We drop off to WPB, Okeechobee, and Sanford. Sanford is mostly for the AutoTrain convenience, and it ain't much, but it's way more comfortable than either WPB or Okeechobee and lot more safe and fresh than is the old station in Tampa.

Dave, Thanks for posting this. Grew up in Sanford, my parents took me on the train in 1960, all of 6 months old. Rode the train from Sanford to Boston and back must be 50+ times. Damn shame City of Sanford couldn't step up for road and station improvements to keep that alive. Kills me to see that shot of the Station demolished. When my father was Mayor he never would have let that happen. Moved to Boston now travel the NEC mostly, everything you knew about Sanford and Florida is changed and gone. Progress.

To bad they didn't have a frequent rider program back then. If you're like me bet you enjoyed every second of all those trips. Thanks for watching

Was WIVY owned by Rounsaville at that time? Great radio…thanks again Dave!
@DaveEdwardsEntertainment
@DaveEdwardsEntertainment 2 месяца назад
According to the 1976 broadcasting yearbook, Rounsaville Radio purchased WMBR 600 KC and WAIV-fm 96.9 on 7/18/75. This was a very successful top forty station and according to the yearbook was programmed by the legendary Tom Kennington. WAIV had an album oriented rock format and was very well received by the Jacksonville audience. WIVY-fm 102.9 and am on 1290-AM, was owned by Jacksonville Broadcasting Corp, Y Tom Kirby president and general manager. Hope that helps Al, your questions and comments are always appreciated.

@@DaveEdwardsEntertainment thanks Dave! Hope all is well by you. I know Tom Kennington left WFUN as PD In the fall of 1974 to become national PD for Rounsaville and Don Wright was the last PD of WFUN before they went away 1-06-76. Tom West, who was the morning guy at WFUN following Bwana Johnny’s departure in August 74, went on to be PD of the legendary BJ105 in February 1975…so I’m guessing Tom was national PD and took care of Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville. I have talked with Tom on occasion over the years and he was extremely nice to me and we traded a lot of stories.

I was Tom Edwards at Y-103 in 1987 and knew AJ Davis (taught his son in middle school), Tony Mann, and Dave Scott. I worked the graveyard shift. In fact, Dave donated some legal IDs and sweeps for my middle school students' internet radio station in 2012. Great memories for a, then, 27-year-old.

Great station Tom, Glad you got to be a part of it. I was there in 1974-75, had a great time and learned a lot from some very talented people like program director Lee Fowler. Lee went on to be one of the most respected talk show hosts in the Miami area. Morning guy Frank Reed went on to WNBC after his gig at 96X Miami. As I type this I'm looking at that picture of the Gulf Life Center, next to the Hilton where the station was located. The building was lit for the holidays and I was out there, In freezing weather, doing time exposures. Thanks Tom for sharing your memories.

WAME was a direct competitor to WQAM in the late 50's and early 60's, before WFUN was launched. WAME was a daytimer back then; they had to sign off at sundown. When they went with the R&B format, the owners upgraded the station to 24 hour. Had they been full time back then, they might have given Tiger Radio a real run for its money.

Dirty secret about Treanor - he had issues with the bottle and would go on air buzzed. EDIT: Not all the time, but he even admitted he had issues with alcohol through the years and would go on air with a buzz once in a while, but not completely wasted, either.

That was my go to staton back in the late 60”s!!! That was a groundbreaking broadcast that pioneered the FM ‘underground’ station concept. Sadly, it fell by the wayside, to be replaced by ‘corporate’ stations who tried to emulate KPPC, but failed miserably…
