This channel is all about the fun of buying cars, driving cars, collecting cars... and now also converting cars, better say converting a Mercedes Benz 310 T1 fire truck into a camper van, a real overlander for travelling around the world. This van build project is completely DIY, but we plan to use high quality components which might not be the usual pick for an old van like this T1.
If you are interested to sponsor this project with your product, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Great series on the T1! The electrics are specifically neatly done! Thanks for documenting your project. Now that we a re year into this, perhaps you could do a review video with what works well and what might need a little update in the van build?
Hello Mike, my compliments on the great van build! I see you “ground” the MPPT on the minus distribution block. Is this distribution block itself then “grounded” on the chassis of the van? I don’t see that in your wiring diagram.
Yes, it is. It's not in the diagram because the minus distribution block is just connected with the minus of the engine's battery. But this battery minus is connected with the chassis as standard Mercedes layout.
@@CubeofCars Thanks for the quick Reply! I understand. Otherwise the (non-isolated) Orion probably would'nt work either. I also see a (yellow/green) earth cable going to the minus distribution block. Is this from the 230v and/or Multiplus? Shouldn't that be a seperate 230v ground point on the chassis, seperate from the 12v chassis ground point?
@@frisovdm6132 That's ground for the 230V FI/LS circuit breaker. I haven't included details of the 230V system in the video, because it's a job for professionals. So I don't wanna give any recommendations how to wire the 230V system :)
Awesome sound! Congrats for the video and the story telling, finally also for the italian original frames. The passenger door button to open from the driver side was requested by Agnelli himself, thinking to be gentleman with a girl / woman
HI , SIR , CAN'T YOU TRY TO FIND IF THERE IS STILL AVAILABLE TO FIND ANY LANCIA - MONTE CARLO MID ENGINE REAR WHEELS DRIVE SPORTS CAR SEEN IN 1979 IN HONG KONG . JOHN PUN IN MESSENGER HONG KONG .
I know this thread is over a year old and you are probably out traveling the world. What overall standing height did you end up with in the van? Thanks for all your work.
Hi Mike. Great video. I live at a town called Gerringong about an hour and half south of Sydney. My Autoterm Diesel heater arrived today and will start installing it in our new Zone RV Sojourn tomorrow. Watching the video gives me a better understanding of the install. Great work. Cheers Ross.
Interesting propane cabinet and nice to know about the 100 square cm requirement for the vent. If in an extreme temperature environment I wonder if it might pay to insulate that box. In any case, propane seems like a reasonable choice for cooking fuel as long as there's some good air flow with the outside and CO detectors. I'm just thinking of my build if I should choose do it later in life. Sure would be nice to work remotely, part time or otherwise, from varied, beautiful locations and follow the weather: such as the desert US southwest in winter and cooler places in summer.
Hey, saubere Arbeit.
Nice review! I had owned a '71 124 Sport Coupe - my most fun car ever - but wasn't familiar with the 130. Loved the video clips - and the cows. Thanks for putting this together!

Thanks for your videos. I just bought myself a Mercedes 310, but the van is so well mantained & has a very nice aliuminium floor, so i was wondering if i could let the floor in the van ( 2 x multiplex 10mm + aluminium 2mm ) , but i would do the walls & ceiling with armaflex. So everything except the floor, should that be OK?
very nice finish on the timber. it is good to see someone taking the weight of the material used into account for the overall weight at the end of the build
Thanks for explaining the different models/types. I have a (rusty) 207D. I have a question about the turn knob above the pull knob (pull knob is preheat and starter motor). But the turn knob, how should it be used? Too far left or right, and the engine starts to shake wildly. But there's a pretty big range in which the engine runs smooth so wherein this range should the knob be? in the middle, or as far to the left as possible with a engine still running smooth? or as far as possible to the right with a smooth running engine? Also, does this knob affect mileage (does it make the engine run rich or lean I mean)? Thank you for the video and for a reply.
My van doesn't have this idle speed adjuster knob. It's meant to increase idle speed when the engine is cold (by turning it left). When the engine is warm, idle speed can be reduced to a level that the engine runs smoothly.
Awesome video! I installed the Alb Travel Fusion just like you in my Hymer, but I have a submersible pump (Reich PowerJet plus, 2.1bar, 25L/min) and I'm not really happy with the results, the water pressure is just not that great and it feels like the pump is working too hard. In fact I've already had to replace it once because it broke... So I'm thinking of also installing the Lilie pump just like you here. Question though: can the Lilie pump also be operated using the microswitches that I have in my current water taps? Or is it better do you think to forget about the microswitches, and use the Lilie pump with the integrated pressure switch? Thanks!
I would not use the microswitches. Just install a normal on/off switch, so you can deactivate the pump when you are not in the van. Having this avoids flooding your van in case of a broken pipe/connection.
@@CubeofCars Thanks for the reply. Yeah I also have a "master" on/off switch for the pump, but then additionally also microswitches in the taps. But since the Lilie pump uses a pressure switch I think best would be to just forget about the microswitches alltogether...
Dein Video Video hilft mir sehr! Was denkst du?
Yes, it's round, but from the same series like the square ones... www.smt-montagetechnik.de/produkte/1302n.htm It's more for design reasons that I wanted to have it, not really necessary :)
I have a T1 1080 James Cook, 307D, fully built. We have been looking for a reputable repair shop in Southern Germany, as we do not have space where we live, to help us. Does anyone have any suggestions on where we could take our beloved van. Thank you in advance.
