I rebuilt a Coleman Powermate 5750 that I found in my grandfather's garage last week. He said "If you can fix it; you can have it." I haven't tested it with a load yet. I just hope it can handle my 180' deep well pump. Tip with the Ex27 engine: If it won't stay running, replace or unplug the low oil sensor. (orange wire going to the cutoff switch)
Diesel generators and the conundrum of being used as a emergency power source. The thing is the generator needs to be rated to handle big startup loads like water pumps air conditioning but a lot of the time it's running at less than 10% of its capacity so you get the wet stacking problem. My solution was to use the diesel generator to charge batteries which run an inverter that also get charged with solar panels. The generator only runs when there is insufficient solar and foot for several days in a row but the generator runs at near full capacity so it gets up to full temperature and alleviates any problems with wet stacking.
Awsome videos and restoration work! So wondering if you can help answer. What kinds of thd are you getting and also what kind of voltage spike are you getting when a large load is dropped off the generator. How high does the voltage spike?
I have a MEP-003A Onan generator and sure would like to know where you are finding engine parts. I've got an oil pump with the gear broke off and can't find one.
Hey Johnny, what kind of transfer switches are you using to alternate between your big gen (djc) and the smaller backup unit? Love your videos (from Nova Scotia)!] Thanks!
Hi Jeffanthony5434 - I home brewed "generator switch box" to alternate between the DJC and JB. The main switch is from an Onan OT 70 ATS, but everything else is pieced together. The generator switch can be wirelessly switched up to 100 feet using a key fob. My house is 50 feet away from the generator room.
@jjjj-uf4bw thank you! Your garage full of sets makes me jealous every time I see it! I tried to make a deal on a 12 kw djc but it was about 12 hours from here and he sold it just before I got ahold of him.
What part numbers are you using for both the preheated and the glow plug? I have several 12djc units that the plugs and preheated are all fried on and can't find numbers on them
I have a jc propane 15kw was running great now won’t start would love some insight the over crank lights up on its own after you reset it and not trying to start at all
I know this is an old video, but did you ever do a video on the little panel you made up with the amp meters? I'd love to see that in detail, its really awesome!
Nicely Done! I love the air cooled Onan diesels, I own a single cylinder version I restored from being stuck from decades of sitting outside under tarps. Mine is unbelievable on how little fuel they burn but it is a single cylinder, I'm sure the twin is a little more thirsty than the single? But it is definitely much smoother without the 3 dead strokes of the single @1800 rpms. But Onan knew this was a problem with the singles and put a boost cap in the field circuit to increase the output on the 3 dead strokes knowing the rpms would drop off a little bit. They had a particular name for the cap and points system they used for that. But I forget that by now Lol.
I picked up a 5.5kva genset that hasn't run for 12 years and in its 1000 hours it hardly got loaded. I loaded it up with 3kw and man sparks and junk flew out the exhaust pipe, it glowed bright yellow looking in there and had a flame coming out once it was shut down. That's a bad case of wet stacking where the stuff stacked layer upon layer. Now i gotta run it for several hours loaded to clean it out. I might post up a vid of it.
Brand new, out of the box mine would not stay running for more than 5 seconds. Fresh gas, fresh oil, tried every trick in the book but after 30-plus attempts I finally called their 1-800 customer service number. Was immediately informed that the units are made in China and that during shipping sometimes sediment can find its way into the carb preventing continuous fuel flow. The way they told me that right away seems to imply that it’s been a common problem. They said I should remove the carb, disassemble and clean it. Yeah right. Option two was to spray carb cleaner then starting fluid into it but that was a long shot for success. Don’t roll the dice on this thing. Spend a few more bucks and hopefully get something better. I took mine back, they can play carborator mechanic with it.
Wet stacking is common on diesel generators and other diesel engines that idle or run unloaded for long periods of time. It is a result of low cylinder pressures that allow lubricant oil to bypass the rings because the rings exert less pressure against the cylinder walls. This is especially a problem on air cooled diesels as they have difficulty getting up to operating temperature without sufficient load. Diesels like to have between 70% and 100% load. That’s where they are most efficient. Long idling and low loads can eventually cause stuck rings and glazed cylinder walls. I used to work on locomotives that spent many hours at idle. As part of normal maintenance several times a year, we cleaned out the soot traps in the exhaust manifold. Usually get a 5 gallon bucket full of heavy oily soot, caused by wet stacking. Ocassionally when running a locomotive hard, all that junk would catch fire in the manifold and we’d have flames out the stack!
Holy CRAP Johnny C!! You’ve had that Jeep forever. That and the countless Onans it has helped recover. Thankfully, you had it parked outside so it didn’t pose a threat to your house or garages
If I parked in the garage, it would have burned down the garage along with my much newer Highlander and my 1964 Ford Falcon and a Corvette in the attached garage along with thousands in tools.
