The greatest chin ever. The heart of a lion. If he had any kind of reflexes, he would have been one of the greats. Also, he is a very smart and witty guy.
Cooney never learnt to hold. He’d stand there with his hand up to the top of his head waiting for the guy to stop. No side movement. Defensively very poor. He should have destroyed Spinks…but was probably surrounded by yes men.
Retarded Cooney was a disgrace and embarrassment, no right hand, no defense, no footwork and no head movement, one big punching bag and overrated retard!
Cooney is all rust. He establishes a nice jab. Then abandons it. And he doesn't let his hands go. He just doesn't let them go. He stands there and gets hit. Punches in bunches. Let both hands go. Follow the combo with the big left. Don't stand there and get hit and telegraph. Let the hands go. Double and triple up the jab. 1-2-3-3. 1-1-2-1-2-3-3 etc.
Cooney had the size and power to be a legitimate H/W contender, what puzzles me most is why didn’t his trainer trained him to use his right more effectively! His jab and devastating hook were all left and very seldomly we saw him firing his right, perhaps blocking punches once in a while. I saw him at a New York suburb diner years ago. He was chatting with some guys in a friendly way, soft spoken and courteous 👍🏻
Iti is pure enjoyment to see physical skills it takes to participate in " The Sweet Science" unlike that " mishmash " mma that is currently " the rage " amongst those who find bouts of sanctioned " barroom brawling " as entertainment.
