I realize that was only an 8 foot surge, but the thought of standing right there raises the hair on the back of my neck, knowing the other side of that wave killed thousands in Japan.
@faithrada

Pyrus Rex yup! The Japanese had no idea what was coming at them. They have ... once again posted markers on hillsides.. to show how far up a Huge Tsunami can reach... but .. after a while the people will forget... yet again.

And yet the Sentinelese, isolated on a tiny island in the Andaman sea for sixty thousand years, who have not yet discovered fire, metallurgy, or agriculture, knew when the fault let loose in 2004 to run for the high part of the island, because the sea was coming. India sent a survey helicopter to see if any survived, and it was promptly greeted by a healthy hail of arrows from shore.

@@faithrada that's not exactly how it played out ... The reason so many got caught was because the coastline dropped about 3 feet, which hadn't been factored into the equation, combined with the sheer magnitude of a 9.1 earthquake, which, while it was known it could be possible, was definitely the extreme edge of what people were expecting. Imagine enduring a 6 minute 9.1 quake and then having 10-20 minutes to get to higher ground. Japan is more prepared for earthquakes and tsunamis than any other country.

Maybe my favorite California tsunami video of all time. The regression and then ascension of this wave is super impressive, and far more so than we can normally see on an exposed area of coastline like this one. Fantastic stuff!

People always know that they are in absolutely NO danger right up until the point when they get nailed. No one EVER sees it coming. Having said that, adults can make their own decisions & we, the spectators, can entertain ourselves by talking tons of smack. Nice video. Questionable decision-making.

As scanning to the right the road goes along the water about 3ft higher. The water didn't go across the road. The initial warning was over and lots of people were out to check the damage. The cliff was Round 20 ft , so not so crazy as it looks.

Great video, but seriously, this was a very dangerous place to be, and they weren't alone (4:13) there were a few people there. Imagine if that water kept coming a little more, you all would be a memory right now. People drown in that water all the time when there isn't a tsunami surge. Glad everyone is safe.

I'm surprised that there wasn't any "bad apples" who ventured into the water with a surf board or jet ski! Great video Alisha, videos like such are a great resource for preparing for future tsunami's and storm surges, it's vital for individuals to take note if along the coast line.

This is brilliant footage and it really shows why so many Japanese people were caught off guard… the crazy currents and the directions of the waves.. the people were watching for a wave coming in straight, but instead it came from sideways around the headland. Seeing the way these waves change direction when it’s just a small amount, compared to the 40 ft monsters the Japanese faced is quite amazing. This is probably the best footage and vantage point I’ve seen to date.

What makes this more amazing, it traveled thru the night from Japan. It damaged Depoe Bay, and Brookings Harbor in Oregon. Crescent City Harbor, and Santa Cruz Harbor in California. If anyone thinks this was a non-event, type those locations into the search boxes. You'll see some of these harbors were protected from storms, but this tsunami surge is a different animal, just keeps moving with its own turbulence & power!

I don't mean to make light of the disaster in Japan or the damage in Hawaii or California but its mind boggling how the effects of an earthquake halfway around the world can be so far reaching.

Thanks for posting your video. It's helpful to see the mechanics of the tsunami--it's far more complex than a single "wave" coming in [surfers take note!]. Today we've seen that these surges can ebb and flow a number of times. The rocks that are "taller than I am" are a great reference.

There is pretty much always more than one surge. And generally the first one is NOT the worst. Often the 2nd wave is the worst, but it can also be later ones. Moral : wait until it's really over.

That's what I call "confused seas". The waves did not know which way to go, and that sound, kinda like the sound a tornado makes: you don't mistake it for anything else. If you want to see foolish people, watch all the toursits in Sumatra going out to look at how far out the see had gone: if I see that, I don't just go the other way, I RUN.

There was a landslide in the Italian Alps in 1963 into a dammed up reservoir.. The earth had moved slowly for years and then failed - a huge piece of granite two kilometers long. The engineers were all up on the dam to "watch the 25meter" lake tsunami that the engineers had predicted. Only it was 200 meters and washed over the dam and destroyed the town below killing thousands including the miscalculating engineers watching on the dam. But like you say, it must have been "quite an adventure."

I was in Japan during this time. It was quite a bit different there, but I grew up in CEC area. I have seen storm surges push logs up over that stretch of road. If those waves had been higher or had hit during high tide, this video would be very different. The cow pasture behind you is fairly flat, and the rise in the road to your left is a little bit away. Going toward the airport would have been futile or deadly. But, truth be told, that is probably where I would have gone too or the harbor...

Japan was 17 hours ahead of the U.S. West Coast on that date, so when the earthquake hit off the coast of Japan on the 11th at 2:46 p.m., it was 9:46 p.m. on March 10th in California. The tsunami waves reached Northern California on March 11th at 8:44 a.m., 11 hours after the earthquake.

There were a lot of lucky people on the Crescent City shoreline that day, through no merit of their own. These people are standing WAY too close to the water in a tsunami generated from a magnitude 9 quake in Japan and reaching the beach of a town that has often suffered tsunami damage and death, including the 1964 Good Friday Quake in Prince William Sound.

@2004armywifey I know the area, it's maybe 10 feet down to the water at high tide there. But before the waves hit, nobody knew how big they would be. They could have been anywhere from 4 feet to 15 feet. So considering most places evacuated were at a higher elevation than this, these people weren't too smart to stand here. They're just lucky that the highest waves ended up being around 8 feet.
@dreddykrugernew
@dreddykrugernew 3 года назад
Always be aware of what caused the tsunami, like how big was the quake, if its a landslide from land or under the ocean you may want to run for your lives, in 1950s a tsunami wave cleared the tree line at around 524m, yes 524m......... Geologists and hydrologists had to re-evaluate how high waves could get when this happened. If its an asteroid impact also run for your lives...

@srhbca The problem is that 12' wouldn't be enough if you were in Japan. 100ft wouldn't be enough. So the worry was that the waves generated by this earthquake would still contain enough energy behind them to wash out the bluff. Fortunately the energy was greatly dispersed as it travelled through the ocean. Just wait for the Juan De Fuca to slide, it's a Megathrust 9.0+ magnitude producing fault along the Oregon coastline.

The actual earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan did not occur until around 4 PM (approx) Japan time, friday afternoon, 3-11-11. I recall watching it LIVE around 10 pm or so, California time, that night. If the wave in this video happened *earlier in the day* on that friday (3-11-11) as you say, then it can't be a tsunami from the Japan quake, can it? That's all I'm saying. I like the vid tho', regardless. :)

I don't think that the cameraman was an idiot... If he wanted to go see the predicted-8-ft-wave, knew the risks, and chose to go where he knew he had a decent (15ft by approximation from the waterline) height to video from, then let him do it and just watch in awe at his video. Like pp said, we all clicked on the link to see the footage. Where was he supposed to take it from: inland? a cliff? would you have watched if he had?

Similar topic though the great 1964 quake in Alaska, second largest ever recorded killed not only Alaskans from the huge tsunami but people in Oregon, Hawaii anc crescent city California were killed by the tsunami! Talk about a long distance! By the way that quake registered 9.2 and lasted approx “4 minutes”, imagine that!
