Some of those jackfruit have reached a very impressive size! It still surprises me what you can grow there. Hopefully, they will make it to maturity 🤞. I'm having a go at growing a jackfruit. I managed to get a grafted plant, although it's very small. I also have a couple of seedlings growing as well. I'm growing them in my greenhouse, although I'm not sure whether to bring them indoors for winter or leave them in the greenhouse with the citrus trees. I'm wondering what temperatures they can tolerate over winter? I heat the greenhouse when cold temperatures are predicted to keep it a few degrees above freezing so around 3 or 4°C, do you think that would be enough or would it need to be kept warmer than that? Sometimes we get mild spells where it stays between 5 and 12°C in the winter months so I won't need to heat then. The last time I had a seedling jackfruit indoors it didn't last very long, I'm assuming it was the low light and humidity that affected it.

Hi Peter, my tree is in a very sheltered spot where it gets good sun for most of the day. The lowest temperature that we have had is 4 degrees, it doesn't get too hot usually staying around the 27 degrees in Summer but its very humid with the heat. I left the seedlings that I grew from seeds outside and they are not looking good, but notice once Spring comes new leaves and growth will happen. We did an air layer cutting from the tree and I have placed this in the main fruit forest part of the garden, its producing new leaves and seems happy enough. I am hoping it will like that spot so that we will have another Jackfruit tree on the property. We are also in town so don't get any frosts, just lots of rain lol. Personally I would take your trees inside in winter until they have grown a bit.

It's great to see most things are doing well 👍. Wow, those jackfruit are very impressive! What kind of temperatures do you have to deal with there over winter?

Hi Peter, are lowest temperature is about 4 degrees but that Jackfruit is in a very sheltered spot and gets all day sun. I'm quite hopefully that they will fully mature this year as the previous years one didn't as it was too wet.

Nice look around the garden! It's great to see so many fruits starting to ripen up. Looks like it is going to be a bumper year for the citrus and custard apples. The bananas that you said were plantains look like they might be Orinoco bananas. They are usually used in cooking but can be eaten like a regular banana when very ripe. Your other bananas look a bit like Namwah, but not easy to tell without seeing them closer up. I really like Namwah bananas, very sweet and better than the regular Cavendish from the supermarket.
@Muckingaround-NZ
@Muckingaround-NZ 5 месяцев назад
Hi Peter, yes they do look like the Orinoco images it would be nice to know what variety they are. This garden was planted by a nurseryman about 20 years ago but unfortunately no labels or plant plan has been passed on. When we cut the other Banana's Ill try and get a closer shot for you. Happy gardening.

That's a shame, have you got any later blooming peaches or plums that might save the day. Turns out I had to cut the other bunch of Banana's as the stem had snapped, but going to try ripening that bunch inside. Back to sunshine now. :)
@oldgoatsgarden4897
@oldgoatsgarden4897 5 месяцев назад
@Muckingaround-NZ pretty much everything blooms at once here, peach blossoms started to swell in January and then it dropped down to -20c, plums started to bloom and then had a -5c one night. It does look like pears, apples and cherries should be good and it's a little early to see how the grapes, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries will do. The paw paw trees are just loaded with flowers too, now all I need is their pollinators to show up. Too bad about the banana, hopefully it will ripen for you. Glad that you're back in the sunshine, it reached 31 here today, way above normal, and badly in need of some rain, sheep pasture isn't growing very good yet and hay supply is starting to get short.

I love your garden, your dragonfruit is doing really well. Did you grow it from seed or was it a cutting? I am very impressed with your large jackfruit tree too! And your starfruit tree looks very happy. It's a real struggle to grow those tropicals here in the UK.
@Muckingaround-NZ
@Muckingaround-NZ 8 месяцев назад
Thanks Peter, bought the dragon fruit as a cutting, there are two varieties there (Red and White) I do have a yellow one but its only quite small in comparison. The Jackfruit was on the property when we bought it and think its over 20 years old. The Starfruit was tiny when we bought it (less than 10cm) , I was really happy it survived the winter outside. Whangarei (North Island) is sub-tropical so we can grow these plants here its so great, previously lived in the South Island of NZ and you cant grow these down there.
@PeterEntwistle
@PeterEntwistle 8 месяцев назад
@@Muckingaround-NZ Oh nice! I haven't been able to get named varieties of dragonfruit here so I grew some from seed. One I've had since 2012, but it really needs repotting. Yeah, I remember seeing a map that showed where New Zealand would be if it was in the northern hemisphere. The North Island would be roughly where Spain is, so that helped me get a better idea of the climate, although I know Spain gets dryer weather than NZ.
