Hi Kenneth, I always enjoy your gear videos. I just got home from a 3-weeks bikepacking trip in Iceland where I brought a bunch of gear I purchased from your store. Among these a Nordisk Telemark 2.2 tent. The tent have been surprisingly stable in stormy nights and I enjoyed the all in one pitch as I had to build camp in the rain most of the times. But the material absorbs lot of water which is not fun. I woke up few times with wet sleeping bag and face and had to pack a heavier tent. I am considering purchasing a dyneema tent. This one or the unbound or the durston. The mid1 looks nice since it needs only a pole and 4-5 stakes. Do you reckon there's enough space in the vestibule for 2-3 10L bike bags? Is this design storm-worthy or more like a nice weather tent? Do you find the tent to be too translucent for the summer in the north? Thanks!
I have both and I just spent 5 nights in the Unna. I find that I use it more than the Soulo as its just simpler to set up and take down. Thanks for posting Ken!
The Unna is literally the only tent that will give me some cognitive dissonance regarding my Soulo RL, because of the living space. For long distance solo hikes, I've found my living space plenty though. It's certainly not as if your arms don't fit, when lying inside (at 1.88cm)... I somewhat disagree about the ease of set up. That's wholly dependent on wind, and these are tents for adverse conditions. Not your sunny, only slightly breezy summer holidays. Even with gale force, the Soulo is a relatively easy pitch. Now try that with the Unna when setting up the poles and all of a sudden 'controlling a sail'. There is no comparison in 'ease of set up' for any but decent weather.
I just wish hilleberg would let you choose your inner at check out .. i would love the unna for summer but i have to buy the winter inner then I have to buy the mess inner ..
@@strickostricko yeah i own 9 business over my life time all very successful all make money .. the point is they lose my money because they dont give choice bad business model . Force people to buy accessories they dont want
The Unna has a small "vestibule" - when you peg out the door guyline the space between inner & outer tents increases to easily take a backpack and boots. It's probably the better choice for the majority of backpackers who mostly camp below treeline in winter. For very exposed areas maybe rather Nammatj 2 than Soulo, the latter also having the worst ventilation.
I've already made my choice. Nowadays it's all about comfort for me. In the past I've used the Soulo and Akto. Much prefer the Unna these days. Plenty of headroom to use a Trekkerchair, the luxury of getting changed without having to contort myself, ease of access and exit. All these things start to matter when you reach a certain age. My storm chasing days are over. The Unna can handle anything I'm likely to encounter. I have upgraded to 10 mm poles and I carry some extra guys but I've never had to use them. Fabulous tent. The lack of vestibule isn't an issue for me. You create an adequate vestibule easily enough. Just remember to secure a guy line to your rucksack when pitching. The thing can take off like a kite..... Take care.
I hate to join the chorus of other comments, but it was really tough to hear the review because of the water. I'd love if you would have time to re-shoot this review in a quieter area or with a different mic that catches more of your voice audio.
Tried this shoes, some hard piece was digging into my ankle creating a hotspot. Wearing them for a few km improved situation a bit but still i could feel it..sent back..
Which would you choose between the Exped Thunder 70 and the Osprey Aether Pro 70? You given them both stellar reviews. I would imagine that the Osprey is more comfortable, but the Exped has some more convenience with the mesh pockets and the front loader. I have the Exped lightning 60 but I always find the shoulder straps and waistband uncomfortable, actually I get some bruising from the waistband on long hikes. Cheers 👍
Hi, so what are the updates for this pack? How do shoulder straps perform with heavier weights? Is it easy enough to remove and put back water bottles into side pockets on the go?
This is a very appealing pack given the adjustment and frame. Would you possibly be able to do a comparison video between this latest version and the older version?
@@Backpackinglightse Thank you for responding so quickly - I've just found your video on the older one so shall refer to both videos to see which version suits best. There don't look to be many videos out there on the new version.
And it took 2 mins to connect the call...dropped carrier first time..thats 1 full minute....another to connect...great idea to have the phone but isn't totally reliable and super expensive.
what happens with the pack if i load it over 12kg? Will it feel unproportionally heavier or will the fabric tear, or what will be the problem. You didn t meantened the problem
What is the coldest temp that you would take the portal 1 down to? Considering if it would be a good fit for early November at tree line hiking in Colorado. Expecting a couple inches of snow and temps in the 7-20 degrees at night.
I didn't know there was a shop in Umea... still there? where is it? Do you like th Nick better? Can the Niak handle winds say on the Kungsladen? The Allak and Staika are too big and heavy.. :( Thoughts? I'll try to stop by next time i'm in town...I used to live there!
I just got this backpack and the 1st thing I noticed is how light and thin the fabric is, and that worries me a bit. I fear it would just rip or be caught bit something and rip. I'm even considering returning it for that reason.

Remove guy lines, cut off the loops.. and then figure out another way to mount it? You have many other good videos with a lot of good information, but this old video is just old :)
really depends.. For me probably the windrider 70 as I do a lot of mixed hiking. Winter, three season, packraft, fishing, hunting and so on. The Winder is a much more versatile pack for that. If however I was just doing hiking and maybe just a tenkara rod or something than I would do the Unbound.
I love the unbound 40! It fits perfectly, but forces me to not “overpack” on shorter trips as well. Not sure how long the bottom pocket will last as I tend to really throw around my pack… hoping to not put a hole in it. Nice review!!
Nice video. I have the Unna and like it a lot for winter camping. But for the other three seasons would you rather have a Niak or the Unna with the mesh inner? I suppose my concerns about the Unna with mesh inner for 3 season camping are that it 1) it has less interior space 2) weighs more, and 3) will be hotter than the Niak. On the other hand, the inner is much less costly than a new tent. Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
Thanks for this interesting video. I've used both the Akto and Soulo in the past. Nowadays I have a few mobility issues and find the Unna much more to my liking. I need a tent with ample interior space, plenty of headroom and a large entrance. Needless to say, I'm done with "coffin" tents. The Unna just about ticks all my boxes. I've upgraded to 10 mm poles and also doubled up on the guy lines, so that now the poles can be supported from two different directions. The increase in weight is negligible but the benefits are great. For many people, I suspect, the lack of vestibule is a deal breaker (me included initially). Hilleberg don't do themselves any favours by saying it has no vestibule. The issue is so easily solved. People don't seem to realise that you can, if you so desire, have a large vestibule and still leave ample room to sleep in. For one person that is. Anyway, thanks again.
Yes, I agree.. the Unna was off putting for me for a long time. I have to say I am impressed with it and love the design. If I had to choose between this tent and just about any other freestanding alpine tent I would choose this one. (if weight is not most important factor). Great roomy tent, and I like the flexibility of it.
