The tariffs are now required as they now realise they need to raise funds in order to dispose of EVs and the environmental damage that the mad craze for EVs is causing.
Can't just rebuild the UK Car industry - it's gone, too little, way too late Labour... However, you could service>refurbish>recycle EV batteries etc... like what Renault are doing with an old factory/car plant perhaps, but nah all BS from politicians in the end Tories saying the'd reverse the ULEZ expansion - thought they said they looked into it & said they were advised they can't legally challenge it in court. Now they claim they will revoke it - more BS & way too late now Rishi Apart from EV tariffs increasing from July '24, the EU speed limiter comes into effect, so expect new car sales to impacted Meantime, we're returning our MG4 (company salary sacrifice scheme) end of the month, mostly coz it's too dangerous with it's "Driver Assist" features, that has slammed on the brakes if you forget to disable it (every time). Lovely car, but the car decides to shake the wheel sometimes for no reason & if a cyclist weaves & cuts in front of you - it slams on the brakes. It did this only now & then, but it seems to be getting worse/regular & hence we've decided to return it (Cheers EU for all this) Politicians, UK, EU, the world over - JUST STOP bringing in more policies & legislation to help the car industry - it's killing it & you're just making it worse with every new policy you dream up
Investing money in the country's manufacturing infrastructure is one thing. But what is equally important is the ability for these industries to access cheap energy. Energy prices that are close to those being enjoyed by our main competitors such as China and India. Otherwise, these manufacturing facilities just won't be competitive or cost effective, therefore will fail. The Labour Party will simply intensify the war on the motorist, if you think things are bad now give it 12 months and we will look back and say how good things used to be prior to July 2024. As for the Tories, now they have burnt their bridges, and these are just words meaningless words great ideas but meaningless words.
6:53 National insurance is higher for a 20% tax payer. If you’re a 40% tax payer your savings is 40%+2%NI. If you are a 20% tax payer your savings are 20%+8%NI. 42% vs 28%. Must add that you also save on student lon and child benefit etc etc
Jim do you have any examples of local planners refusing planning permission for EV charge points? Or is it just them making it too difficult or asking for unnecessary consultations? Thanks.
There are hundreds nationally. Just look at the Tesla chargers at Fleet Services as one example, I think it took 3 years for permission to switch them on
I have friends in Spain, Portugal,Australia and New Zealand. None are considering EVs. None are scared of what’s going to happen.Motorists not got targets on their backs.
You can't believe a word the two main party leaders say and the majority of M.P.s are incompetent liberal lefties The Tories had the power to stop the expansion of ULEZ but failed as usual. There has been a move to the right in many European countries due to the nett zero nonsense and we need a political earthquake and Reform UK offer the best option.
In my eyes, the main problem with Reform and those kinds of parties is that they really only have 3 or 4 headline grabbing populist policies as they know there is no way they will win the election. I could run today and say "free everything for everyone, zero tax" but I would have no chance of winning and actually having to deliver on any of it.
First of all congrats on reaching 44k subscribers, onwards and upwards. Great balanced video, still not sure who to vote for, they all look after themselves and whoever funds their party. Totally agree re potholes, instead of just filling them in they need to look into why it is happening and is there a better way to stop it happening. Loved the Rishi without a dishy comment.
They all promise the earth and visit your home when there’s a GE. When they get into power they go back on everything. The whole political structure needs changed with not a single politician involved in it.
All politicians see all motorists as cash cows and if they are going to be losing billions in taxation from fuel sale with EVs how are they going to raise that ? Usual BS from all of them
The uk is at least 33 power plants short to meet the projected ev sales for 2035. We are building 5 more. Battery makers say it’ll take 329 yrs to meet the demand for ev cars from 2035. Under labour expect about of 7-8 hours of black outs on average.
Just seen your pinned comment and absolutely agree with that. The German car makers are going to suffer the most not only their cars being out priced for the Chinese market but partnerships they have with the Chinese car makers. If EVs are to prosper then this is the last thing they need.
Thanks for the video Jim and offering a balanced perspective. One thing I would add is remember how much money that individual Tory politicians and the Tory party get off oil and gas businesses and the fossil fuel lobbyists. I would suggest that they are their friends not us motorists.
I think it's the same for all of them to be honest, the other lot are just as bad. I had the pleasure of working amount local government for a while and it's no better at that level. Self service and failure is the norm, just make sure you get back in again by any means.
Brilliant insight... Both parties are in power to discredit each other whilst allowing the country to go down the toilet.... MORE REASONS to subscribe to this channel. With facts as clear as that what is not to like?
From what I see if you can’t access a home charger then it can easily work out more expensive to fill your EV. Make having an ev attractive by getting some control over the high pricing of charging at public chargers. I mean I can get 44p at my Tesco but would have to sit there for over four hours. 85p at fast charger is robbery
Production in this country is what we need, what goes against that is wages and industrial action. Are people prepared to pay the extra? We have already seen that the answer to foreign competition is to tax it, which doesn’t help the buyer.
I think we should impose import tariffs based on production emmissions, health and safety standards etc. That would create a more level playing field & give foreign producers more of an incentive to start playing by the more widely recognised rules. More carrot, less stick.
Labour have said they would change planning rules, so hopefully more charging. Although we need pressure to bring costs down, if Tesla can do it, others should also. As you noted, without importing from Russia or similar, all new cars will be BEV by 2030 because the UK market is small, and it would be uneconomic for manufacturing to produce RWD and ICE for the UK. So unless carmakers have fields full of old unsold ICE cars to offload, it will all be BEV. It is also noticeable that Conservatives are promising to turn back imaginary road-charging, which no party has put forward, mainly because of the difficulty making this work. The 20mph limit in Wales has saved lives. Purely related to cost, signs making and fitting is expensive to have multiple speed limits rather than a blanket limit. Switching the 30 > 20mph signs is cheaper than numerous new signs in towns.
It was a Tory transport secretary that talked about per mile charging at one stage. Possibly Shapps (or whatever name he was using at the time). I think we just have to remember that very little of what any of them say will be delivered, and of course none of it will be delivered quickly.
I don't believe any of them if honest they can all promise we'll do this and that and never actually get round to it.. like you said starmer was asked a question and never directly answers it.
For the sake of posterity, we need to stop burning stuff to get from A to B. So, for me, Labour are preferable to the Tories but there’s not much in it.
Lots of incredibly wonderful promises from the Conservatives right now, given their position in the poles. Just one question. They've *already* had 14 years, so why all the promises and pledges now? They have lost the trust of millions of people. Not that I see anything marvellous coming from any of the others..... Whoever gains power, the reality is that motoring is likely to cost more - not less - in the years ahead. And this utopian dream, where we all travel around on low cost, conveniently available public transport, is simply pie in the sky......
I can with a great deal of certainty say that whoever the next prime minister is, they will be a question dodging liar. Parliament is like a clown club.
I am surprised that you would infer that we cannot trust the words of our politicians!! Next you will be telling us that the moon is not made of cheese!
Fantastic content as always. Just a quick question. Plenty examples of new ev’s that have depreciated loads in 2-3 yrs. If I bought one of these would you expect it to depreciate much further ? Thx
Depends on the car but I feel like a lot of the used stuff has reached its natural level now. I wouldn’t expect many EVs to now depreciate more than any other car does. It will take a long time for a £15k tesla model 3 to get down to £10k I think.
Imthe Honda jazz is most often owned and driven by older folks. For this to be properly indicative it should be millage adjusted. So many jazz are serviced every year at Honda and only driven 2k miles in between. I got a mint 2014 jazz with 30k miles on the clock 9honda stamps in the book!!
Our problem is we all want ‘cheap’ without thinking about the long-term implications. So you want a cheap electric car to help reduce the impact of global warming and you are happy for this car to be made and imported from the largest polluting country on the planet that is responsible for 33% of all the world’s total pollution. And thanks for a desire for cheap products It has an enormous export market, which has seen its industry grow to become a serious danger to the planet. In just five provinces, which host most of these industries, more dioxide is emitted than in any other country in the world, and has been since 2006. It is a world leader fossil fuel burning, Air Pollution, Water Pollution and the largest producer and consumer of plastics. It refuses to recognise any international agreements on climate change and has no respect for anything or anyone that doesn’t agree with them. But hey! at least I have a cheap car…Wake up everyone, It makes no sense. I see these tariffs as a first stage in reducing our over reliance on China and think they should be applauded.
