No free will until we got prefrontal cortex brain evolutionary patch just like the other evolutionary brain patches accross eras. Remember kids, this still gave u no reason to commit genocide or doing any short-sighted interest and just like Mr. Sapolsky stated about impulsivity and developmental pysche, we're not the same monkey nor tribalistic meganthrope anymore and thats privilege in itself. Train, look and think ahead !!! :D

The will is determined. To define a free will as free of determinism is absurd because then it wouldnt be a will anymore. It would be chance. Our will is free because nobody but ourselfs can stop us from making a decision. And there is no machine and no god out there that could predict which decision we will make. The title should better be "Life without that absurd definition of Free Will".

Not standing on the same ground, or looking at the same aspects of a holistic holographic parallel coexistence assessment in which it's legitimate to discuss a spectrum of behaviors. We're each unique in uniqueness. Which is why I would definitely defend Robert Sapolsky's reasoning for holding his POV in the context he delineates. Personally I respect the fact based on Euler's e-Pi-i laminated Quantum-fields that the behaviors in compounded complexs of superhetrodyne wave-packaging interference positioning-location that are holography dimensionality coordination are not a dictate of free will, you can be as wrong as you like and still use this Disproof Methodology as legitimate Philosophy of recognising uncertainty in WYSIWYG QM-TIME Completeness Holographic self-defining via Singularity-point Entanglement Fusion-Fission Function Lensing, ie Logarithmic Time Duration Timing modulation mechanism. Bio-logically, the Absolute Zero-infinity reference-framing containment positioning Aether is a self-defining unknown unknown unless and until you know Conception of Singularity-point positioning Completeness, and that is Eternity-now Interval, here-now-forever re-evolution everywhere-when differentiates. Necessarily a "word salad" for parallel POV and different Nomenclature.., so you get what you pay for, Professor Sapolsky's introductory course to ONE-INFINITY certainly help everyone.

Ok ok so after you gather all these info. I don't understand why you can't use freewill to change some stuff. Like pay attention to how you raise your children, eat nutritious food during pregnancy etc.

Free will is the freedom to choose, the fact that you don’t have an infinite amount of choices doesn’t negate the freedom of choosing within itself. That’s a senseless way of thinking… You are simply creating a infinite paradox and or walls/existence that isn’t even there in the first place…

This idea is, indeed, so liberating. I felt some physical lightness when I accepted it, thought it through. I realize that it may be a “bummer” for a lot of humans out there, and they sure have their reasons. But for me personally this idea IS helpful, and uplifting. Despite I went through depression, it doesn’t make me sad, rather the opposite. Just calm, even a bit happier. Thank you, Prof. Sapolsky

Not only is this thesis completely contrary to lived-experience (wherein we do recognize that WE ARE the source of our action), its further implications are incredibly dangerous. Reducing man to a lump sum of experiences and external factors completely destroys any purpose in life and prevents the possibility for existing at all. It is this deterministic anthropology that led to the horrors of the 20th century, and which continues to convince people that they don’t have any control over their lives whatsoever, further increasing their manipulability and weakness. I don’t deny we are a result of external factors, but I say only in the sense that they provide us the material to work with. If I live in Mississippi, I will either go to this school or that school. My available choices are determined, but not the choice itself. I’m sure most of us came up with an idea similar to this when we were 14; but we rightly no longer believe it, because we came up with it when we were 14.

I agree that our own free will is likely a delusion. It is determined by biology and environment. His assumptions on how to address this going forward are absolutely wild though. We dont even need the experiments, as society has already done them. I felt like I was listening to some college freshman ramble on about how great communism would be. Obviously, I could be completely wrong here, but I like to see his math on this.

To think that, since there is no free will, which I tend to agree with, everything has to be determined is very short sighted and wrong. There might be many ways the future could be undetermined without our free will to determine it. You are committing a logical fallacy. Human arrogance I suppose, as always, if we are not the determining factor, nobody is.

“…Loss of free will and the world becomes a much more kind place.” 😂 that’s a good one. Then he doesn’t even answer his own example of keeping people safe from criminals and meritocracy losing value. 😂 he literally gives just a vague an answer as he does justifying radical pre-determinism. Then he didn’t really answer teaching his kids about determinism. The interviewer’s answer to how he taught his kids was, “right…” 😂 here is an a example you can ponder, someone tortures you and your family and when given the opportunity to protect yourself and even stop further violence, you don’t stop them or let them go because “it wasn’t their fault because that person can’t help themselves so let’s just understand them and tell them them it’s not your fault and go back to torturing my family again.” Or you stop the threat and then say “hey everyone, it wasn’t his fault and since none of us have any free will we will respond the ways we will and let’s go get some food…”

The Quran says that there is no freewill. That's my understanding, we have no power over, life, death, wealth, even the acts of kindness. Allah is one and Allah has 99 names. With each of the names the greatest form is Allah, and we have no part of Allah and no credit for what Allah has done. If we are Muslim at birth, which is defined as slaves to the will of Allah. Instincts to suckle, and everything positive and death and life belong to Allah, and claiming I did this is Shirk. InshaAllah, if Allah wills it. To say I will do this, without saying InshaAllah is Shirk, the highest level sin. With every single thought and statement you deny the existence of freewill but also make the effort to do the best actions. But you are promised hell for taking credit, because that's only from Allah, mashaAllah. Before the action, and after the action. Positive action and negative action. Then you are making the choice to bow to Allah. You have completed self jihad, and you have no freewill. The Angels have no free will, it says this directly. Then it says humanity is being tested for their actions and Allah knows the future and the past. 100% of everything you will ever do is known by Allah before you exist. Allah is just letting you play out your experience then judging the deviants, but there is no deviants ever. It argues the impossibility of free will from multiple points.

The same way as we do now, albeit not for the same "justice and retribution" which is an illusion by itself given no free will, but for purely utilitarian purpose. The fact that the criminals' actions are driven by their genetics and circumstances, do not at all discount their dangerousness.

In a world that is turning more and more selfish, we need this philosophy, we should all realise we have no control over our own life, but we are even more powerful then that, we are the environment of everybody else we meet, we should take up the responsibility of influencing people in the right direction through understanding and helping. Great video, thank you
