One of the best docs out there. I hope beyond hope that I'd have the integrity not to name names. HUAC was as un-American as anything in our history. Art matters a great deal, but not at the expense of our republic, already foundering in the wake of metasticizing hatred. Seems like our few centuries long experiment is coming to an end.

That Vanya is being consumed by envy, by boredom, by a realization that he has let life pass him by, as if it were some prize one is handed in exchange for merely existing. Life, selfhood, one's acquisition of who one is comes from inside yourself, he has yet to realize. The opening scene of this play is so constrained, so difficult to depict, for it seems bereft of all positive motion, empty of all purpose. People butting against each other, or sliding into motionless and routine, what once was and is now gone. But it is a remarkable scene, and it takes superlative actors-such as here-and superlative direction to bring it alive, as it must be played. As it is played here.

If you enjoyed this as I did, would heartily recommend Len Deighton's book "Bomber". It is a difficult read, but I believe it is quite factual.

70 losses a month.. it sounds high..but then you realise that it is two a day…and every day hundreds and hundreds of them dropped 2000 lbs each… ..bombing cities. That’s say a million pounds per night. Thirty million pounds a month!

This version is arguably far more entertaining, and better-performed than the original. In truth, both are very good, but, for what it's worth, I prefer this one. One minor fault comes to mind: Nobody in Britain would use the name 'phonograph' for a record player or gramophone. To us, it's a record player, a record deck, or sometimes, to this day, a gramophone.

Limitless respect for these ever so young men flying in the dark laden with bombs knowing at any minute they could die. I am going to Toronto next Tuesday to fly on the Canadian Lancaster "Vera" on 16th June, I saved up for 4 years to afford the trip and I know I'll be in tears for most of the flight 😭😭😭😭

Thanks for the upload. My highest respect to the airmen and groundcrews and civilians who risked and gave their lives to end this lunacy . Millions of deaths. On the ground and in the air. They where totally unaware of the mechanisms that put them in this undesirable spot in the first place. This lunacy wouldn't have been necessary if the politicians and their electorate would have used their common sense. And I'm afraid it's going to happen once again. Because of manipulating politicians misguiding dissatisfied electorate ,voting cattle. Nationalism, And worse Populisme. Failing to address this tendency in society in time to stop it. Dropping a few contemporary names . Le Pen ,Meloni ,Wilders, Farage, Boris?, Orban and so on Back then it where the Jews, people of colour, and Roma, and so on to blame everything on. In the end they got the majority of the votes. So they became in charge. That's how "democracy" worked . And the world paid the prize. Today it's Immigration, Islam , high taxes, costs of living, foreigners stealing your jobs, crime rates. Why would anyone risk their lives to go the "West"? Only if you are desperate. One would stay put with your kin if your standard of living is acceptable to survive and you are able to take care of your family. Nobody craves an uncertain future abroad unless you are desperate and are willing to accept an discriminating uncertain environment. But that's not the case for them. The "west" is getting richer and the third countries are falling far behind. We leave them no choice. We have to work on that! This disproportionate shameless division and acceptance of prosperity. Invest in the so called third world. Start by cancelling their debts. Aid them by building infrastructure. Sewage (Rail)roads Water supplies. Healthcare . Education. In the end we al be benefiting from this.

I'm from Leamington Spa in the English Midlands. The town was once known for it's light shows in the public gardens. My family had no members who served in the RAF during the second world war (all Army) although a great-uncle of mine did transfer voluntarily from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment into the Royal Flying Corps during the Great war. Anyway... one of my grandfathers had a few friends who served with Bomber Command and many years later I realise how fortunate I was as a lad to be able to listen to them chat and recall their experiences. One in particular was called Eddie George (RIP Eddie) and he was a rear-gunner on Lancasters. This is why I mentioned the light shows in the public gardens. Eddie would tell me that flying over German cities, but especially Berlin (the big city) was just like the light shows in the gardens. All the reds and greens of the markers, the flak tracers, the fires below. But when he described how he could see a fellow bomber alongside or above or below, and then it just wasn't there, the younger version of me was frozen. Eddie was a small wiry fellow, apparently he was a very good lightweight boxer in his day. My grandfather told me that. They were very close and I adored my grandfather so I guess he was like family in a way. Thirty years after Eddie's death, I realise he was a very hard man. Not just physically, but mentally too. He did 55 bombing raids over Europe - two tours (mainly though not always Germany and often Berlin) with a period of training new gunners in between the two tours. I hope I haven't bored you all with my tale and I'd just like to say thank you and always respect always Eddie (RIP) for what you did for us.
