Stunning fascinating footage. Hysterical inane comments. I just love the contrast. These blokes are recording excellent film. But they haven't the thought or vocabulary to do it justice. "holy crap" "holy crap". It isn't that they're not David Attenborough, they aren't even my 3 year old.

This is brilliant footage and it really shows why so many Japanese people were caught off guard… the crazy currents and the directions of the waves.. the people were watching for a wave coming in straight, but instead it came from sideways around the headland. Seeing the way these waves change direction when it’s just a small amount, compared to the 40 ft monsters the Japanese faced is quite amazing. This is probably the best footage and vantage point I’ve seen to date.

Maybe my favorite California tsunami video of all time. The regression and then ascension of this wave is super impressive, and far more so than we can normally see on an exposed area of coastline like this one. Fantastic stuff!

Even though the tsunami here was much smaller compared to what hit Japan, the chaotic sound of the ocean was a bit scary.

Always be aware of what caused the tsunami, like how big was the quake, if its a landslide from land or under the ocean you may want to run for your lives, in 1950s a tsunami wave cleared the tree line at around 524m, yes 524m......... Geologists and hydrologists had to re-evaluate how high waves could get when this happened. If its an asteroid impact also run for your lives...

I was in Japan during this time. It was quite a bit different there, but I grew up in CEC area. I have seen storm surges push logs up over that stretch of road. If those waves had been higher or had hit during high tide, this video would be very different. The cow pasture behind you is fairly flat, and the rise in the road to your left is a little bit away. Going toward the airport would have been futile or deadly. But, truth be told, that is probably where I would have gone too or the harbor...

I've watched many videos of this tsunami in Japan; so glad this is all you had to put up with. I'd like to think you (all) have an escape route in place abd coordinated wuth your community so no one gets trapped on the road due to congestion... like close all roads coming and open all for leaving.

Some good video but I wish people would learn to video with a little less speed. You waver back and forth that makes a person dizzy trying to see something. Take a few seconds at each level. My daughter and her husband were living in Crescent City at this time. They were working so could not get down to the beach to watch.

Crescent City was hit REALLY hard by huge waves from the 1964 Good Friday earthquake in Alaska, which registered 9.2. There are haunting reminders of that in many parts of town. One of the central areas was a sort of mall, not very big, and all the buildings were painted kind of a turquoise color, with a white band painted around each post, that was the level the water reached from the waves. Most of the lines were 6' or higher in that area. 12 people were killed. The warnings were tested, if I remember correctly, once a month and the sounds of that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Reminded you of just how strong all that water could get.

My wrong, however we did get a big quake here in Alaska in 2011, thought it was the same one. Similar topic though the great 1964 quake in Alaska, second largest ever recorded killed not only Alaskans from the huge tsunami but people in Oregon, Hawaii anc crescent city California were killed by the tsunami! Talk about a long distance! By the way that quake registered 9.2 and lasted approx “4 minutes”, imagine that!

This occurs from a 7 plus quake here in Alaska. I was in the coastal fishing town of Petersburg, locals all got in their vehicles and headed to higher ground, we got no wave though.

Pyrus Rex yup! The Japanese had no idea what was coming at them. They have ... once again posted markers on hillsides.. to show how far up a Huge Tsunami can reach... but .. after a while the people will forget... yet again.

And yet the Sentinelese, isolated on a tiny island in the Andaman sea for sixty thousand years, who have not yet discovered fire, metallurgy, or agriculture, knew when the fault let loose in 2004 to run for the high part of the island, because the sea was coming. India sent a survey helicopter to see if any survived, and it was promptly greeted by a healthy hail of arrows from shore.
@melodiefrances3898
@melodiefrances3898 Год назад
@@faithrada that's not exactly how it played out ... The reason so many got caught was because the coastline dropped about 3 feet, which hadn't been factored into the equation, combined with the sheer magnitude of a 9.1 earthquake, which, while it was known it could be possible, was definitely the extreme edge of what people were expecting. Imagine enduring a 6 minute 9.1 quake and then having 10-20 minutes to get to higher ground. Japan is more prepared for earthquakes and tsunamis than any other country.

I'm surprised that there wasn't any "bad apples" who ventured into the water with a surf board or jet ski! Great video Alisha, videos like such are a great resource for preparing for future tsunami's and storm surges, it's vital for individuals to take note if along the coast line.
