The scene requires Kiruko to face her identity issues head-on, questioning whether she is Kiriko or Haruki, whether she is male or female. This anime emphasizes gender neutrality and desexualization in one storyline, but in another storyline, Robin's psychological and physical violence forces Kiryu to confront and accept her female body. However, biological sex is not the most important thing here. What’s most important is the problem she has been avoiding all along. When she hesitates while filling out her name on a form, it becomes clear that she is avoiding the core issue: 'Who am I?' She is left with no choice but to face it directly. Is this scene necessary? Maybe not, but this is not merely the author's twisted sense of humor meant to disgust the readers
God, I can’t wait for season two. Hell, I can’t wait for season FIVE - volume 9 of the LN introduces a character who’s going to be so much fun to watch in animation. (Interestingly, there’s already dialogue in the anime that implies their existence, though there’s nothing else about them until LN9.)
Fun fact, Shin was both a symbol of good and bad luck when he was among the 86. For him to be the Reaper, it meant that him being in your squadron would mean that you will survive longer. However, it also meant that you would eventually die, because Shin is always among the last few of the survivors before replacements came. Shin was constantly shunned because of this ridiculous title given to him, but it has always been his grace, because it meant that his comrades could look up to him to carry their hopes forward. This title however has only tormented him. He only sees it as a curse that deems those around him will perish. That’s so depressing.
"I just....wanted to help" How beautiful that, this is the most purest form of what being a hero is all about, and this line comes from Gentle, a "Villian"
This is one of the most horrible episode that I've ever seen and I really like it for that. This is not the first time I've seen rape being part of a story, and most of the time they're either cheap to the point of making me desynthesized about it. Or worse, they're borderline fetishized. This wasn't it, this was psychologically CRUEL and it made me feel sick. And I think that stories that are able to make us feel so strongly are powerful, even if naturally divisive. My biggest criticism is that it feels out of tune with the rest of the show. In Made in Abyss we're already expecting fucked up things to happen, it's the nature of the Abyss and the story. This show is pretty light with the occasional sadness and hints of fucked up things, and then it suddenly screams TRAUMAAAA with a flying kick to your face.
It's a common troupe/gimmick in this series. The moment human transmutation is performed, the alchemist can be said to be "stepping/trespassing into God's domain" for attempting to play God at creating a human. Which is why they are all transported to the Gate of Truth, the subspace where God/Truth exists. God also known as Truth, will then be punishing them for their transgression. To be more specific, for disrupting the natural order of the universe, because this natural order of the universe is God and Truth in itself. Using the Law of Equivalent Exchange in their own terms against them and performing a forced trade/exchange against their will, God/Truth took something precious from them as punishment for their transgression. What God/Truth took, it gave back to the alchemists in the form of knowledge and ability to perform alchemy without transmutation circle. However, the reward is hardly enough to justify the price that the alchemists paid, because God/Truth took what is most important to the alchemists in a form of cruel irony or poetic justice as fitting punishment for their transgression. Alphonse wanted to feel his mother's warmth again, and so has his body taken from him, unable to feel warmth or anything again. Edward wanted his mother back, and so Alphonse his brother and only living relative left is taken from him along with a leg so that he can never be able to stand proud and strong with his own 2 legs again. Any alchemist that performed human transmutation will be able to use alchemy without the transmutation circle because they saw the Truth, it is already hinted here in this episode, that Edward can do what their Teacher did. Meaning their Teacher also performed human transmutation at some point in his/her life.
Hearing you guys talk like this... you guys are going to LOVE Kizu, Second Season and Final Season (Tsuki, Koyomi, and Owari). You will see SO much of the characters, it makes me giddy to wonder how you'll react

it takes place in the early 60s. A close look at the manga, looking at the paper that Loid picks up with the orders at the beginning, it looks like Nov 23 1962. This fits with the cars, the tech, the clothing and furniture. Most all of it is from the late 50s or very early 60s. This also makes sense from the perspective of these years being the time frame of the classic (Sean Connery) James Bond movies. This is the golden era of classic spy stories and the height of the cold war. The conflict between the USA and the USSR would often focus around East Germany and Berlin where this is nominally set. Recently declassified documents in Germany do confirm that as much as 1 in 4 Germans were spying on their neighbors for the Stasi, so the concern about being suspicious is also not out of place or exaggerated.
Comparing alchemy to baking is reminding me that there's a person on Tumblr who studies the occult as their job and they summarized early alchemy as "dudes in the fifteenth century were trying to figure out if you could unbake a cake."
And thus ends the second light novel. I wonder if they will keep the 1:1 ratio? I think Lakan, Fengxing and Maomao are all on the autism spectrum. I do want to know: 1. Why did the madam keep Lakan in the dark for 14 years? 2. Fengxing was born in the brothel. Is the Madam her mother, therefore Maomao's maternal grandmother?
They did GC so right!! I had to ugly cry. An old criminal who wanted to be a hero atoning for his crime through the power of love. Then they gave him the OST of a hero!! I was overwhelmed.
Alright, even if you don’t watch the dub, everyone in the world can agree you NEED to watch the dub bloopers after finishing the series, because they’re maybe the best thing ever made
The dub is much better than reading the sub. I dont mind the voices, but the translations seem better in the Dub. Especially how they end the beginning: "Because what could be the cost of a human soul"
Ben said something like "i hope they bring back Gentle" i think from the last episode's reaction or maybe before that. And when i heard it, as a manga reader, i was so hyped and excited. Gentle's come back in the manga is so freakin hype. His manga panel is so cold.
I am so excited you guys are going to do this series!!! And as someone who watched both without reading the manga, I can say both iterations are good & worth watching. I felt the first one made emotional scenes feel more emotional. And yes, the manga was not finished when the first show was airing, so they did take it a different route. And I understand how manga readers were upset because there were great characters that were left out (that are in brotherhood), but there were some original characters to that series that were good on there own merit. I personally like the story line from brotherhood better, but I very much liked the animation style from the first one. In the dub, Alphonse was voiced by a kid who was the same age Alphonse is in the series. He was such a sweet baby! All in all, I am excited to see you take this journey! It was one of the first anime's to ever make me cry! (I was 15/16 when the first FMA aired, so I was not that easily moved to cry by shows & movies.)
I have no idea if you guys read comments, but I'll drop this here since I already typed it out to someone else: The scene is shocking because you as the viewer view Robin through Haruki's eyes; that is, you are blind to the red flags surrounding Robin because he is put on a pedestal. The execution of the narrative works because it shatters your world and naïveté just like it does Haruki/Kiruko, when you should know by now that this world is messed up. I'll add to that that it could've been done differently, but in a world where everyone and everything is out to get you, would you have been affected as much if Robin was just a generic threat? For that moment, Robin makes everyone else look tame.
When reading the Gentle return in the manga, I thought it was a cool moment but nothing crazy or emotional. The anime had my eyes leaking - they did such a phenomenal job.
If you want to learn more about real world alchemy and how it shows up in FMAB, I highly recommend Max Derrat's series of videos on the topic. It's a good primer for people who are new to alchemy. However, I would suggest waiting until after you finish FMAB, as his series does contain spoilers.
Think of Alchemy like a chemistry equation. It'll be easier to understand. You'll need Carbon and Oxygen to create Carbon di oxyde. You can put together Nitrogen and Oxygen and expect to create Carbon Di Oxyde. It's literally the same principal applied in a much much broader level
while waiting for the next season, maybe you wanna check out an old anime (if you haven't) whose main characters are often compared to jinshi and maomao: ouran host club high school. their dynamics are similar (overreacting male lead and nonchalant female main character). it's a very lighthearted anime and only has 26 episodes in total 😊
The thing about the tracks is that it symbolizes how ridens Able to move on after what's happened where Shin is still caught up in that he has no reason to live.
