I really like that you might be doing a video on using tarot cards! There are so many tarot / oracle decks out there, some with very helpful guides for the art and the artist's take on the general meanings. They're a lot of fun to use whether they're tied to specific game mechanics or just splashing in as an additional action/theme/descriptor oracle when you want.
There are tonnes of videos out there, as you say. But, this video is one of the best I've seen. It's a shame it took several days of research to find it. Just the right amount of information for what I, a beginner, need to know. Thank you. :)
Im actually liking it more the second time around. There’s something about the structure of how the dungeon Morphs and changes. The card play is challenging and believe it or not I like the wacky art mixed with the newer art for variety. The expansions have added a lot of value for me. Plus it’s small and easy to play once u know the keywords and game sequences. Maybe my expectations are less or after playing so many games over the years this one just feels like a comfortable memory of what a fantasy setting was in my mind. I feel like the leveling up over time is lacking but I like ur idea of turning something into a permanent. I’m going to try a creating a way to for characters who survive a scenario get a benefit such as choice to have a permanent, or increase in an attribute, or other ideas like yours. Please continue to share you thoughts on house rules, I found your suggestions opened doors to new ideas. ❤
@raygun1966 Thanks… and you describe the reasons why I bought back into it… it’s easy to set up and gets the job done with just enough card play to make things interesting. I do like the (now quaint) art from the earlier sets with the other too. Will see how much it stays in my rotation after I get the stuff I reordered.
I love showing it as you move along with it. Keep working on it and it will keep getting better. I'm a fan of loose water coloring and using urban sketching as a basis for how I made some of my art (cuz I'm an amateur). One of the videos I typically watch often says "It's ugly at this point, but keep working on it a bit and it'll all come together." I have found that it usually does! Keep up the great work.
Just a note: The current retail version (June 2024) is not the one shown in the video. Each sector now has only 6 spaces, and the quest cards look nice, but there are only 15 in the game. What you see in the video is the v3 prototype version. The author says that the game has further been streamlined after v3 (technically, the retail version could be called v4).
Jfc. I just sat here for 15 minutes trying to find the name of the game then I finally realized that the name is _actually_ "Dungeon Crawler". I thought you were speaking in generalities. FailFish.
I wrote three comments but erased them. Instead, I'm giving you a virtual hug and hope you manage to find a way to make this game do want you want from it.
I completely agree with your assessment of how this game is frustrating but something always brings you back. The updated rules are much easier to read. I love the card art and flavor text it adds something to the game. Yes, the game is brutal. But so is Magic the Gathering Arena which for a time I said I had enough but came back to for a short time. Your house rules make sense. The idea of permanently attaching a weapon, armor or skill I think makes sense. Your right the next card can be the easiest or toughest card to deal with. Thanks for this video. Thanks for letting us know about the new sets!
Lol! 4:10 into this vid,and between that rad epic intro, and these conflicted thoughts, and comparisons to other big slugging games, I have no idea what lies ahead for the remaining 50 min, but strapped in! (sure it will be great!)
@@GeekGamers01 Yes, of course. I'm conflicted on games like this. I love the odd even weird art direction, but am also conflicted on it. the play seems not intuitive, but also interesting. I can see your conflict. Seems good though, we need games that arent the cookie cutter out there! thanks for covering the odd ones too!
Yes precisely… it is an odd duck but I give the designer props for continuing to make content even if he may be doing himself a disservice by not getting some help on some basic mechanical issues with the game. And it is funny what all these years will do to one’s perception of the art. He got flak (back when anyone even seemed to care about the game) for the unevenness of that art, and I likely complained a bit too. Now I can only salute him for using real artists and not AI.
I’ve never gotten rid of the game but I just can’t wrap my head around some parts of it. So when I come back,I have to start all over again. They need a significant tutorial play through showing everything.

11:50 for the familiar, it actually isn’t the gnosiophage that is a choice, its the Tumblefluff that’s an option (at the bottom of that section of the pamphlet
Ohh planning to get the cards! Whats the difference between DungeonMorph Crypts, Lairs, & Sewers Cards (black n white) vs Delver, Trailblazer, & Voyager Cards (blue cards)? The blue cards have 102 cards but black and white is 72. Would the delver be a better deal? but I totally dig the Black and White versions more. Do they make a difference on gameplay somehow?
Treasure seemed odd to me at first, but it's not bad, actually. You could just call it "resources." So instead of detailing everything you are carrying, you just use treasure. You need a rope to solve this puzzle? Spend treasure and pull that rope from your bag. Found a bunch of treasure after defeating a foe? Don't detail every item, just add to your treasure. Then, later, when you need something, spend treasure and say "good thing I found this after that last battle!"
Funny you mention this…. I REALLY disliked Dungeon Crawler, a card game I covered early on. That said, I will be returning to the game in my next vid, to see whether a cleaned up rule set makes the difference. If I truly dislike a game, I don’t spend time to make a vid.
This looked really good and I picked it up from Amazon over the weekend, really enjoying it so far and I hope there is a lot more content to come for this system as it is too good to abandon.
Super helpful video. Really appreciate being able to see the different game books as you talk through them and hearing your thoughts. I'm one of those people on the outskirts of dungeon crawling games -- curious but more comfortable with the more controlled world of board games, but i'm so curious about keeping my eye open for a more hybrid game. Keep the videos coming!

According to the Middlekin page, there is a skill that removes 1 Hurt. What does this Hurt do to one's PC? Is this damage? What are the consequences of Hurt? How can one heal from it?
Great tips and love that last map book. I never thought about map borders, so simple but really make the map pop - so already I've learnt something! :)
