This is so great to hear from you, I guess from American or Canadien. Your arguments are perfect and I use them very often, but people often laugh at me and say that i say it only because I'm Czech. But I would never say for example that Jágr is the greatest of all time, but Hašek simply is, it's not my fault that he is from the same country as I am 😅. Thank you for your objective opinion.
Mitch Korn was his goaltending coach in Buffalo...and would go on to coach alongside Barry Trotz in Nashville thereafter...later coaching Pekka Rinne, another late draft pick and beloved Vezina-winner in his own right, before coaching another winner in Braden Holtby. He is now back in Nashville alongside GM Trotz, as usual, where a young, petulant Askarov just recently requested a trade away from the coaching and mentorship of Korn, Rinne, and another Vezina-caliber netminder in Saros. 🤦😅🤷 Kids...couldn't keep his crease in back-to-back AHL postseasons, played only three games in the NHL, and thought he was ready to make the jump long-term. Sure thing, kid, off to San Jose's baby sharks with you. Nashville has a bad track record with Russian players (Radulov comes to mind). Good riddance and go Preds. Oh...and Hasek was a beast to watch in those early years of the Preds-Wings rivalry.
I agree that Hasek is hands down the greatest NHL goalie of all time. I wrote my own top ten greatest NHL players list and had him at number 6, behind Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, Howe and Richard.
Fyi, you can put underage created players on an NHL team. You have to change their birth year to 95 or older. You can't move under 18year olds so as long as he is 18 or older, you can move them to whatever team you want. Once on the team, go back to player edit and then edit his age to be younger. You can have a 16 year old in the your NHL gm mode. He won't progress until he starts his 18th year, but you can still play wth him and get stats at 16/17. Also, I found this video years after the fact b/c these older NHL games are still amazing and I'm fortunate I never sold my PS3 when I upgraded to PS4. I purchased NHL Legacy edition for PS3 and unfortunately I could not do what I was hoping I could replicate in 2014 which is go to the All Star Legends team and move players like Gretzky/Lemioux to NHL teams and start a franchise with a couple legends sprinkled in. Unfortunately NHL Legacy edition does not have that team/those players to do it. I know 2014 did but now I have to purchase 2015 and HOPE they have a legends team. 2014/2015/legend are all amazing games but they are all basically the same with some slight roster tweaks with legends game lacking a legend roster, ironically.
My kids are only 6 years old but they will know who Dominik Hasek is. Without a doubt in my mind he is the greatest goalie that the hockey has ever seen. I idolized this dude as a kid. Hell still as an adult. Dude was a beast in net!
If it's game seven overtime i bet my house on Roy... If it's a do or die international round robin tournament i choose the Dominator! If i'm starting a franchise i choose Brodeur!
Hasek and jagr were on that check Olympic team in 1998 and tore it up. They were the best players in the league at the time and when they were united it was amazing. Plus they had a great defense and they were just a little bit better than expected. Hasek had just won the Hart and vezina and jagr was in the middle of a 4 art Ross trophy streak so they were kinda unstoppable when you added all those great role players. Nagano was not ready for that kind of combined skill in net and up front. Nobody picked them either. It was all about Canada and how good they were going to be. So it was sneaky as hell for them to dominate the tournament the way they did.
I did not see him much live, but i was fortunate to watch him win a 1-0 game. Those sabres, under skilled, put their bodies on the line, checking bigger people, lying down in front of slap shots. It was a great team. The heart was there
Oh, that 98/99 team, low talent (except hasek) high grit, nobody want to play them, lol. They were robbed, no goal, refs got tired and gave it dallas. If not, would 6 period gane ot, lol
Nah. Brodeur is the greatest goalie of all time. I have nothing against Hasek, but you put Hasek on the Devils and he wouldn’t have been as successful as Brodeur for one specific reason. Brodeur was a technically sound goalie on a team that needed a technically sound goalie. Same for Roy or even Belfour. They made phenomenal saves as well, but the reason Hasek was able to do what he did with what he had was because he was unorthodox. If he was a sound goalie, he would have been ate up on the Sabres. If he was on the Devils, he would not have done as well because he team needed a goalie who played properly.
the cancelled 04-05 season, and the 05-06 season were two of the biggest missed opportuniteis Ottawa ever had at winning the cup, they had Hasek during that time but he effectively only played half a season before getting hurt at an international game. the 05-06 Senators were one of the most stacked teams in the last couple decades, and blew it in the 2nd round due to shaky goaltending from the late Ray Emery. That stuff haunts us.
The style was replicated, but not his success. Roman Cechmanek played a similar style to Hasek. Had 10 shutouts one season. Never had the same playoff success though.
In my statistical analysis of goalies, Hasek ranks number 7 all time. Strengths are his entertaining floppy style, his stats and his success. On the down side, he walked out on his teammates several times, he has 2 Stanley cups but Chris Osgoode was in net for the Red Wings for the second cup after Hasek got pulled, and he was inconsistent. When he was good he was exceptional, when he was bad he was a sieve. Whether he should have won that cup with the Sabres is debatable. If the Hull goal was disallowed, the Stars may have scored the next goal anyway. Those who claim the Sabre should have won that year base their opinion on the belief that Hasek was unbeatable. Bottom line his game winning percentage was very good but not the best. Other goalies like Plante, Dryden, Roy, Brodeur etc had better game winning percentages. Plante was a major force in goaltending, establishing the mask as standard goaltending equipment, the first goalie to help his defence field the puck on dump-ins, winning 6 Stanely Cups and helping the expansion St. Louis Blues reach the Stanley cup finals 2 years in a row. Plante is the man. Hasek is a good backup.
I know that NHL had the best(available) player from NA and Europe(not under "protection" of USSR) so you could definitely count Hašek's succes at home as meanigful. And that's the tie breaker.
(NHL headquarters; Toronto) New NHL Commissioner Izuku 'Deku' Midoriya: I can't stand it anymore; there's got to be a way to either have the league buy back the Ottawa Senators or fold the team altogether. Something needs to be done. Katsuki 'Dynamight' Bakugo: DEKU!!! Deku: What is it this time, Dynamight? Dynamight: The Senators have FOLDED!! Deku: WHAT??? Dynamight: We need a new team, Deku; Utah's NHL team has relocated back to Phoenix, bringing back the Arizona Coyotes. Deku: Why? Dynamight: A new NHL arena was built in downtown Phoenix for the restored Coyotes. Deku: But what about the NHL's replacement for the defunct Senators? Denki 'Chargebolt' Kaminari: Deku! Letter! Deku: What's it about, Chargebolt? Chargebolt: It's about the city of Cleveland wanting an NHL team to replace the defunct Ottawa Senators, since the Monsters have decided to fold. What should I tell them? (Deku presses a button on his office phone) Eijiro 'Red Riot' Kirishima: (on phone) What is it, Deku? Deku: Can you come to my office, Red Riot? Red Riot: I'll be there right away! (Deku hangs up his office phone) Chargebolt: I wrote down the Mayor's number; give it to Red Riot. (a few minutes later; Deku and Red Riot are talking in his office) Red Riot: You want me to call the Mayor of Cleveland, Deku? Deku: Yes; the Barons are back in the NHL, effective as of the end of the 2029 Stanley Cup Final. Red Riot: Where will the Barons play their home games at? Deku: Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. Red Riot: I'll call him right now. (first game of the 2029-30 NHL regular season; Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland) PA announcer: PLEASE WELCOME YOUR CLEVELAND BARONS!!! (2030 Stanley Cup Final; Cleveland) Deku: Well, Cleveland, you did it; your Cleveland Barons have won the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season by sweeping the Seattle Kraken. Your team has replaced the defunct Ottawa Senators, who folded just a few seasons ago.
I always argue when people say another goalie was the greatest of all time. You can talk about the ninety eight olympics, You can talk about six vezinas in eight years, And you can talk about both heart trophies and. Pearson trophies, And someone will say Roy, wne more cups. Stanley cups are a team trophy. They don't dictate how good you were at goaltending
One correction. They were the underdogs in the 1999 finals. Dallas was the top contender. Whether that goal counted or not, Dallas was most likely going to win that cup. I mean, it was game 6. And the score would have still been tied if that goal wouldn't have counted. This one of those perceptions built up over time that is a pet peeve of mine. "That goal shouldn't have counted, therefore Buffalo should have won the cup". No.
I'll add this. I remember reports about the Sabres struggling with confidence scoring because he would not let them score in practice. They would try to be so precise with their shooting in games because it was mandatory against him during practice. How many games were the Sabres outshot 39-21?
Imagine his numbers if he came over immediately after being drafted and putting a better quality team in front of him. I mean, Michael Grosek was the 3rd leading scorer? WTF?
