My pedals have now arrived and I will be putting them on my trike soon, My question is can you put a spacer extender on the pedal so it a lines your legs and feet and you do not hit the pedal arm?
@EZSteve
@EZSteve 8 дней назад
These pedals are no different from any others as far as using spacers is concerned. That would place the pedals farther out from the crank arms. I have never found any need to use spacers (I am about 5'11" with a 43" X-Seam), but some riders feel a need to have them ... I know Matt Galat was going to try them, but I do not know if the spacers ended up working for him or not. Spacers or no spacers, still be very aware of the traction pins every time you get into and out of the trike! Yes, they will get your ankles farther away from the crank arms if that is what you need. Have you been using spacers on your prior pedals? If you try spacers with these Catalyst pedals, I would recommend keeping the spacers as minimal as possible because with these pedals, you end up placing more power onto the crank arms, and if a spacer is really long, that multiplies the pressure against the crank arm, which was factory designed to be used as is. steve

Hi Steve, I saw your May 2015 post on Trike Frame Weld Failures. I have followed you on Trike Hobo for several years, in part because we rode similar trikes. I've been riding an HP Velo Scorpion FS26 for 2+ years, purchased new here in Virginia in December 2021. Today the frame broke under the seat about 1" from the folding joint. Fortunately I was not injured. Do you know where I might find additional information about trike frame failures? I ride a trike just for safety following two bad bicycle accidents and my confidence in trikes is now shattered. (I would be happy to attach a photo but don't know how).
@EZSteve
@EZSteve 14 дней назад
Hi George, That is unsettling to hear that your HP frame broke! HP is generally considered top of the line in quality and durability. I was very happy with mine, having no issues with cracks, breaks, or weld failures. My bodyweight is only 160 pounds, so that is a factor in my trikes never cracking or breaking in the frame. Heavier riders will naturally put more strain on frames and welds, but if the factory weight limit is followed, even heavier riders should not be causing frame failures (unless a violent road irregularity led to a catastrophic failure around a weld). I seem to recall that the post you reference showed cracks mainly in the area of the foldable frame, and around welds. I recall an ICE trike where the frame cracked where the suspension elastomers pressed against it (not the best design in my opinion), and I also recall an HP that broke near the folding region, on a weld I believe. I am sorry to hear about your HP breaking in the same region! First off, I would definitely contact HP directly through their website. I have found them to be very responsive to questions and problems, probably due to the fact that they produce a high quality vehicle with an excellent reputation, and they don't want to tarnish that perception. I would expect that HP might send you a replacement frame free of charge ... after all, that frame should NOT have broken with normal use! I know a Catrike rider who experienced a cracked frame (his bodyweight may have exceeded the trike load limit), and Catrike did send him a replacement frame at no cost (he had owned the trike for quite a while too, longer than three years. I know that If my HP Scorpion frame had cracked or broken, i certainly would have expected a replacement frame, especially since I am not a heavy rider, and I never hit any significant potholes or other obstacles that would have place unusual extreme stress on the frame. It is just good business for a high-end reputable company to replace broken or cracked frames because it is a minimal insignificant cost to them, and by not replacing a frame free of charge, they create a bad mark on their image! Regarding reference material for more info on these trike frame failures, I have no specific material or sources. At the time when I made that post several years ago, I just scoured the internet until I found several stories by trike owners. I found enough information that I felt it was worthwhile to write that post and share it with others. These were not cheap bargain brand trikes either! They were ICE, HP Velotechnik, and Catrike, so even the best companies have frame failures, which I remember really surprised me at the time. Best of luck on following up with HP directly. I would be VERY interested in what develops!!! I am hopeful that HP will come through, and would be disappointed if they don't make it right (assuming normal trike usage with no weight limit issues or extremely severe road impacts). steve

@@EZSteve Steve thanks for this detailed reply, greatly appreciated. If any of your other subscribers are interested I would be happy to share photos of my broken Scorpion FS26 but don't know how to do this through RU-vid. I weigh 179 pounds and I ride mostly on a paved trail, so rider weight and road hazards should not have been an issue. HP provides a 10-year warranty on their frames and I assume they will send me a new frame, but my confidence in their quality control is a bit diminished. I'm trying to find a trike from a different manufacturer that is non-folding, since it appears to be a weld near the hinge that failed. Due to past bike accidents I cannot safely ride 2-wheels so I'm stuck with trikes. Anyway, your videos are great, love watching them and I learned a lot about trikes. Enjoy the new Sunseeker.

@EZSteve 12 дней назад
Hello George, Yes, folding areas on trikes are a weak spot from what I've seen. Suspension areas can also be weak spots. I am surprised that your frame broke considering your light body weight and the care given to your trike! If you want, you can email me photos of your frame, along with a story that explains it all, and I can post it on my Trike Asylum website so that other trike riders can be informed. Send to: bentrider at gmx com Might I suggest looking into what the Catrike company has to offer. I have owned a Catrike personally, and they are top quality trikes, on a par with other leading manufacturers. My Catrike was a non-folding 700, a single piece frame with the seat as part of the frame (not added on as with ICE and HP Velotechnik), so it is a very strong design. Catrike now offers suspended and folding trikes, so not all of their models are the one piece setup. The Catrike Villager has a non folding frame without suspension, but with an adjustable seat back so you can choose your angle of recline. Here is the Villager link: www.catrike.com/villager They also make a very similar model to the Villager, called the MAX, which is made with extra heavy duty components. It is designed for heavier riders, and has a wider seat among other things, but even though you are a light bodyweight, if you want the epitome in indestructible trikes, the MAX is it. Here is the MAX link: www.catrike.com/max I would not hesitate in getting another Catrike, a reputable manufacturer based in Florida, and they actually make their trikes right there in Florida (made in the USA). I doubt very much that you would ever experience a broken frame with either of these two models! steve

@@EZSteve Agreed, and not just because I own two of them, but I bought Catrike BECAUSE they are quality built American made trikes. Also, there is no import tax/fees that you have to pay on top of the cost of the trike. The VTX ICE is a exceptional trike, but it isn't cheap and with the added import fees, It really pushes the cost to the extreme. Plus...I don't like that the seat is separate on the ICE from the frame. Thus making it not as structurally strong as the Catrike 700 which has the seat tied into the frame. For touring, and adding a rear rack for panniers. The Catrike 700 is a much better trike for that purpose. I realize that 98% of people won't use these trikes for touring. However for the unique, strange and odd rider who does (former Trike Hobo and currently The Green Hornet), the Catrike 700 is much better for this. Regarding attaching my two "Purple Sky" visibility flags, it was nothing fancy at all. I simply used zip ties and black electrician's tape to hold them to the two seat-back cross supports. I did it this way because this bike has no factory means to attach flags, so I had to jury-rig them. But it works fine, and the flags are solidly in place no matter what. I had to attached flags to my HP Scorpion trike using this same method. steve

@EZSteve
@EZSteve 22 дня назад
I have actually done a total of nine videos on these pedals, including the first one when I had just received them in 2022. Check out my "playlists" page on this channel to see them (the playlist is called "Catalyst Full-Foot Support Pedals". I love these pedals because far more power can be delivered to the drive wheel, and going up hills becomes noticeably easier! The ONE THING that you must be VERY aware of when they are on your trike is the 18 pins per side per pedal ... The pins are the key to keeping your feet secure, BUT, if your shins come in contact with them when entering or exiting your trike, IT WILL HURT AND DRAW BLOOD, so please pay close attention when entering or exiting your trike!!! I learned the hard way, and have a scar to show for it. I learned to keep one hand on one of the pedals when exiting (when I smashed my left shin into the left pedal), which reminds me to take my time. Rushing when entering or exiting the trike is NOT recommended. But other than this single caveat, the pedals are extraordinary, and I am very glad I took the chance and bought a pair! steve

Steve, when you rode on your tours going across the Cascades (forget how many times you rode this route. The first time riding to D.V, a second time that was originally planned with your two friends; both of which couldn't finish the tour., was there a third time?), was there always a decent shoulder to ride your trike on, or was the road much of the time shoulderless and a bit sketchy for trike riding with traffic?
@EZSteve
@EZSteve 25 дней назад
Riding over the Cascades on a trike is generally pretty easy, with wide shoulders much of the way, but there are also dicey sections that are not so rider friendly. It all depends upon a rider's tolerance for motorized auto and truck traffic. Some folks would be scared to death. I found it pretty relaxing for the most part. It is so hard to provide opinions on this or that route because of the differences we all have in what is acceptable for safety, and what crosses the line as unsafe. What is considered safe for one would be a nightmare for another. As with any road, there is the entire range of conditions. But one road is pretty dog-gone great overall, and that is US Highway 395, with HUGE shoulders most of the time, and very little really bad areas. Of course, the farther north you go on 395, it's tighter, but from Susanville to Victorville, it's smooth sailing, enough room in many places for two or three trikes riding side by side!! steve

@The-GreenHornet 25 дней назад
@@EZSteve Thanks 👌. Yeah, I understand the variances of what people consider safe and unsafe. I was just wondering about the Cascades through the mountains. I know that 395 hwy is easy, from watching another bicycle tourist on RU-vid years ago. Big Wide shoulders. I don't mind riding on the side of roads, just as long as there's enough space for my trike or to bail out off the road if need be. No shoulder+guardrail or cliff or embankment is sketchy.

I have not done that, but I have heard of others who have, and yes, I am sure it would add some gear range. I would advise contacting Rohloff (rear internal hub manufacturer) to see if that is advisable. I really can't think of a reason such an idea would not work, but I'm no expert with the Rohloff. If they okay the idea, then it would be a fun experiment to try. The derailleur post is already there, so mechanically it seems within reasonable reach. steve

I also noticed your full fat in the video only had one sprocket up front with no e-assist…Did you change out a triple chain ring for a single….because you installed the Rohloff rear hub? On that note is a single up front w/the Rohloff rear enough gearing for the hills AND the flats? FYI…I have read that people have used (just fine) a Rohloff + a Schlumph drive up front + an eassist with some saying it’s fine within a specific sprocket range and others saying it voids the Rohloff warranty as others say the Rohloff is indestructible with a couple of sheer pins that protect the internals against over doing it. Just trying to sort it all out😂.

@@user-wo2rv2kv9d My ICE Full Fat came as shown from the factory, with a single ring in front (about 32 teeth). It strikes an octave lower than the airzound. Definitely something that most people wouldn't do, but it's fun. The biggest drawback I see with any bike, recumbent or otherwise, is you have to balance it. If you're riding up a hill and can't maintain a certain speed, you won't be able to stay upright. At least with a regular bike you can stand up and pedal, with a recumbent you have to rely on the gearing, or you get to push it. I'll stick with my tadpole, comfortable, and no balancing required. I just looked on the Sun website at all their bikes and trikes, and the only model I can locate with an "AX" is a delta trike. No bike the company displays on their website has the "AX" designation that I can see. Regarding this bike, I don't mind the CroMo frame at all, still very light, can pick up the entire bike with one hand and move it around with no problem. The components on it seem like quality items from what I can tell. If Sun is offering another bike like this but with an aluminum frame, they are doing a great job of keeping it a secret, haha. If you have a link to the bike you are describing, please let me know! I'd be interested in seeing it! Thanks. steve

@@outandaboutontherecumbents So far I like it, but LWB bikes do require a learning curve to ride compared to standard bicycles. It's almost like learning how to balance on a bike all over again (practice makes perfect) because the steering is what I would consider "floppy" compared to a normal bike. steve

@EZSteve
@EZSteve Месяц назад
Hi Gary, Yep, Schwalbe Marathon PLUS tires are absolutely unbeatable based on my experience on my trips ... never have had a single flat with one so far! To do a comparison of faired versus non-faired, I'd have to do a speed trial without the fairing, and then duplicate it with the fairing. For me, I don't have a desire to spend my time doing that, so I'll just be content with the thought that windscreens make a difference. How much really doesn't matter to me because I'm not one of those techno-junkies online who love to discuss this sort of thing, haha. The best advantage that I can see being useful to me is winter riding because the fairing will keep the cold frigid air off my hands and fingers ... a VERY worthwhile thing! steve

Is that seat back adjustable to lean back more if desired? You have a new concept now...Balance and concentration on the possibilities of wet or sandy slippery surfaces. Very possible hazards. Be very very careful. I see you upgraded and got your house repainted. Nice
@EZSteve
@EZSteve Месяц назад
Yes, the seat back can be tilted much farther to the rear, for a much greater recline angle. Also, the seat itself can be adjusted fore and aft, which is how to adjust for leg to pedal distance (as opposed to changing boom length on a trike). Regarding the seat back angle, with the panniers and trunk attached, that is about as far back as I can go without the seat back struts interfering with the pannier attachment points. I could perhaps eek out another half inch or so, but the angle where it currently sits is very comfortable, which is different than my analysis on recumbent trikes, where I have always preferred more recline angle. So far during my life, I have not yet slipped on sandy or wet surfaces while riding bikes. Of course, there may someday be a first time, haha. steve

Yes, the X-Seam range according to the company is 36" to 45". My X-Seam falls within that range. This LWB recumbent bike is 5 inches shorter overall than the Easy Racers Gold Rush that I used to own. For me, it's perfect, but if I really wanted to recline the seat back more, I would run into issues with the panniers fitting on the rear rack due to the seat struts that begin to overlap the rack as the seat is reclined more and more. When I had the seat all the way rearward at first, my feet were too far from the pedals, so I moved it forward a bit. Sun Bicycles was started in 1971 by a family, based in Miami, Florida, so they've been around 53 years. From what I can see on my bike, I am impressed with the quality and design. In 2014, Sun split into two divisions, the second (Sunseeker) being the one that handles the recumbent line-up. This bike I have was introduced in 2004, designed by Gardner Martin, the same man who designed the Easy Racers Gold Rush back in the latter 1970s to set bike speed records. He designed this bike I have now as a LWB that is easier for most people to ride than the more radical Gold Rush. He succeeded. It is easier to adapt to than the Gold Rush. steve

Yes sure does spoil a good ride! Only had this happen once to me in the uk and I was on a DF. When I’m on the trike thankfully no problems yet. Unfortunately in the uk there is a small minority of people who think any type of cycle should not be allowed on the roads and become especially enraged when cyclists - who don’t pay road tax - ride sociably side by side etc. The motorists I encountered on that day stopped alongside me and, in between swearing profusely, told me in no uncertain terms I should not on the roads. He also said there were “special” roads “for people like me”. I am not tough skinned and it does spoil your day…

I am like you, in that I am very sensitive emotionally when people are not nice or respectful. I'm not the type who can just brush it off immediately and not let it bother me. Time takes care of it of course, but for me, and probably you too, it requires more time. I cannot imagine what drives people to treat others with such hatred, out of the blue! On Wikipedia, under the title of "Bicycle Safety", I found this commentary: "Road rage: Some vehicle drivers may try to 'punish' cyclists for what they perceive as selfish behaviour in 'holding them up unnecessarily' and so when overtaking them will pass them too closely or cut in too sharply or sound their horn at them." Yep, that pretty much sums it up! Happily, these unpleasant people are in a small minority! By far, most drivers I've encountered during my 15 years of cycling (both cross country and locally) are super courteous and very nice, some even stopping to ask if I need any assistance when stopped at the side of the road for an energy bar snack!! Yep, I"m too old to ride a bicycle! Do you know of anyone who might like to buy it? So far, there are zero miles on it, a 2024 in "factory perfect" condition. I chose recumbent over traditional bike because of all the reasons you mention. Recumbent bikes are just as comfortable as recumbent trikes, and I too would not prefer a regular bicycle. Catrikes are great trikes ... I loved my Catrike 700!!! Oh, and by the way, I don't carry any health insurance, but I do wear a full coverage BELL MIPS helmet instead of a typical helmet that only covers the top of a head. I think I may have been having a senior moment when I ordered this young person's recumbent cycle, haha. steve

@SFCRambo60, I agree with all that you said. I also loved Steve's recumbent trikes. For all the reasons he has previously mentioned over the years in his videos and articles. Stability, extra width and more easily seen by traffic on the roads riding a recumbent trike. Traffic also interprets recumbent trike riders as being handicapped so they are extra careful when approaching trikes in their automobiles (most of them are, the responsible drivers anyway) which means safer situations. Laid back and able to see more around you while riding, due to not having to worry about balance, ever. And the list goes on. WHO CARES if people think riding a recumbent trike is for either old or handicapped people. I'm neither, and I could care less what others think of me when I'm enjoying my recumbent trike. If Steve is truly happy with this new recumbent bicycle, then I'm glad for him, but I remember how much he used to talk up about recumbent trikes. I was quite shocked when he was selling his HP VELOTECHNIK SCORPION trike for a recumbent bicycle. Balance is the key factor and Trikes are just plain FUNNER! haha.

I looked into the Bacchetta Bella, but did not find any availability options at the time. I found my former Easy Racers Gold Rush steering not to my liking, too twitchy for me, so this time around, I chose a LWB recumbent bike that was also designed by Gardner Martin (same man who mad the Gold Rush for record speed trials), but his intent was to make a version of his earlier design that was more user friendly in the steering department. This bike is 40 pounds, so yes, heavier than my Gold Rush was. steve

@@KutWrite Do you find the steering on the Bella twitchy or what some would see as too fast and hard to control? Did it take some time to get used to it, or did you fall right into it easily based on your Gold Rush experience? I have thought about SWB bikes, but there are many factors that seem not so ideal in my mind when compared to LWB. steve
@KutWrite
@KutWrite Месяц назад
@@EZSteve I didn't see it as twitchy. I came from the Giro SWB, though, which was a bit twitchy and interfered with my heels if I wasn't careful. For me, the Gold Rush wasn't so much twitchy as "floppy." The turning axis of the front wheel was offset from its point of contact with the ground, so the front wanted to "flop" in the direction I started to turn the handlebars. That may have felt "twitchy" to you. The SWB is by nature shorter in length, so a slight turn of the bars meant an instant reaction from the bike. This was fine in town, but going over about 10mph it took some getting used to. My trike is similar, so it may replace my Bella on the training stand for indoor use. The Bella strikes me as a nice leisurely cruiser, on pavement only, of course. The frame is stiffer than the Gold Rush, which is good for transferring pedaling force but gives a slightly bumpier ride. Not much, though. Hope that helps!
@EZSteve
@EZSteve Месяц назад
@@KutWrite YES, floppy is an apropos word to describe the Gold Rush steering, actually better than twitchy. In my writing and talks, I have described how the Gold Rush front wheel kind of falls over to the side when turned, which I believe is due to the way the forks are curved forward at the bottom. On mine, when turning in tight areas, I found that I had to actually muscle the handlebars back into the straight forward position, which I did not find to my liking. This EZ Sport has more traditional style forks, without such a drastic curve near the bottom as the Gold Rush, so the wheel does not feel like it is falling to the side, or floppy. I tried a SWB recumbent once about ten years ago. It had under-seat steering, which felt very nice and natural, but wow, talk about a learning curve, and just being able to start pedaling and riding if not used to it, haha. Practice makes perfect on a bike like that! This EZ Sport frame is pretty stiff, heavier of course than the Gold Rush aluminum frame. steve
