Just found your channel. My uncle had a house on sand point it was near the very end of the point. Back in the 80's we would boat out to the island and have adventures. I used to go in the light house all the time we would have pick nicks on the beach. I know we explored the house to it was in rough shape. Once some of my family took our uncles boat out there. They were gone for quite awhile. Then when the sun was setting my dad, my uncle and myself made our way out there. It was pitch black before we got there but we seen a flare go up. I was useing a flash light to watch for shallow water. Yes there is alot of rocks. We found our family, turns out they were speeding around the island hit a rock and broke the prop. More like destroyed it and damaged the lower unit. So they were waiting by the shore. We towed them back. I remember in the mid to late 90's at my uncle's house you could clearly hear all the construction going on out there. I never knew they were blasting. Somewhere early 2000's we went out there you could see alot of work was done, I seen the little marina. As were Getting close to the entrance somebody on a 4 wheeler came out rather fast and was telling us we were trespassing on private property and we were asked to leave. Thats the last time I was out there. I was a little bummed out but I understand. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thunder Bay s port is big and fairly close to Duluth we have so many salties loading hear now plus the Lakers loading grain oats peas on some days there is up to 10 ocean going salties anchored in Thunder Bay harbour waiting for orders paper work it's quite the busy port and has gotten busyier over the years it's quite the sight at Sun rise calm water out to sleeping giant and the ocean going vessels anchored its makes very nice picture
I didn’t even know this part existed! I was there about a month ago to check out the tornado damage by the park area. Also didn’t know they had nice bathrooms lol!
Wonderful video. My family had a farm in Port Austin since the early 1920s and with all the time I have spent up there I never knew there was an island out there. I hope they open it up again someday because I would love to see it.
Fifth generation Michigander here! My dad grew up in Saginaw and would ice skate across the bay as a kid! Winters must've been a lot colder then! I also had a cousin who tried to take a snowmobile across the bay, but unfortunately, he and his girlfriend went through the ice and drowned. They weren't found till spring.
I have been to the island three times. The first on vacation with my parents at 16 . The second was the day that my husband and I got engaged on the ferry boat coming back from the island after one of the young men in our group presented my husband to be with a horseshoe ring that he bought on the island and announced to the entire ferry, (which was extremely full because it was 5 o’clock and raining) that we wanted to get engaged but couldn’t afford a ring. We went back again on our 25th anniversary and it was wonderful. I wish we lived closer so that we could visit more often.
Great video! I proposed to my wife on the ferry, at sunset, coming home from the island. We returned for our 25th anniversary a few years back. I have always wanted to visit the island over New Years, or at least in the off-season. Thank you for this glimpse of the possibilities!
When I was a kid my uncle had a place on Burt Lake and we use to go to Cheboygan all the time. My parents took a boat to Mackinac Island a couple of times.
when i was a kid we got stuck on little charity island for a few days , our boat broke down and we were stuck until we floated out another boat saw our distress. we ate alot of perch cooked on a camp fire
Really enjoyed this video, I subscribed! We used to go perch fishing near there also, beautiful shallow waters. Also heard the island was full of snakes...never stepped foot on it though my family has, and have pictures of the the old house. Neat! Thank you!
You made a mistake a lot of RU-vid posters make. When beginning a video about geography, start with a clear, understandable graph of the larger geography. Hold it, so the viewers can understand the relationships between the larger picture and the smaller place of the topic. Start with a zoomed out shot of Lake Michigan, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa. Hold for several seconds. Then slowly zoom in to the geography or island of the video. Never rush the beginning of the video.
Nice. Thanks for the history. I hope to get up to Duluth for a visit after I retire… or maybe before! It looks like a really relaxing place to live. 🤗🥰🙌👍
