Thank you for your reply! As a matter of fact, Dos Shell was a rudimentary implementation of a task swapper, probably a part of the MultiDOS Microsoft was developing and ended. Microsoft did not want to continue this DOS branch as soon as Windows got more traction than expected, in the Win 3.0 timeframe.

Thank you for your reply and memories you shared! I fondly remember such toys. As far as I remember from all the consoles I had, I never saw this behavior in the snake game nor anywhere else. I am curious about one fact, though, I am not sure if it will be enough to have a rough idea of what may be wrong... Could you send a photo of the unit, if you still have it available, so I can more or less determine its vintage, please? These consoles certainly had their charm! I am sure few people would have experienced them if it was not for Tetris, in the early 1990s, and all the ingenuity in creating a highly affordable device. Of course, it was far from what the Gameboy and the likes allowed, but it was, for some, the only exposure they could have to this fantastic world!

Windows was a resource hog and had a highly inelegant design. OS/2 was a proof of what could be done but it had IBM as it helm and they were clueless as well as GUI blind. In the end, DOS lived much more than expected, particularly as PMODE Extenders created a decently scalable solution when resources were still scarce.

No, unfortunately, this is wrong, the issue is somewhere else! The adapter is active not passive! I took apart one adapter, long ago, and, buried in silicone, there is a very small board with a chip. I got the 16 Plus 7630 with the 4060, 32GB, and 2TB SSD, on sale for a little over $1000 USD + tax (retails for over $1800 USD). My unit was "refurbished" but it was essentially brand new. I am happy with the laptop, although there have been a few kinks to iron out, namely updating Windows, the BIOS, and installing Dell SupportAssist and My Dell apps to configure some aspects of the laptop. The fan is quite loud under load, like all gaming laptops, and the temperatures can get quite toasty during extended gaming. Luckily, I only use this for daily tasks, and plan to use it for video editing, so it's not such a big deal to me to have loud fan noise for short periods of time while rendering. This laptop has two personalities, an all-day daily-task driver with solid battery life and quiet operation for business/creative people OR, a sleeper gaming machine that drains lots of power and makes lots of noise while gaming.

The the test leads are poor quality. I replaced the leads. On my meter with a white sticker under the skale I have no problems with Ohm adjustment. Also the 0 adjustment with horizontal or vertical is much better. The Nanjing MF 47 meter has a long production history. It is universal used in China. In general the older meters are higher quality. It looks like the quality changes from one lot to another a lot. If you are lucky you will get a good analog meter for a very decent price. The standard meter Nanjing MF 47 has no continuity beeper or other modern features at all. It runs under different names. I would recommend to stay with the standard called Nanjing MF - 47 version.

My version has a fuse.
@retrowikid
@retrowikid 6 месяцев назад
@@thebuggy736 Thank you for the detailed reply. The meter definitely has quality issues, and it should have been taken out of manufacturing, long ago. Minimal features such as the presence or not of a fuse should have been trivial. The soldering job is shoddy, probes are poor, just about everything is sub-par. A major letdown of most Chinese older analogue meters is that they never come calibrated, their readings are all over the place, it is like they do not even care. Sadly, they care where it does not matter, such as using SMD components on a board. Of course, the MF-47 does not have that, but other designs do. There is no optimization anywhere else, though, all the development budget dried out there. Even 20 years ago it was still obsolete and its accuracy is modest when compared to top of the line analogue meters that are still manufactured in China, by the way, and sold under different brands.

It is so inaccurate that even determining a voltage is sometimes hit and miss. I mean, when you are measuring a battery and have to sort through tens, the fractional voltage part starts to matter. mV drift without lead connected is not a defect, normal for something not grounded and especially in plastic case suspended in the air. Sometimes the manual tells you this. Connect the leads together and it goes away. I am happy with the accuracy of this unit, the ability to calibrate it manually to your own reference, including the very sensitive uA setting using VR1. However this unit does not report True RMS. The range selector on this unit is very smooth. A nice unit, but I prefer the ANENG AN101 version 2 (with Hz and Capacitance). Give it a try if you haven't already... you can buy three of them for the price of the Uni-T and it's true RMS.
@retrowikid
@retrowikid 9 месяцев назад
Unfortunately, such a drift is not acceptable and did not happen with other models, newer or older, from different manufacturers, even no name units, so there is clearly a design issue with these ultra compact ones. There is a grounding plan on the unit, as all handheld multimeters have, so I still consider it as a fault. It is funny that ANENG meters are also made in Guangdong (Shenzen) China, as are the UNI-T products, which makes it very interesting for cross-comparisons. On the surface, the AN101 is a comparable product, probably better built than the UT120C, but is seems to have similar flaws. In terms of being a True RMS meter, I highly doubt that it is accurate enough to qualify. The AN101 still has no internal fusing, so safety is not much better. Overall, yes AN101 is probably slightly better but that does not say much.

@@retrowikid Over the past few days I've paid attention to professional and personal test equipment, from Flukes to Keithleys to Anengs. Maybe I work and live in electrically noisy areas because they all drift or show offset. Connect the test leads together, it goes away, including my UT120C. Just read my Fluke manual which says "it is possible and normal for this and other true-rms meters to display non-zero readings when the test leads are disconnected from a circuit." Also so this behavior on some other RU-vid videos. So in my experience, a few hundredths of a volt showing in the display is normal when leads are dangling unterminated in a EMF or static generating environment, even on well shielded units. No, these aren't safe devices but they sure are amazingly well equipped and handy for low-power, low-voltage tasks.

@retrowikid
@retrowikid 10 месяцев назад
Thank you very much!. The laptop is quite nice, the only design flaw I could notice is the keyboard. It was very good for running DOOM and other DOS games. No USB, the only way to attach something would be to use the parallel port, an adapter on PCMCIA for a CD-ROM drive, or simply swap the hard-drive and move it on another computer (there were 44 to 40 pin adapters for the IDE drive). On the topic of Windows 98, that is quite a challenge. Windows 95 OSR2 is the best operating system for a 486, albeit slightly slower than a Windows 3.11 or WFW. Windows 95 can run on 4MB of RAM but thrives on 16 or more. Windows 98 feels severely cramped in 16MB, so you need double that size. The CPU and particularly the Video chipset are totally unsuitable for the graphics load that Windows 98 puts it to. However, if you really needed compatibility with software, I admit, it was slightly better than Windows 95.

I think the laptop is quite compelling, particularly if you want a large 16 inch screen, good performance, expandability for RAM and storage, at this budget. In terms of battery life, it depends heavily on what you are doing. You can clearly reach 6 hours on a charge but heavy gaming/editing or other resource demanding activities will use up the battery quite quick. That's quite a disappointment that the UNI-T oscilloscope turned out to be such an unreliable device. They produce quite decent multimeters that last for years (even decades) and are generally of reasonably high quality. There are not many reviews of these UNI-T handheld oscilloscope series. Actually by now their specs are quite outdated and Chinese manufacturers have now noticeably advanced with their handheld oscilloscopes. Generally they come at substantially lower prices than these UNI-T series and have higher specs. Hantek, Owon, Zeeweii, Fnirsi, etc. Yes, these UNI-T series are quite old and you might expect that such a long living device would be well polished and free of bugs and should be quite reliable. However it doesn't appear to be the case with this particular model. I've seen another video with exactly the same model where the owner was replacing the main board because it stopped functioning. It's a shame that UNI-T keeps manufacturing this model that doesn't prove to be quite reliable for some reason. And again: why is there such a contrast with their multimeters vs handheld oscilloscopes reliability level? You might expect this oscilloscope to be at least equal to their multimeters in quality level even considering its outdated specs and higher price tag compared to other modern Chinese manufacturers on the market.
@retrowikid
@retrowikid 11 месяцев назад
Thank you very much, I really appreciate the detail comment. I agree that this UNI-T oscilloscope was poor and I was more surprised that there were premature failures on it. It is just as true that their multimeters are very good and I prefer them for their price/performance ratio. In fact, I think I still have one multimeter that has been in constant use for a decade and it still fares perfectly well. It is true, there is a problem on the board. Unfortunately, servicing is still difficult, as manufacturers do not care to make spare parts more widely available. Why is the contrast? I cannot give a definite answer but it may be that the platform they used was flawed, and this is a very good guess. Remember that no multimeter is actually their own design, most are second-sourced or reverse-engineered designs made by famous manufacturers such as Fluke and others. As a design is reverse-engineered, and the more complex it is, the higher the chances for a screw-up. When you take into account the "fame" of EEPROM poor designs that rewrite a tiny part of themselves on every initialization, there was a scandal on that years ago, you understand that oversight and a race to the bottom ends up with the results that you see. In the past, there were poor capacitors, recently, unreliably designed EEPROM and the future is unknown...
@johnpiettro4644
@johnpiettro4644 11 месяцев назад
@@retrowikid I see what you mean and you sound convincing. In fact I even saw somewhere mentioned "the long term relationships of UNI-T and Fluke" - go figure what that actually means but your guess could be perfectly valid and it might translate into "UNI-T have been reverse engineering Fluke devices for quite awhile" :-) And yes - we should admit that at many attempts their reverse engineering was total success (if it really was the case). I hope you can still repair the device some day. I wish you luck on that! Take care.

@retrowikid
@retrowikid Год назад
The Romanian MF 35 equivalent is interesting. Judging by the specs, it seems to be highly similar to the MF 47. I do not know how well it was built internally, although I can assume there were some flaws. I would be curious to know how it fared out of the box, if it was properly calibrated or you had to fiddle with the pots before taking any accurate measurement. Another weak point of many analogue multimeters of the time were the probes, and I do not know how Mavo 35 stood in this respect. Many similar multimeters of that time did not have chrome plated probe tips, the plastic insulator was not particularly durable and you would frequently resort to improvisations to lengthen the service use. Surprisingly, the Mavo 35 is not shown to have had a high-voltage probe option for servicing the CRTs of the era. I also wonder how it fared in other safety respects as it seems to miss even the customary 250-500mA fuse on the low currents measuring range. As a general perspective, some electronics engineers and servicemen did appreciate more products from RFT and Tesla if they could not lend a hand on a western model. Soviet multimeters were rugged but had much poorer esthetics and usability so they were not that great of an option. I assume that build quality and precision where some of the reasons why the Mavo 35 was not favoured compared with other models of the era. Ultimately, the Mavo was a clone itself, and it was bound to have the same issues as the product that was the original inspiration. Another strange aspect is why the Mavo 35 design was not updated and was still manufactured as late as 1987, despite it being totally obsolete.

There are schematics and mechanical diagrams that will be really helpful: www.oldradio.cz/b4.htm I would like to mention that restoration is an ambitious project. There are two aspects that should receive particular attention. First of all, ensure that you can find replacement belts and good grease (a thicker, standard one for bushings, not the liquid type for precision mechanisms). Worn belts can be used only as a rough approximation for new purchases, since they are looser than they once were. Always treat with care contact points for playback-recording mode switches, they should be well cleaned. Potentiometers can work better if lubed with a drop of WD-40. The next aspect that matters is electronic components. Germanium Transistors were not as reliable as more modern Silicon transistors, and replacements may be more difficult to find. Expect old transistor technology to be "noisier". Electrolytic capacitors may be advisable to be replaced, but do not embark needlessly on this endeavour, unless you are certain it makes a difference. In the end, please also keep in mind that this mono reel-to-reel recorder did not provide a fantastic audio quality even when new so expectations should be adjusted. In many ways it was not even a semi-professional product. It worked well for its purpose, but not much beyond that. However, I entirely agree that making such a device operate will offer a lot of satisfaction. Good luck!
