Thank you so much for the video, I'm so happy to know you like the game! You did all the camping procedure correctly, by the way! You can cook and then eat the ration you cooked. In combat, the Razorjaw rolled a 44, which is a fumble, actually! You also forgot that all damage rolls must be checked with the Damage Dealt table, even spells (or traps, etc.), so a result of 6 is actually 2 damage. I have lots of ideas for more content, so you'll be seeing some cool stuff coming out for Ker Nethalas soon enough! Thanks once again for your work and for taking a look at my game!
Btw in the vídeo she had 0 in Reason and so a Roll was not made becouse of the doubt about having a base nr. Me dont knowing the rules and just watched the vídeo, even if the base is 0 Rolling still makes sense, as you can get doubles and get XP for that skill. I think 😅
@@IAcePTI yeah, that's totally true! That, and finding some items that grant you free skills and skill points, is the only way to raise a skill with a score of 0.
So glad you posted a video on this. I went all in and have been creating a character sheet in Quest Bound. You are my standard for solo gaming reviews! Thanks for all you do.
On the author's website your only options for purchase are a pdf for 13 euros or a leather bound hardback for 100 euros. I looked on amazon and the standard paperback was available for $20 usd. I bought it and downloaded the support pdfs from the author's site. Great review.
Great video! There is SO much available for solo play these days! I really enjoyed this, and appreciate all the work you do to share these games with us
Look at you with your spare attunement crystals 😛 I've got a potential magic item but can't find a crystal (or enough money to buy one)...soon, I hope! Great overview of a game I've been enjoying too! So much to do (and so much to forget - I do have trouble remembering all the abilities / effects / modifiers as I'm playing). Hopefully Alex continues to bust out more content going forward!
Brilliant! Songlad you are liking/loving it. To me Alex is one of the best game cteators out there and super cool. I have had lots of fun with his games. Started with Across a Thousand Dead Planets and backed more stuff and vought more stuff since it is all good and all hits a different itch. I personally love the Grimdark blood and mud feel to my games.
I love the idea of that dice chain of discovery - starting at the D12, and moving down. Do you know off-hand what other games use that kind of system? That's probably the best system I've seen for building tension and exploring.
I love it too… can’t remember which games have it but I’ve seen it before in a bunch of games often with expendable items such as armor etc. It works well here as the tension die and lair search. It’s also used for armor.
My game Broken Shores uses the Usage Die chain to determine the size of dungeons, among other things. I think it's a really nice and simple way of determining things like timers or like I said, the size of a dungeon you're exploring but don't know how big is going to be. Glad you like it!
I am also just discovering this game and had no idea an expansion was coming. My current favorite title in this space is 2D6 Dungeon, but this looks like it's going to be quite enjoyable as well. Thanks for the detailed video!
Thanks to this video I’ve bought the game and have been playing it a lot! I’m just about to start my 3rd domain (after doing the tutorial and my own domain of 30 rooms!!) and I’m level 3. I’ve really enjoyed the journey so far, so thanks again for making this video!
As always a superb suggestion, bought and started it today and for someone like me who rolls terribly, i managed to have a goal of relic hunter and somehow found a spoil of the band of knowledge relic after my first room and encounter win, hopefully that was a rare bit of luck as now i have a big stat bump which i hope doesnt make it too easy as i like to be fighting the tide. One thing im not sure about is exhaustion as ive had 3 fights now and i dont get any exhaustion ? think im likely missing something there ! Anyway thanks again, most enjoyable.
Ooh that is lucky as I have not come across a relic yet (& also have that as my goal). I also don’t think exhaustion has come up yet in my game. Could be a quirk; could be the rules-hard to know
I have so may cool rpgs that I keep thinking I will play solo. Not sure what always keeps me back from actually digging in and playing--some times all the prep and rule checking, et cetera feels daunting or even takes the excitement out of it. Bought this after your wonderful review. Maybe this will be the game.
I’ve been picking up a few solo RPG systems but I just ordered this and it’s the one I’m most excited for now. I’m thinking of making a flowchart of the playing procedure (if it’s not something the book already has).
Quick question: Does the book have a campaign to act as a tutorial, walking you through the steps of exploration and combat? Thanks for the video, I'd never head of this!
There's a starting Domain that acts as a tutorial in a way because enemies are easier and you get some starting gear, but nothing that explains step by step how the mechanics work. The book itself has examples in the different sections, though, and there are also some gameplay videos online.
Great video as always! I backed this, but I have yet to play it. Looks great, though! I have started to make solo gaming content on my channel, and in the solo RPG challenge video I uploaded today, I played using a coin (coins are the challenge for March), and a book, and I did some tongue in cheek writing. I am not going to ask you to subscribe, or watch any other videos. But since you like both books and writing, I figured maybe you’d like this one. It would brighten my day if you watched it and left a comment. But absolutely zero pressure, I know all too well how precious time is and how hard it can be to find it, and with your channel I’m sure you get too many requests already. So just do it if you feel like it!
Much more complex than the original 1980's Adventure Books from Scott Adams and Ian Livingstone. Does anyone remember those? ;) They did eventually get digital versions made (STEAM). But I really liked the simplicity of the books. I had collected almost ALL of them way back when.
For magical attacks, do we still roll a hit location roll before resolving any damage? Just started my first run and I'm having so much fun. I'm only 3 rooms in though. lol
Great question & it depends on what you seek. I think this game offers more theme and , as it is solely contained in one book, more approachability. D100 is more generic fantasy and it takes longer to make significant differences to your character. While you can play the game with just the main rule book, it has been out so long that there are 8 or so books out there with rules spread among them.
@GeekGamers01 Approachability is definitely my main concern. I'm used to learning a ruleset in a group situation, and I need something that's accessible. I really like how thematic this particular games looks, so I'm leaning this way ATM. Thanks for all of the content GG!
@RadRobots I think you will enjoy this. There is a lot of meat here but it is pretty easy to digest especially if you download the player’s aid from his website. That organizes rules in a way the book doesn’t.
Game looks very cool. Thanks for this video! Going to order this game today. I have a question: Is that a game mat or tiles on your tabletop or are those game maps you printed yourself?
Looks interesting! Does it happen to have any multiplayer variant (GM-less / co-op)? Also, FYI: Perplexing Ruins has a free single page game/generator called Solo Gaming Sheets. Are you familiar with it? I think you’d like it!
@@GeekGamers01 Even better! Thank you. As for SGS, Chaoclypse did a little run-through of it recently, and frankly, I was amazed by all the stuff contained on a single page. I just thought you’d love it, too.
This looks wonderful. I’ve never played a game like this. I have board game dungeon crawlers though. Aside from the book. Is there anything else I would need to purchase to play this game?
Never played a solo RPG before, saw a tube about them and decided to try Ker Nathalas. I ordered is on Amazon... and maybe that's the problem. but where did you get the character sheets? Is that something you got if u were a Kickstarter? if there is someplace to go to get them, it would be great if u could place link... your video has been of help to me- and earned u a follow... thanx
Wow really cool! Sounds like Diablo as a solo RPG, just way darker (like Mörk Borg or Shadow of the demon Lord?) and elements from call of cthulu with sanity etc. I am very intrigued. I really liked 'Disciples of bone and shadow' and 'D100 Dungeon'. How does it compare to Disciples? Going to download the quickstart rules immediately
I forgot about Disciples but that is a great game and great comparison. It’s “like” that more than it is d100 or 4AD but Disciples has a bit more overland travel, tables for making missions etc. If you liked Disciples (I did!), I think you’d like this a lot as well. It has a similar feel.
Ordered it last week through amazon, already read the whole book and now I am in the middle of the first domain. That was a quick buy 😅 but I am loving every part of it ❤ Thx again for the great recommendation! And @Alex @blackoathentertainment I am already so looking forward to the Expansion Zine! 🎉
I LOVED Choose Your Own Adventure and tabletop RPGs as a kid and your video is the first I've seen of single player RPGs, consider me super intrigued. I have to ask, is it cumbersome to play? I feel like you're spending half your time looking things up which could become tedious. Is that typical of these types of games or am I not properly imagining it?
There are so many different types of solo RPG games that it is hard to generalize. This one has lots of tables; others don’t. Personally I love tables so it isn’t tedious to me but if you didn’t like tables you’d be more happy with a different ruleset. I’d recommend my solo RPG playlist as a place to start to see the variety of games and/or my solo GM guide which presents narrative principles to help with solo play (& less reliance on tables and oracles).
The comparison to Four against Darkness and D100 Dungeon is useful, thanks! @blackoathentertainment5617: maybe you want to fix "exHaustion", on the character sheet. 😀
That error was fixed months ago, not sure where Deborah got the old version of the sheet, from, haha. I might have forgotten to upload the fixed version to my site, I need to check it out.
@@GeekGamers01 yeah, I tend to forget updating stuff there, so probably there. Make sure you check the DTRPG files, though, because there are more player aids there (exploration flowchart, table sheets).
Hello. In 29:40 when due to an event you are asked to do a Reason Skill roll you didn't because you had 0 in reason. Don't you still need to make the roll though in case 1. You roll a oo and o on the dice and 2 you can still roll double on the roll so you can check the Reason for upgrading and also getting a fumble?
@@GeekGamers01 Ok re-watched that and got the general idea of them. Thanks. Hope you can do some comparison videos in the future. Might be interesting~
These things are never clear. It looks like the book on Amazon is not enough. Is there a kit where I get everything or is it truly the book and if so, on the book then where do I get the map? Is the map inside the book, what are all those other things do I really need them?
All you need is the book. I recommend the reference pages from his website for clarity but none of that is new info-it all comes from the book and is just more clearly organized.
I’m designing a dungeon crawl for our 3rd Isles game. What system or product would you recommend to draw inspiration from if I’m designing with younger players in mind?
Not sure I can really help here but there are kid friendly RPGs like Kids on Bikes or No Thank You, Evil that you might look at. I’m not an expert here at all for this question.
You keep apologizing for what you're doing and as a viewer, I think you're doing fantastic job with this You're rolling through it learning at the same time you're teaching us it's fantastic. And in the end this is a game you can adjust the rules as you see fit as with any game to make it enjoyable for you as long as you stay within the confines of how the game was created. But you're doing a fantastic job
Glad you enjoy the content. I am not aware that I’m apologizing for what I’m doing and have never received this comment before… when I am going through a game and am unsure of the rules I like to make it very clear to viewers so they don’t take my gameplay as a tutorial.
@@GeekGamers01 maybe the usage of the word apologizing is the wrong choice. It's you seem very hesitant sometimes to break cannon with you know the product that you're doing and I get it I understand why you're doing that. But hey just have fun in the end just have fun
Thanks for this review. The only drawback is that the author is not really maintaining his games with extensions and is creating a lot of different games (the new one is Path of the Aram Thyr).
That's not really true, all my games have expansions. Warlord Ascendant is just 4 months old so I haven't had the time to release an expansion for it, and Across a Thousand Dead Worlds was just released, but all my other games have new content already. I realize the importance of supporting my games with new content, and besides, I love my settings and have fun working on new stuff for them. I'm only one person so I can't really release at a faster pace, but if you're a bit patient you'll see how I support all my games, sooner or later!
maybe you could help him, is one man designer for lot aeesome great big games ! and too often they have expansions, the problem is we dont have enough time and money for all games released !
Ha. Not a drawback at all and not true. Some companies can't even put out errata or update PDF. I get updates all the time and Alex personally responds to questions on his discord.
@@blackoathentertainment5617 I've got Riftbreakers and I don't think there is an extension on DriveThru (but I can be wrong). It's not so easy only with the title to see if it's an extansion and for what game. I can understand the "one person" issue and I could understand if you invest your time only for games that are the most succesfull. And I'm sorry if "drawback" is too negative, I'm not English.
@@blackoathentertainment5617 What I can see on DriveThru : Sacrifice => Chronicle vol 1 => Demonic: The Official Sacrifice Zine - Issue 1 => Demonic: The Official Sacrifice Zine - Issue 2 Broken shore => Egrastea Reborn Riftbreakers => no expansion ? Across a Thousand Dead Worlds => Starting Crew & Exploration Sites Blood Moon Apocalypse => no expansion ? Warlord Ascendant => no expansion ? Under Ashen Skies => no expansion ? Ker Nethalas => no expansion ?
A great review of a wonderful game. So, thank you very much! One criticism, however, is that I struggled to follow at times due to pronoun usage. You referred to the creature as "they" and not "it". I kept on thinking that there was more than one. It took me a while to discern this.
