Great video. There are some good equine studies - but like humans, horses sweat all over - unlike dogs. Most top performance horses if competing in an event for several days will be on an IV drip with vitamins, electrolytes etc after hard exercise, particularly if they will be working hard the next day. Having studied vet med, this is probably something I will do if I get to your level. Vets in mainland Europe are cheap, and an IV would only cost a few Euros and take maybe 20 minutes - it’s something to bear in mind.
This is one of the most valuable videos I’ve seen. Thank you for taking the time and putting this out. Can’t wait to try my Malinois on this Schutzhund technique. Wish there was a club by me!
Thank you for such a detailed presentation on training dogs. I'm now old, and every dog that ended up being "my dog" has been left to me by family members who couldn't handle the dogs any more. (Well, 30-40 years ago, as a teen, I did get to pick a Norwegian Elkhound to run the ridges of NC with me.) My pit mix passed last week, and I've always had an eye for the Belgian Malinois. I'll study a bit before making any big decision, but your videos help me greatly. Thanks.
When you are demonstrating the Transport with the first puppy it sounds like you are saying "Mark" to cue the dog looking before the release. The next puppy clip shows you saying "Transport" before movement and release. Are you using 2 different commands? One for a stationary watch cue and then the "Transport" command layered in when adding motion?
Thank you for the way you explained Shutzhund, I would love to do that sport (though my true love would be French Ring lol but no one does that here and Schutzund is close enough). I have a 2 yr old rescue GSD/BM who has made amazing progress in obedience in the past 6months since I got her when she knew nothing, not even housebroken. She was in rescue for 6mos and the rescue owners felt she had been harshly dealt with as a pup where she only went to dog parks for exercise. So, that said, she is a shy dog and I can’t tell how much of that is genetic or learned behavior though it’s probably a combo. I believed I needed a very secure dog to do Shutzhund but as I listened to your explanation, what I am hearing is that it is a sport designed to bring out the best in your dog (may be regardless of behaviors like shyness?) That by doing the sport it elevates the communication, obedience and bond between dog and owner. Am I right in thinking that learning these skills could boost her confidence and improve her behaviors? Right now she growls and barks at anyone who comes in my house. I have to keep her on leash by my side at all times even when my daughter was here for a week! Since I’ve never had this behavior before in all my years with dogs I don’t really understand it but I’m willing to work to improve it and would love to participate in the sport even at its lowest level.
Question. Can you train a dog to track AND do scent work? Scent work requires the dog to raise its head to scent the air..can a dog learn both or is it too confusing. I ask because scent work competitions are so readily available while Shutzhund is not but I am loving this tracking skill.
I got as far as your comments on speed of tracking and subscribed! 99% sure my rescue GSD is part Malinois and speed and focus in tracking down her ball is the way she thinks. I’ve been dying to see French Ring, Mondio or Shutzhund for beginners on RU-vid since it’s not offered in the dog club or privately in our area. I look forward to watching and learning.
please make more videos! I love them. We want to do Schutzhund training with our two dogs. We think it would be so much fun. I hope the dogs like it too. I would also love some videos about puppy training etc. ❤
