The architecture photography RU-vid channel of James Kerwin, an architecture, interior, and travel photographer from The UK, that is now based in Istanbul. I am hunting out relics, ruins, and heritage architecture around the world.
Join me on the behind-the-scenes story of photographing some very special architectural locations around the world. www.jameskerwin.uk
You touched on a subject that is probably still my achilles heel James and that is taking too many images. Tends to happen more when using zoom lenses as I will change the focal length when capturing an image and as a result end up with more images than needed. The tilt-shifts have made me more selective and slows me down more and one of the reasons I use them as much as I can these days. In terms of your image choices this week, I quite liked the first horizontal image as I think it allowed the recessed area to have more prominence as the walls coming in from the left and right in the main floor area create a feeling of space then the recess emphasised the depth. Hope the temperatures have came down a bit for you. Was in London last week shooting architecture and it was in the high 20s and humid so can only imagine how it must have been for you with the temperatures you highlighted
Crazy heat wave it has been across the entire region for weeks and weeks now. I knew it was going to be a hot summer, when I ran my Romania trip in April - we were all expecting Spring weather and it was in the late 20s the full 8 days, a sign of intent for sure!
I think I prefer the 17mm shot to the 24. And, i would have liked to make more of the roundal light on the wall but, that's me. On the farmhouse. Rather than crop the sensor, you could have used tge 1.4 extender. Just a thought.
I think I cut that bit from the video - I left it back in Istanbul for the "holiday" trying to save a little weight - typically I needed it. 100% it would be better to use an extender - no crop.
Man you are soaking there. I think both of the images look good in their own right. I like that expansive opening from the landscape version raising from inside the sanctuary out into the wide. Definitely. I also like the horizontal one, I like the soaring (crack in the) ceiling going into an exceeding expanse. Both of the images work. I was in Croatia down the coastline. What is your impression of Bosnia, or do you have any?
Cheers for watching Dan. And yeah - honestly humid weather, thankfully cooled off a bit while recording. Thirsty work indeed! Cheers for watching by the way and for the image feedback. I only spent a matter of 48 hours or so total in Bosnia. But I must say the landscapes are pretty spectacular - we stayed in Mostar on the drive to Montenegro (which is touristy of course but nice) but further East, the main route from Kotor to Sarajevo is stunning. Some of this will be on the channel next April now too - check next weeks video for more images and feedback. I really liked Montenegro too. 😊
I've told my Rijeka photo friends about your Rijeka videos, and you wouldn't believe the first question they came up with. They wanted to know whether you had a permit to fly the drone. 😆😂🤣
@FerdoFulgosi it's a good question. In those two videos, I believe there is only 1 clip or 2. In the others more - I actually used stock video clips for some of the seascape and city ones from Artlist (I have a subscription) and the rural ones were from my own drone (where nobody cared as I was in the middle of nowhere). 😊
Love an old chapel and the colours are amazing, one added to my map if i ever go there.. as.for.seing on the channel what about some blogs behind the scene on the tours ? Like pov style as you walking round talking to the people and helping them asl about what they like about the style and how they got into it ?
I am curious about the all-seeing eye in the triangle on the ceiling. I have never before seen this in a religious context. Any chance of a copy of the image?
In late Renaissance European iconography, the Eye, surrounded by a triangle, was an explicit symbol of the Christian Holy Trinity. It dates back to the 8th century - perhaps present here as it is rural and those traditions were passed on.
Yes it would - if you don’t own Canon. It is so weird and unreliable / disconnects etc. Talking of canon - Amazon UK had a selection of Canon R8s this morning for sale (new) for £799 for Prime Day. Insane value - I went back on a few hours later to buy it - the limited number had been sold out.
@@JamesKerwin Having just watched the launch and truly spectacular as the R1 and R5 MkII are they are not relevant to me as a 78 year old enthusiast. My 1DX MkII covers wildlife and my R covers landscapes so only new lenses are truly attractive to me :)
Shame about the construction work James but for the images you did manage to capture the splendour is very much evident. The image with the column in it at the beginning of your video still worked well, as well as giving it depth it also contributed to giving it dimension too. The articulating screen certainly came in handy with the positions you were having to adopt in order to capture the image.
@@JamesKerwin thought all the images were great as there was a real character to the entrance and stairs and hopefully if you return you get to see it in all its glory
Another great video. Never thought that CPL can have such great effect on interior shots. James, would you mind sharing which cpl filter you are currently using? Thanks.
Hmmm, can’t argue about the solidity and build quality as I haven’t owned one but using a plastic adjuster on a metal spline for the plate mount release/ tensioning doesn’t bode well in my opinion! Also noted quite a few people have looseness issues in all the movements fairly quickly! I just don’t think the build quality is there especially if used in outdoors conditions!
I mean this review is super old by this point firstly. Secondly - for thw price it's still one of the better ones around. Even now, my current one was double the price the sunwayfoto gh pro ii and as I said in that video - I wouldn't recommend that. So many just wobble at any price point - the benro doesn't, that's the key part.
Yeah I found in Croatia everyone is packed in the same 4 towns on the coast, outside of their the place is packed with potential. Appreciate the feedback 🙏
Also - it always makes me laugh. I aim for quiet locations for sound quality. But you can guarantee the minute I press record, something kicks off. The Power drill, the car horn, the DIY. There is a part here where someone started drilling and banging, and I had to cut it out. Always makes me mad at the time, and I laugh afterwards. 😅
Mate it's awesome that you had that location completely to yourself. Not much happening in the sky but that building is awesome! The main shot at 09:30 is killer. I feel like it would look great in B&W too. Good stuff dude!
It's a must do spot fella. Nobody goes there - with the group there were some people when we first arrived, but an hour later - nobody. And yeah, same on the return - which always helps with the video making. Also - yeah, black & white perhaps. But after the black & white video flopped - I went back to my roots 😅
Well worth the trek back to see the inside. On the whole, I'm pleased that these locations are not overrun and are preserved(?) since they show the life of a country that is sadly no longer in vogue and is disappearing. Great interior, and interesting tip about your own shadow influencing the images
James, per usual, another great vid. A couple of things you mentioned resonated. First, the “humility” mindset. Confession: I’d take my rig into situations where I was, honestly, oblivious to those around me as I fought the light, fatigue, heat, cold, rain, hunger, aggravation, the technicals-and me, to eventually get the shot. But in so doing (then), I was making it harder for other photographers who may ever follow in those spaces (and elsewhere)-and in general. I don’t do all that now. Today, shooting is for me and others, a more relaxed interaction. The second point: as an urban landscaper, I too aspire to color, as & when artistically best. Otherwise, I know I can gear shift to B&W and the composition may well come to life in a special way. B&W is for me, a practical, relatable mode, a wonderful “place”. Here, your B&W shots inspire and your techniques are bang on. Perfect timing for me as I head out the door, back to Europe. Take care. Great work; keep it coming. 👍🏽
That's a brilliant little find, I always try to do a few locations while away I've either seen on Google maps or as I am driving along sometimes it's a dead end but the odd time you find a little gem it's a massive boost.. Video wise I am enjoy the way they are I've got myself a little mavic mini ready for my Italy trip to give a different angle in external pics also in different locations..
Cheers for the feedback again dude. It's been weird - this series just seems to be flopping, all youtube wants to promote seems to be gear gear gear videos. I might knock the education on the head at some point. Edge towards the entertainment route - Thoughts?
@@JamesKerwin I know a few that have been struggling with RU-vid they are all going down the route of Facebook monetisation now.. I like the way your doing things but others have different tastes.. I don't get much traffic on insta or facebook but if i did the goon videos like alot of the urbex lot do I would have double but it's not me, past two years since I found your channel ive changed I love architecture side more so that's why I am more into old empty villas and religious buildings but I will do the odd tidy furnished villa if one comes up.. maybe Facebook is the way iam not sure.. just stay true to yourself
@@JamesKerwin To me that direction would be a shame.... Having had the privilege of spending time with you on location, inspired is definitely the word to use.
@Bimmly It's a lot of work (and expensive) to keep travelling to produce these videos, I was just hoping for a little more of them to stick - but feels very much like I am up against "the landscape photography" crowd. I almost feel like I am too niche at times. But I will watch how the rest of the Balkans series goes, we have another 5 videos yet! 😊
I have never used the Sony - but it has great reviews too. You can't go wrong with full frame tbh. Not sure what you are going to shoot - but canon lenses are superb for interiors.
Another great video! I love black and white! I'm currently working with a 90 year old camera and black and white Ilford film, I have no idea how the photos will turn out. Cheers James 👍
@@JamesKerwin - Thanks James! Maybe you'll see the photos the next time you come to Pula, I'll pay for the beer, I'd like to show you some places too... Cheers!
So so sorry for pulling the previous upload. There was a very weird sound error that occurred upon upload that I had to correct. I have no idea what happened!
Wonderful location, lotsd for you to work with and when you had the person in the image they were just in the right place. Sure in the UK H&S would have demanded higher bannisters 🙂
