I am just trying to keep as many of these old Yamahas on the road and out of the crusher as possible. I am learning along the way and passing the knowledge on to you as well.

I have an '82 Maxim that I thought needed a new switch. I got one on ebay, maybe the same kind you got and I also got a new battery. The new switch had a 3 pin connector the old one had a 3 pin and a 2 pin! I installed it anyway, and I got a new battery just in case. Got it to start on the 3 pin only! Battery light on the dash is on, and the bike won't re-start if the handlebars are at a certain angle. So I have a short somewhere, it is a 42 year old bike afterall. I didn't use the bike since 2022 as I tackled cancer in 23 so there may be other issues from sitting an extra year. Thanks for the video.

Good trick for air screw setting. OR maybe backfiring is an issue with mixture control valve (pressure release)? I also noticed there is no Breather pipe given on your 81' model's front cylinder head but on rear, I have it on my front cylinder. Never understood why Breather pipe and mixture control valve both are given on front cylinder of my 82' XV750.🤔

Had to clean and rebuild the entire braking system on my 81 XS1100. It was all full of rusty crud and most of the seals were bad. The bleeders being completely plugged with rusty crud was the first indication then the callipers leaking at the piston seals was the second.

Many newer high performance bikes call for Dot 4 brake fluid but these old Yamahas call for Dot 3

Hi, there was a single centre slot on each OEM pads inner side, you have repaled with new without a slot. I myself rebulding my 82' XV750 caliper and replacing new pads similer without slot, does slot have any importence? Exelent video, thanks.
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995 10 месяцев назад
That center slot is a "wear indicator". It lets you know that once the slot has vanished that it is time to change your pads. Not all aftermarket pads have this slot, but a visual inspection of the pad should let you know whether it is time to change them or not. Also, sometimes the slot is also used to allow small pieces of the brake pad that have been loosened/removed by friction to be able to leave the brake area more easily. Lastly, some brake manufacturers state that the slots are used to lower the "frequency" of the brakes to reduce squeal or brake noise. I haven't noticed any difference in sound between my slotted and unslotted pads. Thanks!

I got back at this problem im having with the clutch, bought a 920 virago special same year 10k milage last year but my job kept me from getting to far into the project, but i found some delemas after pushing the starter gear in( to screw the alternator magnets in) difficult.. i found out how the clutch pedal spring system works out, someone didn't put on right., but i cant get the clutch doesnt disengage in fact its limp, too the other side off the see whats in there... And im lost with several question in mind, but aside from new clutch plates im lost still haven't ordered a manuel im jist getting to it hear and there, got a carb miss when purchased and i stinhabe no clue how to line the vaccum tubes, but other than that ist got a few rusty tips or metal on the tank and around the extremities, im about to just break down and cheat with the manuel, theres a video on youtube or the same cutch problem inhave alot of people did something to these bike and i bought one lol make me feel like its not a lost cause, videos you made were fun to see our differences in used problems, so far it turns over but no action, its egging me threw my times

I have a 1980 3 cylinder 850. The ignition unit has been replaced. Turns over good but the spark seems weak. I s there a after market ignition for them???
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995 11 месяцев назад
There are some aftermarket ones, but they are quite pricey. For example: www.elektronik-sachse.de/shopsystem-3/en/digital-ignition-zdg-3-32-for-yamaha-xs750-850.html . My advise, would be to try and find a OEM used one off of eBay. Also, you can check the coil wires as well to ensure they have no breaks in them..etc.

Hey i got a question about the clutch pedal actuation beside the alternator towards the back, mostly obvious how the springs line up except the small arm* with a spinning disc attached to it plus the spring behind it... i cant seem to figure out what it trigers... if know it would be mich appreciated, cant wait to get mine running, there always room for a two seater twin in the garage!

Do you have to change something else for the rear brakes? I know you change the rotors and brake pads on the front one bc the pads wear on the rotor but what does the rear wear on?

I have an 80 xs850 just like this one but in blue. Didn't start it for about a month and found that the engine was seized. The bike is kick only, and just like this one, the kick lever won't turn. Hoping to get it unseized before the end of summer.
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995
Follow what I did with the Marvel Mystery Oil and I think you will be good to go! :) A lot of these old bikes get ring ridges on the cylinders from being dormant for so long. Good luck and let me know your progress!

Sorry i missed a few words when i take the choke off it dies
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995
@@reneguay1347 Check to see that the jets in the carbs aren't plugged/gummed up. This happens with a lot of bikes that sit. You can use a high E (smallest guitar string on a 6 string guitar) and poke it through the jets to clear out any obstruction. Good luck and thanks!
@EldonBeix

UMM - I think you should be working on the carb that is firing instead of the one that has the plug pulled. You can turn the Idle air screw until hell won't have it on the dead Cylinder and it will not make one iota of difference to engine speed.
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995
"Dead Cylinder Method" has been used by several people. Some people use a dummy plug. You can read more about it here: (Yes, I realize it is on an XS forum, I also have an Xs850 3 cylinder that I am restoring) www.xs650.com/threads/dead-cylinder-method-for-carb-setting.49892/

What tool arr you using to screw/unscrew? Im having a hard time with what i have om hand. The placement is not super friendly lol
@vintageyamahabackyardresto4995
Hi.. I am using a Philips screw bit and a 1/4" boxed end wrench. The bit should fit right in the boxed in side and you can twist that way (some bits are 3/16", so you may need a 3/16" wrench if yours is bigger) Thanks for writing!
