Growing orchids in Jamaica aim is to highlight my orchid adventure in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Living in a tropical country provides an advantage in growing orchids. We can grow orchids outdoor all year round and therefore there is always orchids blooming in the garden. We have lots of orchids in the wild (native orchids) and I will also highlight some of those. I will start by showing my orchid garden, my greenhouse setup and displays. I will also share with you tips that will help to get beautiful blooms. Are you in Jamaica? I use locally manufactured fertilizers. Most fertilizers are made up of 3 macro nutrients, nitrogen (N ), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) (NPK). When you are unsure of how to manipulate the fertilizers, it is best to use a balance one such as 20-20-20. This contains 20% of each nutrients NPK. I find that it's more about your care routine, than the brand of fertilizer you use. I do have other videos which shows how I fertilize my orchids. Beautiful orchids. I wondered about rain. I only have two orchid plants which I put outside for the summer months. I had them undercover but recently put them in the rain. Rain water always makes my regular plants flourish but I am worried about root rot on the orchids.

Thank you for this very informative and educational video on Oncidiums, especially the Twinkles. I live on the East Coast of South Africa and our climate (tropical and lots of humidity) is very much like Jamaica. I visited Jamaica, Montego Bay in the late 70's and your climate was very similar to ours here in Durban. I was very reluctantly given (after a great deal of begging) three small rhizomes of Oncidium Dancing Lady from a lady. This plant was performing like a champion. It was mounted in a tree. I brought it home(approximately 20 years ago and it has been the most resilient and perfectly performing orchid in my whole garden, even when I fell ill and was unable to look after my poor suffering orchids for about 2 years she still pushed on and gave me magnificent shows relying only on rain water and fresh air and shade in the garden. She had multiplied at least 100 fold. I am now thinking of repotting some of the rhizomes into smaller pots, selling them and then I can spend the profits on some new Oncidium Twinkles etc, What a lovely reward for me having taken care of the original plant for +/- 20 years! I consider this my best Buddy in my whole garden. Thank you for your lovely video. I can tell you love your orchids just by your tone of voice and the way your seem to care passionately for them. Hello Joan, so good to have you visiting from South Africa both literally and virtually. Yes these dancing once they like where you have them, will reward you unconditionally. I find that they do very well mounted or hanging. Yes you are correct, I am passionate about growing orchids, I just need more time or help to maintain my garden.
