You fellas really sum the hobby up very nicely and the explanation about DXing hotspots around the world such as Cappahayden is excellent . I can attest to all this as I have DXed from Newfoundland as a resident here for the past 21 years. Thanks guys !
A wonderful video and it was so nice seeing you guys. So many smiles at what you were talking about. It is almost a mirror of my years dxing in Australia and now here in Europe. Cappahayden sounds a wonderful place to listen from. it is a wonderful and unique hobby. Trying to explain it to friends, family and work colleagues is not easy. I always say I'm off on Secret Mens Business. As for my wife, she experienced a Dxpedition on our honeymoon and even helped with the beverage. That was many years ago and has never been repeated. These days I mix with the Belgian and Dutch dxers and dx on a farm close to the French/Belgian border. 400 - 450m is about our limit. We target Asia, Nth America, Pacific and of course Sth America. Our marker station in the early evening is (You guessed it) VOCM. If St Johns is in early its usually an indication conditions are good. Good luck with the fishing into the future. I would love to see a follow-up video of the beverages and surrounds. A very enjoyable watch. Thanks.
Nice you shared your story guys. And yes, I once heard 590 VOCM on my car radio while driving to work here in Belgium. Not even at the coast. Greetings from the Knollehof DXPed team. knollehofdxped.blogspot.com/
Wonderful interview, fellas! You really explain well this wonderful but unusual hobby of ours! Walt Salmaniw (who does the same thing on the west coast!).
Thanks for sharing this MeHi. I presume these guys are licensed Amateur Radio Operators, but not necessarily if they are only receiving/listening. There are a lot of folks who listen to “shortwave” transmissions from all over the world, but what these guys are doing is not as common. FWIW, Amateur (HAM) Radio is a fascinating hobby, with many aspects, and many more people involved worldwide than non-hams realize. (The “death” of ham radio has been forecasted for years, but the hobby is still alive and growing.) Chasing very low power signals, both Receiving (Rx) and Transmitting (Tx) is known in the ham radio hobby as “QRP”. Newfoundland, of course, specifically Signal Hill in St. John’s, has an important place in the history of wireless communications. 73s, Bruce K8BRF
Sorry that it took a few days to get around to watching this. A lovely, peaceful video, as usual. We visited this National Historic Site when we toured eastern Canada, including the Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland & Labrador in summer/fall 2022. It was nice to see it again through your eyes. We were impressed that Canada (Parks Canada) preserves sites like this. It’s not just about mountains, rivers, lakes, and oceans, or railroads and “great works of engineering”, or … It’s about cultural heritage.
It’s such a nice comment Bruce. I totally agree, Parks Canada has done it right. They give me more stories to do, like The Irish Tragedy story, volunteered by the Parks staff. It’s just my take on what I see, and love to share that with my friends,
Gee, that also sounds like little towns in Ontario, all other province towns, the towns in the USA, South America, England (think Royals!) and most of the globe. Eventually I’ll be filming other towns…no the locals!
@@Trailers-and-Cigarettes Timing is everything. The Colony is as far south as we got on the coast. Hope to make it back to Newfoundland & Labrador someday.
I wonder where they have a safe town without synthetics? You know where grey sales people don't matter and you can just live without guessing what dumb phyco's want to play next
Not sure of your question. If you’re talking totally solar living off batteries? there are many being built around the globe, even near Edmonton Alberta.
We only saw that area in the summer (August) but it looks equally lovely in its winter clothes. Really liked the choice of music; it went well with the video. Thanks for sharing.
Such beautiful images, loved it! You should do one video going to the city, i want to know how the road and other houses look like. Good work on the editing too my friend.
Thank-you Candy. We were looking at your area, even put a bid on Bellevue Beach ‘AirBNB’ . . . deal fell through. Still LOVE the Medows (North/West). Now this place along the East Coast Trail cutting along our backyard with the Irish Loop is growing on us. Even the weather is different than St. John’s (warmer, no snow) The folks are super friendly and helpful. I’ll be on the road next year, filming more small towns . . . maybe St. John’s since it too is small.
Thank Travis. This is why we moved to the Irish Loop! Upcoast many folks call it. I’m working on my final episode of our NEW home - coming soon . . . I have to say “the mainlander’s are here to stay!”
Seems like a dream, as long as you don't have to kiss ass of the local slavery of bullshit! Why work if other people think they own a portion of your soul! Funny alcohol is not even the issue, personaly I feel it's how people got there! I don't drink, took me years of non sence to be pissed off enough to demand boundaries! That isn't much of a solution!!! How can you apply laws if the people who uphold them are targetted? Already went to the school of sight, it was crap! So what really was the issue and why is my personal space being targetted again? Send these kids to school! Get the lazy partner to take ownership! You have kids or you make deals with devils, figure your own crap out! I don't want people breaking laws to have kids on computers here because they are lazy and lie for a living! I have my own child and I am tired of picking up other people's problems!
I forgot to mention that this video quality and production is the best have ever seen on the MLS by far. I have been searching the mls Listings almost daily for the last 2 +years and have never seen a video produced this well. VERY IMPRESSIVE !
25 acres and the neighbors are within eyesight? ???????? What where you thinking??? Other than that I would leave Bracebridge and move there in a second I love it ..... my dream:)
Hey MeHi! Good luck on your new adventure in life. I miss having your talent in the leather world, especially for my motorcycle. Take care and hopefully our paths will cross again as you are an amazing guy. God bless.
I truly appreciate your warm comment John. The wife convinced me to keep my leather hand tools and, my sewing machine. So, if you need a recover in leather, I can help. But all other past life supplies are given away. email: artist@groovie.email
Sweet dreams! We'd love a place like that. Great Victron power source. Have it in our 5th wheel which is in storage. We've downsized to a truck camper for more traveling; fuel ranges between 9-14 mpg, slightly better. Check out Slim Potato on RU-vid, he's remodeling a place in NB and travels sesonally. Dreamers and Travelers on RVillage.
Hey Traveling Tom. Thanks for your comment. We love the place and it’s our basecamp, a place to regenerate from the road. The PowerCube actually is part of our trailer (1K AmpHrs/ 12K Watts - 3 inverters (Victron and Xantrex)). We do want to sell our trailer and will be visiting Germany RV show for a Motorhome (yes, better built and cheaper than North America’s RVs). Little larger than a campervan. I’ll probable downsize our powercube to fit the motorhome. Stay tuned for more movies!
Once you get there, you won’t want to leave. Take a stroll to sandy beaches nearby. Salvage is like the body of a spider with other settlements as part of it’s arms, overwhelming history.
Thanks for posting this. Now you know why we Newfoundlanders are so connected. Beautifully shot and the music is wonderful. So happy that you had a great trip!
