Both of them look like they are loaded. The Barker is really riding low. I can’t see her anchor openings. Nice catch. Great video of them both. 😊 well now further down I do see her anchor openings lol
Famous! People will be taking videos of you two! I've mentioned before that when the Barker and Mesabi Miner were mothballed over by the Drummond Island dolomite docks that my dad and I had cruised in the fishing-boat the whole length of the Barker from about 10 feet away. That wall of steel went on forever.
lol, we have been recognized three times now... weird! :) The closest I've been was at Engineers day, when I was between the locks, and the American Century(I think? Maybe Indiana Harbor) pulled in. Once they were up at Lake Superior level I could not believe how tall they were!
September in the Soo. The Leitch was brand new (just a year or 2 old,) when I lived in the Soo. Depending on the wind direction, the days quickly jump back and forth between hot and cold, tending ever colder. It must be nice having a house to put up antennas at. I'm in a first floor apt on an alley, and 20 feet from heavy power-lines. Fortunately there's a park 2 blocks away, and a 30 minute drive takes me up to 9,100 feet on the side of the mountain.
This autumn has been abnormally warm, which is making all of the locals nervous that we will pay for it in January. The downside of the warm weather is it has pushed the fall colors back quite a bit, almost three weeks later than normal now. I don't have a very big lot but I am trying to make the best of it, lol. I have an antenna for the AIS station, antenna for the Broadcastify feed, another antenna for marine traffic to receive satellite NAV info. 11' vhf/uhf vertical and now a 40-6 Off center fed dipole. Technically, I do still have my 40m EFHW up but not using it and will likely pull it down before winter hits.
I have seen somewhere where the mid section of the ship was expanded. Port and starboard in the cargo bay to raise the capacity of the ship, which made it too wide for the smaller lock.
We were able to see Octantis in person at dusk when we were staying in Port Huron. Seeing her on camera is one thing; seeing her in person is another 😊 (I took a video & many pictures of her.) She's magnificent!!! 4:11, Argo, your face tells me, "Dad, it's awkward sitting on this rock!" lol
I'm glad you were able to see her in person because the Viking ships really are very striking. To think it really is a floating city, going down the river, just blows my mind! That rock is a bit awkward for him to sit on. I really should talk to the park people about making it more level for him :)
It looks like it would be a nice spot to camp. When I was coming back from this hike, there was a pontoon boat pulled up to the site and they were setting up camp. I was a tad jealous :)
Gorgeous ship. There are tours of the ship on line & of course the vloggers recording their voyages. Lots to experience & learn. Definitely not your party ship like most of the cruise lines. And yeah, you're paying for it. 🛳 💲💲💲
I've seen some vlogs from the ship and it really does look like an amazing experience. Maybe if this whole RU-vid thing takes off I can go on a cruise.. but I doubt I could bring Argo so.. hmmm.
2 subs, John and Paul. Polaris has George and Ringo. Subs are not allowed to dive in US waters. Diving at Tobermory with crystal clear water and all the wrecks would be spectacular
Great view of Miss Bling #1 ✨! The panomax cams on the Viking ships are awesome, watch them when they go to South America and especially Antarctica. You can see icebergs galore! Thanks for posting!
I often forget to check the cameras until they are coming through town. I need to set a reminder to check them out this winter, while they are down in Antarctica.
Love the Gott! Always have enjpyed her, but after she went to the aid of the Michipicoten in distress, totally respect her & her crew, like the Arthur M Anderson. Their integrity is stellar. Interesting facts about her (boom, horsepower). Also about the ballast water on salties. Just love this working knowledge. Thanks for the voice over, you guys must have really had some gusts.
I have to say, the Gott is my favorite footer and that opinion only increased after they went to the aid of the Michipicoten. Really have to admire that!
Sorry. You have to get both ships in one video frame for it to count as a double. :) The red and white flag on the Tundra has a logo in the upper left corner of the white area by the pole, and is the flag of Malta. Malta is a 'flag of convenience' for large freighters from around the world due to tax advantages offered by Malta.
When hiking alone be sure to carry an HT as well as your cellphone, and have the local repeaters programmed into it in advance. Finding them when you have a broken ankle or are bleeding is a bit awkward. The drunks figure their beer cans will melt down to a slag that is inconsequential in the fire-pit. They're wrong. I've always cleaned up my campsite or picnic site so it looked much better than when I arrived. I was taught that from the time I was 3 or 4 years old and I'm in my 70's now. Every campsite, always. I think I left just one without cleaning it up better than when I arrived. I left during a downpour. I still feel bad about it. The trees grow dense enough to kill off whatever is beneath them. Note that the lower limbs of the trees are without foliage. I think they also affect the ground pH enough to kill off plants that would steal nutrients and water from their roots. MI was entirely logged off during the 1800s. At the start of American pioneers migration west in the 1800s it was quite depressing because they were always beneath a canopy of trees as far as the Mississippi river, never any sunshine. The lumberjacks and a growing east coast construction boom, furniture manufacturing, and woodstoves took care of that.
I do always carry an HT along with a rollup j pole and a short length of coax. I don't believe I tried it on this hike but on nearly all of my hikes I do pull out the HT to see if I can hit one or more of the repeaters. I also try to check into the nightly nets when I'm out camping. Throughout my hikes I've been able to get into at least one repeater pretty much everywhere between St Ignace and Paradise with my hefty 5 watts :). I was taught the same thing, that people should not be able to tell that you were ever there. I've come across a lot of garbage on my hikes, the weirdest are the dirty diapers. I have been amazed the places I have found dirty diapers! They hauled that crap in(literally) but they can't haul it out... so frustrating! Coming from Oregon where there are pine forests for many many miles(although less every year with the increased wildfires), I forget that most of the east coast was logged out. I'm guessing that means most of the trees we have here today, could be 2nd generation.. or more. Wow, what a thought!
Just remember Cody, if sea gulls fly over the bay, then technically they become bay gulls...lol Thanks for all your hard work...I greatly appreciate it!!!
