As the PaleoHikerMD channel has grown, my ideas about it have changed. In the end our channel is about a lifestyle. Being outdoors as much as we can whether it be hiking, backpacking, canoeing, etc...traveling as a family...finding geocaches along the way...all along home schooling our kids in an effort to make life and history come alive instead of just being on the pages of a textbook. Want gear reviews?...well we do those too! Self-Reliance is also big in our family, and on our channel you will find plenty of content detailing survival, bushcraft, and preparedness. Lastly, but certainly not least, we will bring you along on our continued journey into the Paleo Lifestyle. Your health is not what you inherit, it is what you make of it with effort and real change!

Next do a review of the Fire Maple Polaris Pressure Regulated upright canister stove! I would be awesome to see how it compares to a Soto Windmaster or MSR PR Deluxe 👍🏻
I love the content.. I would just like to see some of the reviews done in real backpack camping situations.. I do a lot of overnight hiking and would like to know if the systems are practical in that application in the desert
Nah that’s stand (if it fits that diameter burner) would definitely work better constructed circular… What I did learn is that this oval setup works perfectly with a kidney based canteen cup🏆 Love the work, thank you 🙏🏼 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Got mine in 87-88 winter. Went to Yellowstone to spend 23 days in the snow in the cold 27 below weather. never failed. Used it to glaze the snow cave inside and boil water and doing anything we needed it to I still got the same stove today I bought a repair kit and I found a deal on a new one and bought it about 5 or 6 years ago and still haven't had to open it. If you want to bet your life on a stove that's what you need to use.
This is an Emberlit knock off. Found the folding stoves....think Firebox Freestyle 4 inch is much better. In my area wood pellets are $8. for a 40lb. bag. Drizzle a little hand sanitizer on the pellets and your good to go. 40 lbs goes a long way. Also own the Nano but the Freestyle is much more functional. Thanks PH.
Was it the pot stand that was the problem? I have the same burner and used a stand that had plenty of air with the proper 1.25" gap and got a rolling boil at 7min 40 seconds using about half the fuel.
Yep, I bought this to put in my day pack. I lit it at home to check it. Well, it is junk. I think the jet holes are to large and poorly located. I live in Thailand and Aliexpress price here is just over $3. YES I WASTED $3😮
Think of the custom dents as character marks. Maybe the wind screen can be used with a better burner. Designers can say what they want but there is no substitute for field testing.
bought the original Msr pocket rocket when it first came out and I am still using it now. I don't want any other gas stove at the costs they charge . This stove is the bees knees.
👎👎👎 Until shown otherwise, I'm giving this one a definite thumbs down. Supported by other comments and under correction, I concur that you appear to have got the windscreen assembly wrong .. inside-out! The Burner .. possibly not the best? I have made plenty of my own .. some that look much like that one you demonstrated. Yes, I added Ceramic / Glass Wool or Carbon Cloth to the construction (I have done so with all of my home-grown burners) and they work just fine. You are 100% correct in that Alcohol Burners need sufficient Oxygen to function properly .. although the same would refer to anything that generates a flame. Ernie, you have a healthy subscriber base with many thereof who take your word as gospel. In my opinion, posts as this possibly do a disservice to the supplier .. and in no way enhance your reputation for fair, unbiased assessment. I am more than prepared to stand corrected .. but until then ..
I had someone give me one of these a few months ago. After playing with it for a bit, I inserted some felt into it and it improved quite a bit. I can boil 2 cups of water in about 4-5 minutes with it now. Also, your stand is assembled inside out. The tabs go on the inside and you'll have to curl it into a Heart Shape to get the 2nd tab to insert. The stand works great with my Trangia knock-off. Depending on the wind, sometimes I flip the stand over and get better results.
Just thinking out of the box. If you clip the dovetails the other way around, so that they interlock on the inside, you might get a full circle, which would increase airflow.
I bought one & came with a titanium pot stand/ windscreen & I didn’t really like the burner but use the stand/ windscreen for other diy alky & solid fuel with great results ( when you assemble it correctly “round with dovetails going in” like everyone here suggest! Sometimes you “are wrong” but I subscribed & watch all of your videos & learn sometimes lol 😢😂
These are definitely impressive runtimes but the light similar to the coast headlamp I have now seems to be pretty cold which gets you more distance and brightness but I'm looking now for headlamp with a slightly warmer light and like 3,500K range. Any ideas?
Hi, Hopefully you will try it again allowing the burner to breath. Then its blameworthy if it proves usless. I bought 2 similar but one a smaller diameter. Not tryed them yet. Mine did not come with Windshield/potstands. Thank you for sharing.
the pot stand is assembled incorrectly ....remove one side and scroll it in the opposite direction so it flexes in a circle rather than lay flat it will get more oxygen ...... just an observation
3:24 - You are mounting the windshield "wrong", if assemble in circle will allow more air reach the flame. This stove is somewhat popular - due their low cost; with "alcohol stoves addicts" from Japan, so they made some modifications trying improve. - Put steel wool inside - can use carbon felt. - Put aluminum tape over the holes and make small ones. -Or tape the internal jet holes and make new outside, near the upper part. In some tests the stove literally "explode" when lit.
I have a lot of stove, like you purchased and made, and have my fair share of lemons. 🍋 Like sports teams, sometimes they make the playoffs other times the basement, but ether way you enjoy the game 😊
The windscreen is sold separately as well, for example as 3 pieces. That configuration combined with a puck-style burner works a bit better due to the better airflow though it does require a larger pot.
I’m not a big fan of alcohol stoves, I have a couple trangia stoves that are “OK”. Cheap products usually produce cheap products. I don’t hike nor am I in survival mode. There’s better stoves out there.
Thanks for your review, Ernie. Even the flop stoves are cool and interesting to look at! It a great learning experience to try different ones and knowing how they look and if they will perform. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next one!
Ernie, I have this stove with the stand. Yes, it is a big piece of crap, yes I spilled alcohol with it a few times. However, the stove was a freebie, because I was interested in the stand only. The way you put the stand together is wrong. Put them claps together the other way so that it makes the complete circular ring. It's not a bad stand but it does seem to collapse under its own heat when using a better stove.
Yes, in the way he assemble the windshield block some aeration holes, what is puzzle because at begging of the video he was talking about lack or oxygen for the stove. 🤔
Wow so badly! I'd be looking to modify starting with picking up two stones to place between the guard and can to increase air flow. If the can would hold up when hot! lol lol Ya it's that bad. It might make a better candle holder though. Or cut out the inners and pack it with fire starter materials.
I think the major problem with this stove is the jet holes are way too big. They look like their 1/16" in diameter holes and should be 1/64" or 1/32" I was impressed at how quickly the fuel in the center was sucked up into the outside ring so they must have put something in the stove to absorb the fuel. the pot holder was obviously an after thought and you would need a rock or something on each side of the stove to allow it to breathe better.... but....with the holes so big the stove will not burn right.... no pressure will be generated no matter how hot it gets.... my penny stove works far better ! this stove may well be made so it can run off gasoline... that would be an interesting test ! but i doubt it.... alcohol is far more volatile than gasoline and even that did not develop any pressure.... the only cure I can come up with for that stove is plug all the holes and re drill new holes with a tiny drill.... not one or 2 sizes smaller but a real tiny drill and then test it... it probably would not heat very good so you'd need to drill the holes out a little bigger.... the thing is, it may not supposed to generate pressure at all... but without it you'll get really poor boil times ! I've seen wick stoves do better on your videos ...so yah that stove is junk ! ..... thanks for the review !
Hi Ernie! I’m fairly new to your channel, Steve from firebox stove sent me your way, I came across a trangia modification where steel wool and fire resistant cotton/ possibly, carbon fiber felt was used, was wondering your opinion / thoughts about alcohol stove modifications. It was on the, BikeNCamp, channel. Can you help me out with this? I really need a pros opinion. Thank you so much for sharing. Really enjoying your channel and content. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤️❤️❤️
When put inside the Trangia (or any alcohol stove) some wick material, e.g. carbon felt, ceramic wool, even steel wool - this material don't burn; and a mesh of steel above, you are: - The heat of the steel wire improve the the alcohol vaporization a bit improving the bloom (start) time and make the stove more eficiente, fuel last longer. BTW- Trangia already have a wick internally, a tube made off Line cloth around the inner wall. Can see this wick in exploded stove view in Trangia page. - The flame became more blue, what suggest better air fuel mixture. - If used Carbon felt, Ceramic wool, fiberglass wool... this material absorb the alcohol will minimize spread alcohol and fire if the stove tips over. Watch this Chinese video - has English subtitles; from YT channel Lifestyle CC Land, is one of the best about this modification. 【原創藍火設計】為何眾多手作職人追求終極藍火? 好處這麼多!! Trangia藍火風暴值得你瞭解!!
