Argo and I rushed down to Rotary Park to catch the Algoma Bear and Paul R Tregurtha. As a bonus, we received salutes from them both! We also saw the fire truck get on the ferry, a first for me.

Fantastic video👍🏻 Wow, the sky! 1:23 That was neat to see PRT "peek a boo" from behind Algoma Bear 😊 And as always, beautiful pictures of you, Argo!

Glad you enjoyed it Hannah! I thought it was funny how the PRT could hide behind, well, anything.

Nice shot, Cody. You know the way to get them is to work at it. The PRT ALWAYS has a very professional aura about her. Her long, straight, no nonsense lines, and her powerful horn and utter immensity all add to it. The Bear seemed to be in a hurry. Also her hull is awfully scraped up for a brand new ship. Must have difficult unloading, (the scrapes are high up on the hull,) docks to work.

Until I started to really pay attention, I never knew there could be so much variety in the horns(whistles). From the crazy loud dual tone James R Barker, to the bass heavy John G Munson and the loud and raspy Paul R Tregurtha. I know they get scraped up going through the locks on the Welland Canal as well but yes, I was surprised to see her so beat up already.

Very nice Cody & Argo, you got lucky with the Bear Salute

I've been noticing more salutes from the Algoma ships lately. A few have saluted in the lock as well.

AMAZING that as big as they are, and as mechanical as they are, these freighters are this quiet (from the outside) when they glide past you.

The Algoma Bear seems to be extra quiet. I have always been impressed that something so large can barely make any noise.

Day after engineers day there was an ambulance on its way to the ferry as it was on the other side of the river. They ended up kicking the few cars they loaded on off and bolted across the river to get the ambulance and bolt back across. The ferry captain waisted no time. How different they react to ambulance crossings vs regular car crossings.

Wow, I’ve never had any issues with crossing on the ferry ⛴️ before

I hadn't considered that the ferry is the only way for emergency services to reach the island. Not until I saw the fire truck pull up to the ferry then it all clicked into place.

The Bear is already a little rough looking.

Every 5 years Great Lakes freighters have a mandatory Coast Guard inspection and it is usually done during winter layup and that is when they usually give them a new paint job
@codyandargo906
@codyandargo906 16 дней назад
The paint has a rough time going through the Welland Canal due to how they secure the ships while being raised/lowered.

I thought the Joseph L. Block [Nope, I'm misremembering the name it's the Mark W. Barker] was the newest freighter (remember seeing her in the Bay Ship shipyard as she was being finished). Just learned by your video that the Algoma Bear is newer, which makes me happy that the Great Lakes fleet are being updated with new hulls. I was very happy to see the Paul R. Tregurtha when she came through the Duluth Ship Canal the second week of August (my first time). Thanks for this video!

The Algoma Bear made the long trip across the Pacific Ocean to start working on the great lakes just a few months ago. Before that, the Mark W Barker was the newest ship, launching in July of 2022.
