Can extreme political polarization in the U.S. be overcome? Join Professor James Fishkin in examining three recent national "America in One Room" experiments that show what happens when people have the opportunity to talk through their differences in a civil manner. Prof. James Fishkin is the Janet M. Peck Professor of International Communication, a senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and a professor, by courtesy, of political science. He is best known for developing Deliberative Polling® - a practice of public consultation that employs random samples of the citizenry to explore how opinions would change if they were more informed. His work on deliberative democracy has stimulated more than 100 Deliberative Polls in 28 countries and conducted on every inhabited continent. Most recently, he is the author of Democracy When the People Are Thinking (Oxford University Press).
