Field Day allows amateur radio operators to set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's ability, skill and service to the community and nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach and technical skills all in a single event held annually the fourth full weekend in June . In 1993 the Orlando Amateur Radio Club set up an impressive array of the latest technology in ham radio communications at Orlando Fashion Square, a very popular shopping mall on the east side of Orlando. What a great opportunity for the public to be exposed to amateur radio. As you can see in the video the event generated quite a bit of interest. I’m sure that a few of those spectators found the event interesting enough to get licensed as a amateur radio operator or “ham.”
