so) cheap plastic tat everywhere in the UK, especially anywhere with a contract with PHS… fantastic🙄🙄🙄

Long before Bunnings were in this building, it was occupied for a while by Radfords ( a furnishing company selling beds, lounge suites, curtains and so on) As an apprentice I did some work in the building getting it ready for Radfords. I finished my apprenticeship 40 years ago. This lift (apart from the buttons) remains unchanged from back then. It will outlive us all.

I want to say the doors scream Schindler the keyhole placements the rigid middles and the klink sounds they make opening very common to a 1980/90s Schindler in the UK at least. Very interesting! Beeping *+* Jumbo Dewhurst - this is how you make them "un-boring" to the average filmer! (Unless you’re Australian, where apparently beeping Dewhurst is the default, but…can’t please everyone lol. Especially not with Dewhurst…) Btw, I think these may be OTIS originally. Thicker-striped door tracks gravitate me more towards OTIS than Express, and the 45° inside panel bears resemblance to those OTIS Elevonic lifts with Series 1 or 3. Big question mark still, but OTIS seems the most plausible to me.
